Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were Danish thrashers Artillery afraid of in 1985?

Answer: Tomorrow

"The Dark" was a Metal Church album a year later. British culinary legend Marmite was recently banned in Denmark leading to a proposed boycott of all Danish products, which would be awful for the bacon-munching Elephant-swigging metalhead.
2. Which Italian 80s metal band are credited with influencing Norwegian black metal due to their use of corpse paint (amongst other things)?

Answer: Death S.S.

Bulldozer played their part, but not for corpse paint. Raw Power were a savage hardcore punk band who crossed over into metal. The ferocity of the vocals is akin to black metal screaming, albeit the different subject matter. Vasco Rossi is a clown.
3. What was the name of the band who formed out of the ashes of Axegrinder?

Answer: Wartech

Wartech were heavily (overly) influenced by Voivod, and lacked the grittiness of Axegrinder. Final Conflict were an awesome US punk/metal outfit. "Grind The Enemy" was an Axegrinder demo and motto.
4. Which Jimi Hendrix song did Swiss technical metallers Coroner cover on "Punishment For Decadence"?

Answer: Purple Haze

Nuclear Assault did "Good Times", math-rock punkers Nomeansno did "Manic Depression", and Trouble must have had him in mind with the "Manic Frustration" album.. Agent Steel should have done "Astro Man".
5. Which black metal titan wrote the foreward to Hellhammer/Tom G. Warrior memoir "Only Death Is Real?

Answer: Nocturno Culto

Great read it is too, much better than the dull "Are You Morbid?" biog of Celtic Frost. Looking forward to Bazillion Point's Metalion book. Buy it, it's metal history.
6. Which US thrash/speed band were all called Tony on their debut album?

Answer: Whiplash

Tony Bono (RIP), Tony Scaglione and Tony Portaro. Savage Grace had two Marks, Liege Lord had one Tony, Overkill had none. Get in touch if you know of a Tony duo.
7. Which of the following bands did Jesse Pintado not play in?

Answer: Morbid Angel

In Terrorizer he played alongside Morbid Angel members, but was never in the band. True metaller, true boozehound, RIP.
8. Which UK metal band released the album "Bastard Ballads" on Peaceville in 1988?

Answer: Toranaga

All four are from Yorkshire. My Dying Bride became huge and are on Peaceville. Slammer were just too American. Toranaga got left behing being too power metal when it wasn't cool. Acid Reign were an unfunny novelty band, but folk went on to Cathedral and proved themselves worthy.
9. What was the legendary 80s metal record shop in Soho (London) called?

Answer: Shades

Helvete was the legendary metal shop in Oslo, Metal Forces was the legendary metal magazine in the UK (many writers worked in Shades) and "Metal For Muthas" was the legendary compilation album of NWOBHM.
10. Which Polish avant-garde/metal band released an album of abrasive covers called "My Firstborn Will Surely Be Born Blind"?

Answer: Dead Raven Choir

Dead Raven Choir are intriguing, one of the few bands that are actually offensive to the ears (but worth the pain). Anal Vaginator deserve a listen for the name alone. In The Dark Pit have been going since 1991 and have only released one demo, deserving a medal for perseverance/beligerence.
11. Which band released two demos under the name Tormentor before changing it in 1984?

Answer: Kreator

Tracks from the "End Of The World" are included on the rerelease of "Endless Pain". There were a few Tormentors, best of the bunch were Hungarian black metallers whose album "Anno Domini" is great fun.
12. Which seminal death metal band featured members who went onto under-achievers Sindrome?

Answer: Devastation

Trick question as none of the other answers make sense. Mantas became Death, Von were on a different thing. Seek out Devastation and Sindrome if you like the Master/Deathstrike thing. Sindrome hung out for major label interest that never came. Shame, as they were cracking.
13. Which "retro-thrash" (crap terminology) band released the album "The Traumatizer" in 2004?

Answer: Audiopain

Bastardator released the ace "Recognize The Dead" in 2009, Vomitor the brutal classic "Bleeding The Priest" in 2002. Both Audiopain and Aura Noir have such a thorough knowledge of metal to make their stuff a cut above.
14. What were underground legends Repulsion known as before the name change?

Answer: Genocide

Revulsion were a great UKHC band from Great Yarmouth (seek them out!), "Grinder" is another Judas Priest track (and probably countless bands). Repulsion's demo/album was called "Slaughter Of The Innocent" on the tape-trading circuit, and then there was, of course, the amazing Canadian Slaughter.
15. Which doom metallers covered the Cream song "Tales Of Brave Ulysses"?

Answer: Trouble

B side to "Assassin", and what a corker. St. Vitus covered Black Flag. Candlemass, rather unimaginatively, did Black Sabbath medleys. Obsessed was ex-St. Vitus guitarist Wino's act.
