1. In which Norwegian city was the 1996 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Oslo

The competition was held in the Oslo Spektrum in Oslo. Originally built as an arena for two ice hockey teams, it is now an arena for shows and concerts and, most notably, the Nobel Peace Prize Concert.
2. Which country won the 1996 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Ireland

Ireland won for the fourth time in five years with their entry "The Voice". Written by Brendan Graham, it was sung by Eimear Quinn and describes how 'the voice' watches over the world.
3. The UK's 1996 entry was a song called "Ooh Aah... Just a Little Bit". Who sang it?

Answer: Gina G

Written by song written by British songwriters Simon Tauber and Steve Rodway, "Ooh Aah... Just a Little Bit" was a big success in the UK, a moderate success in Europe and even made number twelve on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was sung by Gina G, an Australian singer who moved to England in 1993 to pursue her career.

Ranging from premiers to obscure functionaries, each postcard started with a political figure from the relevant country wishing the performers luck. Very few well-known persons took part in this, although it did include segments from Swedish premier Göran Persson and President Alija Izetbegoviæ of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Only one entry was sung in French this year - and it wasn't the one from France!

France's entry "Diwanit Bugale" ("May You Blossom, Children") was sung in Breton, a Celtic language very similar to Cornish, Gaelic and Welsh.

The entry sung in French was "Mon coeur l'aime" ("My Heart Loves Him"), the entry from Switzerland.

Ten countries tied for five positions in the 1996 preliminary round. Belgium and Greece tied for twelfth position with 45 points each, Cyprus and Poland tied for fifteenth position with 42 points each, Croatia and Slovenia tied for nineteenth place with thirty points each, Finland and Hungary tied for twenty-second place with twenty-six points each and Macedonia and Russia tied for twenty-sixth place with fourteen points each.

Answer: Finland

Finland made it through to the finals, despite tying with Hungary on total points. The tiebreaker was the top score received, and Finland had received a score higher than the top one received by Hungary.

Solveig Kloppen is the presenter of the Norwegian version of "Pop Idol", Harald Eia is a Norwegian comedian and Harald Tusberg (now retired) presented the Norwegian version of "This is Your Life"

Henning Engelsen, who died in 2005, was a Norwegian wood carver, Otto Jespersen is a Norwegian comedian and Hulda Garborg (1862-1934) was a Norwegian folk dancer.
