Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which British Invasion band had a hit song which included the lyrics: "I was born in a cross-fire hurricane/And I howled at my ma in the driving rain"?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones were hated by parents as a bunch of outcasts more influenced by rhythm and blues than pop music. They released "Jumpin' Jack Flash" in September, 1968. It was a top three hit everywhere in the world. The Stones usually use it as the opening number at their concerts.
2. Which British Invasion group was responsible for the lyrics: "I'm her eighth old man, I'm Henry/Henry the eighth I am"?

Answer: Herman's Hermits

Herman's Hermits were not a showy band (a bit like watching Buddy Holly and the Crickets) but they had several hit records. They released "Henry VIII, I Am" in 1965. Among their other hits were "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" (1965) and "I'm Into Something Good" (1964).
3. "You say that you love me, all of the time/You say that you need me, you'll always be mine". Those are lyrics from a song by which British Invasion band?

Answer: The Dave Clark Five

The Dave Clark Five had a hit with "Glad All Over". It was a number one hit in the UK in 1963 and reached number six on the US "Billboard Hot 100" in 1964. They were one of the first British rock bands to make a name for themselves in America.
4. Among the first to adopt the concept album, which British Invasion band was responsible for the lyrics: "Cause he's oh, so good, and he's oh, so fine/And he's oh, so healthy, in his body and his mind"?

Answer: The Kinks

"A Well Respected Man" was released by the Kinks in October, 1965. It reached number thirteen on the US "Billboard Hot 100". The Kinks' lyrics often indicated a different view of the world than other bands. Some of their lyrics were reminiscent of folk music of the day. Among their concept albums was "The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society".
5. Which album-oriented band had these lyrics in a song: "Beauty I'd always missed with these eyes before/Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore"?

Answer: The Moody Blues

The song is "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues. If the Kinks were the troubadours of the British Invasion the Moody Blues were the symphony orchestra. In fact, they sometimes partnered with symphony orchestras, in addition to the five band members playing up to twenty-five different instruments in the production of their albums which, as the years progressed, were composed of tightly woven, interdependent songs. Perhaps more popular in Canada than the US, they are a popular band and still active.
6. Sort of stowing away as part of the British Invasion, what group had a song with these lyrics: "I'm telling you now, I'm telling you right away/I'll be staying for many a day, I'm in love with you now"?

Answer: Freddie and the Dreamers

"I'm Telling You Now" was a "Billboard Hot 100" number one song for Freddie and the Dreamers, though they had more success in the UK. They also invented a dance called the Freddie, named after the group's leader, Freddie Garrity. You rarely saw anyone other than the band members performing it; it didn't have the staying-power of, say, the Swim or the Hitchhike.
7. It took one British Invasion group a while to get a top-ten hit in the US. Who sang these lyrics: "Blood is rushing, temperature is rising, sweating from my brow/Like a snake her body fascinates me, I can't look away now"?

Answer: The Hollies

The Hollies had a top-ten hit in the US with "Stop Stop Stop". While most of the British Invasion groups were wound down by the 1970s, The Hollies got their highest ranking hit on the "Billboard Hot 100" with "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" in 1972. It reached number two . They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
8. Perhaps not the best lyricists but hit-bound with these lyrics: "Before I knew it she was walkin' next to me, singin' 'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'/Holdin' my hand just as natural as can be, singin' 'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'." Who were they?

Answer: Manfred Mann

The correct answer is Manfred Mann. Named after their keyboard player, they achieved some success in America, being another band that was more popular in the UK. They regrouped in the 1970s as Manfred Mann's Earth Band and had a big hit with "Blinded by the Light".
9. Can you remember the name of the band that produced these lyrics: "Comes a-walkin' down my street, then she comes up to my house/She knock upon my door and then she comes to my room"?

Answer: Them

The song "Gloria" has become so synonymous with Van Morrison that we often forget the song came out while he was lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them. Them also had hits with "Here Comes the Night" and "Mystic Eyes". Morrison was with the band for about two years before striking out on his own.
10. Which British Invasion band was responsible for the lyrics: "I want to tell her that I love her a lot but I gotta get a bellyful of wine/Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl, someday I'm gonna make her mine, all mine"?

Answer: The Beatles

It was the Beatles! "Her Majesty" was included on the "Abbey Road" album in 1969. It was to be part of a medley but Paul McCartney decided he didn't like how it sounded and directed that it be removed. One of the recording engineers decided to add it to the end of the album.

The original releases of the album in the US and UK did not list the song in the credits, making it a 'hidden' track. Although "Abbey Road" was the last album recorded by the Beatles, it was decided to release "Let It Be" (already recorded) as the final Beatles album. So "Her Majesty" was actually placed as the last song on the last album recorded by the Beatles.
