Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I had a UK number one hit single with "Evergreen"

Answer: Will Young

Will Young won the 2002 British singing talent show, "Pop Idol". His first single was the Westlife track, "Evergreen" which peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart. The popular singer from Wokingham, Berkshire, made this a hat trick by following with two more singles which also reached the top spot, "Light My Fire" and a cover of The Beatles classic, "The Long and Winding Road". All of these three singles can be found on his debut album "From Now On" which was certified Platinum in the UK.
2. I was the youngest member of One Direction

Answer: Harry Styles

With floppy hair falling over his forehead, Harry Styles appealed to the younger audience with his cute appearance and good looks. Born in Redditch, Worcestershire on 1st February 1994, Harry was part of the boyband One Direction, along with Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson. Together they came third in the 2010 series of 'The X Factor', just ahead of Cher Lloyd, but losing out to Rebecca Ferguson and the eventual winner, Matt Cardle. One Direction caused a new British invasion of America, becoming the first band to have their first four albums successively reach number one in the history of U.S. Billboard 200.

Their most popular songs have included "Live While We're Young" and "Best Song Ever".
3. My first single was called "Those Were the Days"

Answer: Mary Hopkin

The Welsh folk singer, Mary Hopkin, has had a successful career that has spanned over 40 years in the music industry. Her career kicked off in the late 1960s after she won the talent show "Opportunity Knocks", followed by becoming one of the first artists to sign up to The Beatles record label, Apple. Produced by Paul McCartney, her first single to be released was "Those Were the Days", reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1968. Sandie Shaw also released her version of the song in the same year but it was nowhere near as successful. The song was originally sung by Russian gypsies, calling it "Dorogo' Dlinnoyu" which roughly translates as "By the long road". American musician, Eugene Raskin, added the English lyrics which included:

"Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And think of all the great things we would do

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la..."
4. I was part of a group who won Popstars: The Rivals

Answer: Kimberley Walsh

Kimberley Walsh, along with Nadine Coyle, Cheryl Tweedy, Sarah Harding and Nicola Roberts, were members of the girl group, Girls Aloud. They won the talent show "Popstars: The Rivals" in 2002, with their debut single "Sound of the Underground" reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart. Over the next ten years, they also peaked the UK charts with "I'll Stand By You", "Walk This Way", and "The Promise". Since the band split in 2013, the ladies have all had successful careers to different degrees.

In 2012, Kimberley Walsh appeared in the tenth series of "Strictly Come Dancing", and also made her London West End stage debut in the same year, playing Princess Fiona in "Shrek the Musical".
5. I was the first winner of "Britain's Got Talent"

Answer: Paul Potts

"Britain's Got Talent" first aired on television in 2007 and the winner was classical crossover singer, Paul Potts. Born in Gloucestershire, the unassuming shop manager took the judges and audience by storm with his rendition of Puccini's "Nessun dorma".

After winning the competition, his first album "One Chance" achieved success at number one in the UK Albums Chart. It included the songs "Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro)", "Music of the Night" and "Nella Fantasia". British actor, singer and presenter James Corden starred as Potts in the 2013 movie, "One Chance".
6. My first album was called "Spirit"

Answer: Leona Lewis

The London born singer trained at the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology and went on to have a successful musical career after winning the third series of "X Factor" in 2006. Her debut album "Spirit" was released in 2007 and featured her hit singles, "Bleeding Love" and "Better in Time", the former reaching number one in various countries including Australia, Germany, UK and USA.

She sang the theme tune for the blockbuster film "Avatar" called "I See You" and she appeared in the 2014 musical romance film, "Walking on Sunshine". Outside of music, she is a keen activist for animal welfare.
7. I was born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie

Answer: Lulu

The diminutive singer Lulu is just over five feet tall but she has a powerful voice which can reach far into the back of any stadium. Born in Scotland in 1948, Lulu lived in a two-room tenement with her three siblings, mother and father. She started singing from a very early age, signing up to Decca Records when she was just 15 years old and releasing her popular single "Shout" a year later.

Her international breakthrough came when she won the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest with her song ""Boom Bang-a-Bang".

Other popular songs she is known for include "To Sir With Love", the James Bond theme song "The Man With the Golden Gun", and she also featured in the Take That number one UK Single, "Relight My Fire". In 2000 she was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II for her services to the British entertainment industry.
8. I often sat "Under the Moon of Love" wearing my Teddy Boy outfit

Answer: Showaddywaddy

Showaddywaddy were a group of eight men, known for their signature style of 1950s Teddy Boy outfits and singing rock 'n roll songs from that same era. The band formed in 1973 out of two other bands, Choise and Golden Hammers, resulting in an unprecedented arrangement of having two vocalists, two bassists, two drummers and two guitarists.

Their initial lineup included vocalist Dave Bartram, drummer Romeo Challenger and bass guitarist Rod Deas. They entered the talent show "New Faces" where they became runners-up in the 1973 final.

Their most popular song of the 1970s was "Under the Moon of Love", a cover version of the 1961 song written by Tommy Boyce and Curtis Lee. Although the initial lineup of the band has changed over the years, they still tour the UK to packed audiences.
9. I walked on sunshine and it felt really good!

Answer: Katrina and the Waves

Katrina Leskanich, Kimberley Rew, Alex Cooper and Vince de la Cruz were the four members of Katrina and the Waves when they formed in 1981. The Cambridge based band had an early success with their upbeat "Walking on Sunshine", written by band member Rew which reached number eight in the UK Singles Chart. Rew also wrote the popular soft-rock song "Love Shine a Light" which was their winning entry in the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest, beating other contestants in a landslide victory.

The song peaked at number three in the UK Singles Chart.
10. I won the Eurovision Song Contest

Answer: Brotherhood of Man

With a cheesy dance routine and cute song lyrics, Brotherhood of Man became the winning British entry in the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest. The two girl/two boy band were likened to the Swedish group Abba who won the same contest two years earlier with their pop anthem, "Waterloo". Band members Martin Lee, Nicky Stevens, Lee Sheriden and Sandra Stevens bopped away on stage in The Hague, Netherlands; Abba-esque style red and white jumpsuits worn by the ladies, and smart suits with red carnation buttonholes worn by the men. They never managed to achieve the same success afterwards and their entries into the UK Singles Chart dwindled after their UK number one in 1978 with "Figaro". They still make the occasional television and club appearance but can be proud that their winning song "Save Your Kisses for Me" was voted in 2006 as the top fifth Eurovision entry of all time. The lyrics included:

"Though it hurts to go away, it's impossible to stay
But there's one thing I must say before I go:
I love you, (l love you) you know.
I'll be thinking of you in 'most everything I do.

Now the time is moving' on, and I really should be gone
But you keep me hangin' on for one more smile.
I love you, (l love you) all the while.
With your cute little wave will you promise that you'll save your

Kisses for me, save all your kisses for me
Bye bye, baby bye bye.
Don't cry honey, don't cry.
Gonna walk out the door, but I'll soon be back for more
Kisses for me, save all your kisses for me.
So long honey, so long.
Hang on baby hang on.
Won't you save them for me...even though you're only three."
