Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This folk singer tried to "Catch the Wind" but he saw too many "Colours".

Answer: Donovan Leitch

Donovan always claimed that "Mellow Yellow" was not about smoking banana peels.
In 1967, after studying with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Donovan renounced all drug use.
2. This group sounded like they were from Motown, and struck gold in the U.S. and the U.K. with "Baby, Now That I've Found You" in 1967.

Answer: The Foundations

This short-lived group boasted a singer from Trinidad, 2 members from
Jamaica & 1 from Ceylon. Their follow-up hit "Build Me Up Buttercup" was co-written by Mike D'Abo of Manfred Mann.
3. Some of this group's first hits were written by a future founder of "10CC." They spawned three rock guitar legends and turned the world "Over, Under, Sideways, Down".

Answer: The Yardbirds

"The Most Blueswailing Yardbirds", as they first were known, were at
the forefront of the emerging 'hard-rock' sound. Their live shows,
known as "Rave Ups", were some of the most electrifying experiences to
be found in swingin' England in the mid 60's. (In case anyone doesnt' know, this group was the breeding ground for Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page.)
4. "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", this group could really "'See See' Rider" "When I Was Young."

Answer: The Animals

Alan Price quit first. He and Eric Burdon argued constantly, going way back to when Alan claimed a songwriting credit for "House of the Rising Sun". Chas Chandler, the group's bass player, became Jimi Hendrix's manager.
5. A young Steve Winwood founded this group that had everyone "Feelin' Alright."

Answer: Traffic

Dave Mason and Steve Winwood could not agree on a direction, so Dave
split and had a very successful solo career. He 'rejoined' a couple of times.
Check out their first LP "Mr. Fantasy" for a real look at the emerging
talent of Mr. Winwood --- and listen to it on vinyl --- it is worth it!
6. Formed in 1967 in London, this group's keyboardist went on to form "Emerson, Lake and Palmer" in 1970.

Answer: The Nice

Although they never had any real hits, The Nice was known for their
live shows. Keith Emerson's antics on the keyboards included burning
a U.S. flag during the song "America" (from "West Side Story"). This
stunt got them banned from the Royal Albert Hall.
Greg Lake was in King Crimson and met Emerson in America while both
were on tour.
7. I will be in "Bits and Pieces" if you can't guess the name of this group that made us feel "Glad All Over".

Answer: The Dave Clark Five

This was the second British Invasion Group to play on Ed Sullivan.
Dave Clark and Mike Smith had a very nasty break-up, each vowing
never to play again with the other. Mike went on to record some
vocals with The Alan Parsons Project and was heard on several jingles
in the U.K.
8. "Listen People", "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat", this group had a "Dandy" of a lead singer that was often found "Leaning On A Lampost".

Answer: Herman's Hermits

Peter Noone was the lead singer for this Manchester group that sold
over 17 million records in the early 60's. He returned briefly to
an acting career, hosted a British T.V. show, and even had some minor
hits in France & Belgium in the mid-70's.
9. This Liverpool group taught us how to do the "Hippy, Hippy, Shake" until fans quit buying their records virtually saying, "You're No Good".

Answer: The Swingin' Blue Jeans

Singer/guitarist Terry Sylvester was a key player in this group and eventually would replace Graham Nash in the Hollies. Their version of "You're No Good" far surpasses the one released by Linda Ronstadt. (In my humble opinion.)
10. "How Do You Do It?", well it is easy if you "Ferry Cross The Mersey" with this Liverpool group managed by Brian Epstein.

Answer: Gerry and The Pacemakers

Even though they were produced by George Martin and played The Cavern
in Liverpool this infectious group couldn't match the success of
you know who. Gerry Marsden scored a few minor hits as a solo artist, returned to acting for a while, and still gets a nice fat royalty check each year for "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying".
