Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song was #159 on the countdown? "Please release me, let me go, For I don't love you anymore. To waste our lives would be a sin. Release me and let me love again."

Answer: Release Me

One of ten children, Arnold George Dorsey was born in India, but did most of his growing up in England. He adopted the stage name of Engelbert Humperdinck (from the German composer of the same name) because he felt that it was one that people would remember. "Release Me" was his first big hit, reaching the number one spot on both sides of the Atlantic.
"World Without Love", by Peter and Gordon, was #217 on the countdown, "Alone Again (Naturally)", by Gilbert O'Sullivan, was #383, and "Domino", by Van Morrison, was #444.
2. What song was #400 on the countdown? "Don't know much about history. Don't know much biology. Don't know much about science books. Don't know much about the French I took. But I do know that I love you, And I know that if you loved me too..."

Answer: Wonderful World

Although covered by a few different bands, it is the Herman's Hermits' version of "Wonderful World" that made the countdown. The group was fronted by Peter Noone, an actor who had been previously known for his appearances on "Coronation Street". This was one of their six North American, top ten hits.
Also by Herman's Hermits, "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" was #161 on the countdown, "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat" was #199, and "I'm Henry VIII I Am" was #280.
3. What song was #12 on the countdown? "Oh please, say to me, You'll let me be your man. And please, say to me, You'll let me hold your hand."

Answer: I Want to Hold Your Hand

This was the Beatles first big American success, hitting number one in February of 1964. (It is interesting to note that it hit number one in Australia in January of the same year.) They performed it during their first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show", where it was estimated that approximately 73 million viewers were tuned in to watch.
Also by The Beatles, "Eight Days a Week" was #215 on the countdown, "Ticket to Ride" was #278, and "Day Tripper" was #386.
4. What song was #105 on the countdown? "You say that you love me (Say you love me), All of the time (All of the time). You say that you need me (Say you need me), You'll always be mine (Always be mine)."

Answer: Glad All Over

The Dave Clark Five have the distinction of being the band to have made the most appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show". Perhaps more impressively, "Glad All OVer" was the song that pushed the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" out of the number one spot in the charts (British Charts).
Also by the Dave Clark Five, "Because" was #144 on the countdown, "Bits and Pieces" was #209, and "Over and Over" was #299.
5. What song was #249 on the countdown? "Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane. I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain, Oh and, I can see Daniel waving goodbye. God it looks like Daniel, Must be the clouds in my eyes."

Answer: Daniel

With his flamboyant style and amazing music, Elton John has managed the incredible feat of charting a top forty single every year for 27 consecutive years (from 1970 - 1996 inclusive). Co-written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, "Daniel" is about a Vietnam vet.

It is from the album "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player", which is the first in a string of seven consecutive albums that hit the number one spot.
6. What song was #222 on the countdown? "Wild thing, You make my heart sing, You make everything groovy. Come on, wild thing. Wild thing, I think you move me, But I gotta know for sure. Come on and hold me tight, You move me."

Answer: Wild Thing

"Wild Thing" was written by Chip Taylor, who is the brother of actor Jon Voight (and, by extension, uncle of Angelina Jolie). Although banned by many stations because its lyrics were thought to be too suggestive, the song became a number one hit in the US. Recorded by the Troggs in 10 minutes, it became their biggest hit ever, and was adopted as almost an anthem by many young people.
7. What song was #100 on the countdown? "I was born in a cross-fire hurricane, And I howled at my ma in the driving rain. But it's all right now, in fact, it's a gas! But it's all right."

Answer: Jumpin' Jack Flash

Written by Jagger and Richards, "Jumpin' Jack Flash" was a number one hit in the US in 1968, the year that both Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated.
In 1986 Penny Marshall made a movie by the same name, which featured a funny scene where Whoopi Goldberg kept replaying the song while trying to figure out the lyrics.
Also by the Rolling Stones, "Brown Sugar" was #43 on the countdown, "Honky Tonk Women" was #323, and "It's All Over Now" was #429.
8. What song was #253 on the countdown? "What's your name? (What's your name?) Who's your daddy? (Who's your daddy?) (He rich?) Is he rich like me? Has he taken (Has he taken), Any time (Any time to show), To show you what you need to live? Tell it to me slowly."

Answer: Time of the Season

The Zombies were the second group of the 'British Invasion' to score a number one hit on American charts, with their song "She's Not There". "Time of the Season" was unique in that it became a huge hit a year after The Zombies had already split up. All attempts to get the band to reform, because of the success of the song, failed.
"House of the Rising Sun", by the Animals, was #10 on the countdown, "MacArthur Park", by Richard Harris, was #72, and "Nights in White Satin", by the Moody Blues, was #281.
9. What song was #339 on the countdown? "I'm just mad about Saffron, Saffron's mad about me. I'm just mad about Saffron. She's just mad about me. They call me mellow yellow (Quite rightly)."

Answer: Mellow Yellow

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Donovan Leitch is respected as much for his poetry as he is for his music. His sometimes quirky, sometimes whimsical music was generally filled with political commentary, giving voice to the anti-establishment feelings of the times. Written by Donovan, "Mellow Yellow" was a huge hit that was later, disappointingly, used in a butter commercial.
10. What song was #95 on the countdown? "Those schoolgirl days, Of telling tales and biting nails are gone. But in my mind, I know they will still live on and on. But how do you thank someone, Who has taken you from crayons to perfume? It isn't easy, but I'll try."

Answer: To Sir With Love

Written by Mark London and Don Black for the movie of the same name (starring Sidney Poitier), "To Sir With Love" is one of those perennials that gets dusted off before summer vacation every year. The daughter of a Glasgow butcher, Lulu began singing professionally at the age of 14. She not only sang the theme song, but also acted in the film.
"Imagine", by John Lennon, was #62 on the countdown, "Downtown", by Petula Clark, was #420, and "Brown Eyed Girl", by Van Morrison, was #18.
