Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Oh ------ tree Oh ----- tree You'll aye be dear tae me"

Answer: Rowan

One of the most sentimental songs ever written. Guaranteed to bring a tear to the eye. "I mind the songs my mither sang Beneath the rowan tree."
2. "Ye Banks and Braes o' Bonnie ______"

Answer: Doon

Written by the Bard- Robert Burns- this is a song of unrequited love.
3. "The Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch_______"

Answer: Lomond

This song is supposed to be the last words of a man waiting to be hanged. Thus High Road and Low Road. Given a second lease of life by Gaelic Rock Band, Runrig.
4. "O ------ of Scotland"

Answer: Flower

Written by The Corries, this song has become the National Anthem of Scotland. Sung at football and rugby matches(with gusto).
5. "Step we gaily on we go, Heel for heel and toe for toe"

Answer: Mairi's Wedding

This song sounds wonderful in the original Gaelic!
6. "Gin a body meet a body, Coming through the ---"

Answer: Rye

Another song by Robert Burns. One of his more lively ones.
7. "Ae fond ----"

Answer: Kiss

For a man who had so much luck with the ladies, Burns wrote many sad love songs.
8. "It's by Tummel and Loch Rannoch and Lochaber I will go Through heather tracks wi' heaven in their wiles"

Answer: The Road to the Isles

Take a drive along the Road To The Isles. You will see some of the most breathtaking scenery on this planet. I'm totally biased, of course.
9. "Let The Irish speak of their emerald isle Where the four leaved shamrock grows. Let the English praise their valleys and their vales and the bonnie blooming rose But give me the land of the heather and the kilt The mountains and the rivers...."

Answer: Hail Caledonia

I hope I've got this one right. It's a long time since I've heard it sung. The punchline is "Hail Caledonia, Land of My Fathers".
If I've slipped up, I'm sure somebody will let me know.
10. For the last one -a real gift: "Speed Bonny Boat like a bird on the wing. Onward! the sailors cry."

Answer: The Skye Boat Song

Perhaps the most widely known Jacobite song. I'm sorry I don't know the writer, but the song is so sad but hopeful. e.g. "Many a lad fought on that day Well the claymore could wield When the night came
Silently lay- Dead! On Culloden's field." and-- "But ere the sword, cool in the sheath Charlie will come again." He never did, and died a miserable alcoholic, but he is still remembered in song.
So ended the Jacobite Rebellion.
