Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lesson one is History; ABBA is your teacher for this and you will be taught about which important battle?

Answer: Waterloo

"Waterloo" was ABBA's first number one in Britain in 1974.
The Battle of Waterloo was fought in 1815 and saw the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte by the combined forces of The Duke of Wellington and Gebhard von Blucher.
2. Lesson two is Geography; Jo Stafford is your teacher and she prefers the medium of song: "See the pyramids along the Nile, Watch the sun rise on a tropic isle..." Which song is this?

Answer: You Belong to Me

Way back in 1953, Jo Stafford took her version of "You Belong to Me" to number one in Britain. The song has remained popular and has been covered many, many times; a version even turned up on British folk-singer Kate Rusby's 2005 album "The Girl Who Couldn't Fly".
3. Lesson three is English Literature; today's subject is "Romeo and Juliet". Who will take this class?

Answer: Dire Straits

Dire Straits took "Romeo and Juliet" to number eight in 1981. The band, led by Mark Knopfler, had four number one albums in the UK but their highest placed single was "Walk of Life"; number two in 1986.
4. Time for a break and the bad lads are up to no good, a Motley Crue indeed. What mischief are they up to?

Answer: Smoking in the Boys' Room

Motley Crue took "Smoking in the Boys' Room" to number 71 in 1985. It was a cover of Brownsville Station's number 27 hit from some eleven years earlier.
5. The next lesson is Foreign Languages; "(Si Si) Je Suis Un Rock Star". Who is this rather confused pupil?

Answer: Bill Wyman

Rolling Stones' member Bill Wyman had a solo hit with this less then memorable mix of languages in 1981. Somewhat surprisingly it got as high as number sixteen.
6. Across the corridor there is a supply-teacher doing his best to keep order but the kids are taking full advantage of his inexperience; "We don't need no education We dont need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the classroom Teachers leave us kids alone!" The struggling teacher is?

Answer: Pink Floyd

The lyrics are taken from "Another Brick in the Wall Part (Part 2)" which was a number one hit single for Pink Floyd in 1979. Pink Floyd were always more of an album band with fifteen top ten albums including five number ones.
7. Mathematics is the next lesson; I'm guessing that this is the remedial class as a certain group of pupils keep repeating that "One and One is One" Oh dear, who are they?

Answer: Medicine Head

"One and One is One" was the only top-ten success for the duo known as Medicine Head. It reached number three in 1973.
8. The lesson before the lunch break is History of Art; Don McLean is the teacher and gives you this information: "Starry, starry night Paint your palette blue and gray Look out on a summer's day With eyes that know the darkness in my soul... Shadows on the hills Sketch the trees and the daffodils," Which artist is in focus?

Answer: Van Gogh

Don McLean's "Vincent" is a tribute to Vincent van Gogh, the Dutch painter. The single reached number one in the UK charts in 1972.
9. Lunchtime; a chance to chat with friends and forge friendships that might last for years. Who sang "Do You Remember the Days of the Old School Yard?"?

Answer: Cat Stevens

"Remember the days of the old school yard
we used to laugh a lot.
Oh don't you remember the days of the old school yard.
When we had imaginings and we had all kinds of things
And we laughed and needed love
Yes I do, oh and I remember you."

Cat Stevens reached number 44 with this song in 1977.
10. Science is the first lesson after lunch and is taken by Landscape who wish to demonstrate that most scientists are party-animals. What is their lesson called?

Answer: Einstein A-Go-Go

Landscape's 1981 hit single "Einstein A-Go-Go" was a strange affair, rather short on lyrical content. It reached number five in Britain, their only top-ten success.
11. Practical Science next; who is the teacher demonstrating a "Chain Reaction"?

Answer: Diana Ross

"Chain Reaction" was written by the Gibb brothers and gave Diana Ross her first UK number one for fifteen years when it was released in 1986.
12. Erasure are standing by to take your next lesson; which subject is it?

Answer: Drama

Erasure took their single "Drama" to number four in 1989.
Not too many bigger drama queens than lead singer Andy Bell, I guess!

Answer: Sam Cooke

These lyrics come from Sam Cooke's much covered classic "Wonderful World". When first released in Britain in 1960 it only reached number 27. When re-released in 1986 it did much better and got to number two.
14. Down to the gym for the last lesson of the day, time to get "Physical". Which teacher awaits you?

Answer: Olivia Newton John

"Physical" was a rather suggestive little number from Olivia Newton John who once had cultivated the 'girl next door' persona. It reached number seven in Britain during 1981.
15. The bell finally rings to signal the end of a long day. Who sang the celebratory "School's Out"?

Answer: Alice Cooper

At the end of term disco, the teachers sing this anthem much louder than the kids! Alice Cooper took this song all the way to the top in the summer of 1972.
