Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A set of twin brothers, Charles and Craig Reid, well loved by their "ain folk" in Scotland, also have a good international reputation. Who are they?

Answer: The Proclaimers

Charlie and Craig Reid are the Proclaimers, famous for such songs as "Letter from America", "Sunshine on Leith", "I'm On My Way", and the stirring feet stamping anthem "Five Hundred Miles".
2. Jim and William Reid are the founder members and mainstay of which Scottish band?

Answer: The Jesus and Mary Chain

Jim and William Reid are founder members of The Jesus and Mary Chain. They hail from East Kilbride in Scotland and so do Aztec Camera. East Kilbride also happens to be my home town. Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream is an ex member of the JMC.
3. Brothers in arms Mark and David Knopfler of Dire Straits; they don't sound Scottish, but they were born on the Scottish side of the border. Do you know where?

Answer: Glasgow

Yes the Knopfler brothers do in fact "Belong To Glesga, Dear Auld Glesga Toon" to quote the words of Will Fyffe. Their mother was English, a teacher, and their father was a Hungarian Jewish immigrant, an architect who had fled from Nazi Europe. Mark was born on the twelve of August 1949 and David on the 27th of December 1952.

The family moved to Newcastle when Mark was around nine and they were raised on Tyneside. They went on to form the band Dire Straits.
4. AC/DC are a very successful heavy metal band from Australia. Two of its founder members are brothers, and it's not a big secret that they were born in Glasgow. The lead guitarist is one of the brothers, and on stage he wears his trade mark schoolboy outfit. What is his name?

Answer: Angus Young

The Young Brothers, Malcolm and Angus, were born in Glasgow and raised in the Cranhill district of the city. The family emigrated to Sydney, Australia, in 1963 taking advantage of the Australian Government's £10 immigration scheme of the time. They have an older brother George who gained fame with The Easybeats, who had some success in the UK and bigger success in Australia in the late sixties.

Lemmy is the front man with Motorhead though his surname isn't Young.
5. Alex Harvey was a leading figure in Scottish rock music, best known for his time with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. He had a brother Leslie who was the lead guitarist with another band; can you name that band?

Answer: Stone The Crows

Alex Harvey introduced his brother Les to Maggie Bell after she saw him on stage performing with Alex. She was impressed and they became involved in various bands together culminating with the Scottish Rock band Stone The Crows. Les was electrocuted on stage at the Swansea Top Rank in 1972 while playing a Stone The Crows gig. Alex died in Belgium; he suffered a heart attack while waiting for a ferry, then suffered a second fatal heart attack in an ambulance on his way to hospital.

It was February the fourth 1982, the day before his 47th birthday.
6. Tom and Jack, the Alexander Brothers, are a folk music duo extremely well known in their native Scotland. They are best known for their biggest hit single, "Nobody's Child". They didn't actually write the song, it was written by Coben and Foree. What I want to know is which of these performers hasn't recorded the song?

Answer: Alex Harvey

Ringo Starr and George Harrison must have liked the song, they recorded it twice, first with The Beatles in 1961 and as members of The Travelling Wilburys in 1990 for a Romanian children's charity. Billy Fury has also covered it, but if Alex Harvey has recorded it in heaven I haven't heard it yet. Don't ask me who Coben and Foree are I haven't a clue either.
7. Runrig are a fine Scottish band; they play Folk/Rock music and they are very successful at it. They are probably most famous for their version of "Loch Lomond" which has become a must play at almost every Scottish social function. A set of brothers are among the founder members and Runrig wouldn't be Runrig without them. Who are they?

Answer: The McDonald brothers

The founder members of Runrig were brothers Rory and Calum McDonald along with Blair Douglas. The line up of the band has changed during the years, but Rory and Calum have remained throughout. Blair Douglas left and then rejoined the band. Vocalist Donnie Munro was the face of the band but he left in 1997 to pursue a political career; he was replaced by Canadian singer Bruce Guthro.
8. These brothers shot to fame on the talent show, "The X Factor". Can you name them?

Answer: The McDonald brothers

The McDonald brothers Craig and Brian, (and not Maurice and Richard who started the hamburger company), were put out at the pre semi final stage of the reality T.V. show "The X Factor" in 2006. They had been kept in on previous shows by the television viewers' vote, despite the criticism of panelist Simon Cowell who wasn't their biggest fan.

They went on to get a recording contract and have had moderate success since.
9. The Fratellis - Jon Fratelli, Mince Fratelli and Barry Fratelli - make up the fine young Scottish band The Fratellis. But are they really brothers?

Answer: Fratellis means "brothers" in Italian, they are stage names

It was thought that the Fratellis took the name of the band from the name of the brothers in the movie "The Goonies", but it has emerged that the bass player Barry Wallace was originally named Fratelli, changing it to Wallace when his mother married. So Barry is the only true Fratelli.

The real name of Jon is John Lawler and Mince is Gordon McCrory. Fratellis does mean brothers in Italian.
10. A successful Scottish band of the late eighties and early nineties had another set of brothers as the main men, Pat and Greg Kane. What was the name of the band?

Answer: Hue and Cry

Yes, Pat and Greg Kane are Hue and Cry. They had hits with such songs as "Labour Of Love" and "Looking For Linda" among others. The other selections are all Scottish bands of around the same era.
