1. Which band was formed in New York by two pairs of sisters and released "Leader of the Pack" in 1964?

Answer: The Shangri-Las

Sisters Mary and Elizabeth "Betty" Weiss paired up with identical twins Marguerite "Marge" and Mary Ann Ganser to form a band they named The Shangri-Las. They took the name from the name of a local Oriental restaurant. When they signed with Red Bird Records their parents had to sign the contract because none of the girls had reached their 18th birthdays. They had success from the start when their first release, "Remember (Walking in the Sand)", reached Number Five in the US. They followed with the Number One "Leader of the Pack". The success of the song established the girls as a solid act and they appeared with such artists as The Beatles, The Drifters and James Brown.
Mary Ann Ganser died from a seizure in 1970. Her sister Marge was only 48 when she passed away due to cancer, in 1996. Mary Weiss eventually began a career as a furniture consultant in New York and Betty worked in the cosmetics business.

"Chapel of Love" was written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich with The Ronettes in mind. The three girls had been singing since they were in grade school and called themselves Little Miss and the Muffets. In 1963 they joined forces with manager Joe Jones and changed their name. He arranged a deal with Red Bird Records and their premier single, "Chapel of Love" became their biggest selling song. After a few more hits the girls switched to ABC-Paramount but failed to continue their run of chart hits. Joan Johnson became a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses and left the music business.
"Dancing in the Street" was done by Martha and The Vandellas in 1964. "Do I Love You?" was a single by The Ronettes that made it to Number 34 and "You Should Have Seen the Way He Looked at Me" was a single by The Dixie Cups that only reached Number 39.

Anita soon joined them and they began getting work as backing vocalists for such talent as Grace Slick, Elvin Bishop and Boz Skaggs. They were signed to Atlantic Records in 1971 when Ruth joined the group and they became a quartet. Their eponymous debut album came out in 1973. Bonnie and June left the group in 1977 and Ruth and Anita forged on as a duo until they signed with Elektra and urged June to rejoin them. They began having hits with "I'm So Excited", "Jump (for My Love)" and "Neutron Dance" from the "Beverly Hills Cop" (1984) soundtrack.
