quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sadly, the wonderful singer Dusty Springfield died in 1999. What song of hers was featured in the movie "Pulp Fiction"?

Answer: Son of a Preacher Man

Dusty was well-respected in her milieu and she did the original version of "I Only Want To Be With You".
2. True or false: Gerry Marsden's older brother, Freddie, was the original drummer in Gerry and the Pacemakers.

Answer: True

Since the 60's Gerry and the Pacemakers have continued to perform and tour, without any of the original Pacemakers (except Gerry, of course). The "Pacemakers" seem to be get younger and younger!
3. It is pretty well-known that Eric Clapton began in The Yardbirds, but as the lead guitarist. Who was the original lead vocalist?

Answer: Keith Relf

Sadly, Keith was electrocuted on his microphone while rehearsing at home. It is believed that his 4-year-old son found him.
4. Sandie Shaw was well-known for appearing on stage without...

Answer: shoes

One of my favorite girl singers of the time, she WAS very near-sighted, but apparently was more uncomfortable in foot gear! She was (is) also quite tall, so that may be a clue to her preference for bare feet.
5. Who was the drummer in the Dave Clark Five?

Answer: Dave Clark

The only member I left out of the multiple choice line-up is Dennis Payton. Dave Clark went on to become an Entertainment Promoter and Rick Huxley, an Electrical Wholesaler.
6. What was the name of the first incarnation of the band that eventually became The Who?

Answer: The Detours

This was prior to Keith Moon joining. Source: The British Invasion web site @ http://www.lights.com.
7. The Searchers were another great group from Liverpool. What American singer/songwriter wrote their hit "When You Walk in the Room"?

Answer: Jackie DeShannon

Marianne Faithfull recorded Jackie DeShannon's "Come and Stay With Me" on her first album. Sonny Bono and Jack Nitzsche wrote the Searchers hit "Needles and Pins".
8. What British girl singer sang the theme song to, and appeared in the film, "To Sir With Love"?

Answer: Lulu

Lulu can be seen on "Absolutely Fabulous" as one of Edina's (many) disgruntled clients. Actress Judy Geeson, Sidney Poitier, and a young Micheal des Barres were also in that great film.
9. In the well-known Hollies song "Bus Stop", what does the singer say to the girl he's just met?

Answer: "Please share my umbrella"

"Bus stop, wet day, she's there, I say, Please share my umbrella." Graham Nash went on to Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young).
10. Who were the two "Ronnies" in The (Small) Faces?

Answer: Ronnie Wood and Ronnie Lane

Ron Wood is now a Rolling Stone. The other last names I used were all members of The Small Faces or The Faces, as they became known eventually: Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane, Ian Mclagen and Rod Stewart. Rumor has it that they became "The Faces" when Rod Stewart joined because he was taller than 5'6" and "small" didn't seem to apply anymore.
11. Michelangelo Antonioni's first English-speaking film was 1966's "Blow Up", starring David Hemmings as a passive photographer. Who "played" the band in the music club scene?

Answer: The Yardbirds

Interestingly, Antonioni had originally asked The Kinks to be in his film, but they apparently wanted nothing to do with it.
12. A little more difficult movie question involving 60's music: What former member of The Animals wrote the songs and music for the soundtrack to Lindsay Anderson's so-called follow up film to "IF!", "O Lucky Man?"

Answer: Alan Price

A bizarre and wonderful film starring Malcolm McDowell and the great Helen Mirren among others. And a marvelous soundtrack. Price also appeared in the film with his band as a band-on-the-road who picked up a hitchhiking Malcolm McDowell.
13. What songwriting team wrote Marianne Faithfull's first hit record, "As Tears Go By"?

Answer: Jagger and Richards

Along with Lulu, Marianne can also be seen in "Absolutely Fabulous" in which she plays . . . God!
14. What dance was invented from a song by Freddie and the Dreamers?

Answer: The Freddie

It was due not only to the song "Do the Freddie", but from the way Freddie moved on stage. It was pretty silly but very easy to dance.
15. Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders had a huge hit with "The Game Of Love". According to the song, where did "The Game of Love" start "long ago"?

Answer: the Garden of Eden

"It started long ago in the Garden of Eden, when Adam said to Eve 'Baby, you're for me!' So come on baby let's start tonight, come on baby let's play The Game of Love..."
