Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whose blues band has featured guitarists like Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor and Jack Bruce?

Answer: John Mayall

Eric joined from the 'too commercial' Yardbirds and went on to rule the guitar world, Peter Green left with John McVie to form Fleetwood Mac and Jack Bruce later formed Cream with Eric and Ginger.
2. Who had the first British Number 1 with "Unchained Melody"?

Answer: Jimmy Young

Frighteningly, Liberace took it to No. 20 in 1955, the same year as Jimmy Young took it to No. 1. The Righteous Brothers didn't get it to No 1 until 1990 (their 1965 release only got to No. 14). Leo struggled to No. 54 in 1986. Jimmy Young went on to become a long-serving BBC Disc Jockey.
3. What 70's British band featured the dual vocal talents of Robert Palmer and Elkie Brooks?

Answer: Vinegar Joe

Salt-N-Pepa didn't come along till the 80's. Brown Sauce only had one hit in 1981 for Noel Edmunds. The Peppers were French & had an instrumental hit in 1974. Vinegar Joe never made it into the singles charts but had a brilliant reputation as a live band - hardly surprising with the line-up.
4. Which Beatles single spent longest in the UK charts?

Answer: She Loves You

"She Loves You" was there for 36 weeks, re-entering the charts in 1964 & 1983 after originally charting in 1963. "Please Please Me" managed 22 weeks split between 1963 & 1983. "Help" hit 17 weeks in 1965 & 1976. "Get Back" got 23 weeks in 1969, re-entering in 1976 & 1989.
5. In which band did Van Morrison first find Top 10 chart success?

Answer: Them

He played with The Javelins and The Monarchs in Belfast in the late 50's/early 60's. He formed Them in late 1963, charting at No 10 with "Baby Please Don't Go" in 1965. He never sang with Caravan.
6. What was the name of Joe Cocker's backing band?

Answer: The Grease Band

Joe played drums & harmonica for the Cavaliers when he was 15. Delta Lady was an early hit. Mad Dogs And Englishmen was his 3rd album. The Grease Band also had a 'solo' album - ie without Cocker.
7. How many UK Top Ten hits did Billy Idol have?

Answer: 3

"White Wedding" got to No 6 in 1985, "Rebel Yell" also got to No 6 in 1985 and "Mony Mony" got to No 7 in 1987 (The old Tommy James & Shondells hit). "Rebel Yell" didn't quite make it first time round, only reaching No. 62 in 1984.
8. What was The Who's first UK Top 10 hit?

Answer: I Can't Explain

"I Can't Explain" charted in 1965, reaching No 8. "My Generation" reached No 2 later the same year, "Pictures Of Lily" got to No 4 in 1967 and "Happy Jack" was No 3 in 1966.
9. Under what name did Paul McCartney's brother have hits as a member of Scaffold?

Answer: Mike McGear

Roger McGough was also a member of Scaffold, and wrote some of the script for the Beatles film "Yellow Submarine". Scaffold had the Christmas No. 1 in 1968 with "Lily The Pink".
10. "Do You Love Me" was used in the soundtrack of Dirty Dancing, but who had the original UK No. 1?

Answer: Brian Poole & The Tremeloes

Brian Poole's version charted in September 1963 and went to No. 1. Dave Clark followed in October the same year but only got to No. 30. The other two, I'm afraid, were red herrings!
