Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1968 Cream gave us a number six hit which included many colors such as black, silver, white, gold and yellow. What was the name of this mournful song?

Answer: White Room

The music to "White Room" was co-written and then sung by Jack Bruce. In 1968 this song appeared on their album "Wheels of Fire". Ginger Baker played drums and Eric Clapton used the Vox Clyde McCoy Picture Wah to perfection in this classic hit. "White Room" reached number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It also reached number 28 on the UK Singles Chart in 1969. The List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time listed "White Room" as number 267. Lyricist Peter Brown, who caught Cream's attention when he was with the band The First Real Poetry Band, wrote most of Cream's songs with Jack Bruce.
The British blues-rock band, Cream, was made up of Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker.

Answer: My, My, Hey, Hey (Out of the Blue)

"My, My, Hey, Hey (Out of the Blue)" and "Hey, Hey, My, My (Into the Black)" are both featured on the 1979 Platinum album "Rust Never Sleeps" by Neil Young. This song's line "It's better to burn out, than to fade away." was the concluding line of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain's suicide note.

4. Which English rock group's release of "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" (1972) gave them a number one hit ?

Answer: The Hollies

Allan Clarke, Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway were the songwriters of the 1972 solo song release. The Hollies had produced an album titled "Distant Light" (1971), when after about a year, they decided to release the song as a single. Before the release, Clarke had left the group, but after the song became a number two hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on Cash Box in the USA, he rethought his solo career choice and instead chose to return to The Hollies. The song is most notable because of how it features Allan Clark playing the rhythm guitar in the opening of the song.
Part of a verse, where the effect of the woman on the man is described, is:
"She was a long cool woman in a black dress, Just a 5'9", beautiful, tall,
With just one look I was a bad mess,'Cause that long cool woman had it all"

5. American International Pictures released "The Wild Angels" movie in 1966. It was the first of the outlaw biker genre films of the era. It starred Peter Fonda as "Heavenly Blues" and Nancy Sinatra as his girlfriend "Mike". The film's opening music was an instrumental featuring the sounds of roaring Harleys and the fuzz tone guitar of Davie Allen of David Allen & The Arrows. Can you name it?

Answer: Blues Theme

"Blues Theme" was recorded by Davie Allen & The Arrows. Allen is best remembered today for the series of movie soundtracks he recorded in the mid to late '60s. He is also credited for his invention of the fuzz tone guitar sound. He, (along with a new set of Arrows), revived his career in the early '90s and continues to record, as of 2010, for Restless Records in Los Angeles.

6. Are you dreaming of a "White Christmas"? You wouldn't be the first person to fall asleep with visions of falling snow flakes in your dreams. Who first put these dreams into reality by writing the song "White Christmas?"

Answer: Irving Berlin

While Crosby is famous for singing the popular song, he did not write it. Berlin wrote it in the early 1940s and Crosby later popularized it both on record format and through the movie "Holiday Inn." The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1942. While it is definitely one of the most popular songs of all time, there is some historical debate on whether it is the best selling single of all time. Sales figures before the 1950s are somewhat sketchy and it us unknown how many records were sold. Based on known numbers, Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" has sold more copies (approximately 33 million). However, if the number of singles sold before the 1950s is estimated, "White Christmas" easily outsells "Candle in Wind" (50 million).
