Question 1 of 15
1. Feel free to sing along:
"You are my special Angel sent from up above
The Lord smiled down on me and sent an Angel to love
You are my special Angel through eternity
I'll have my special Angel here to watch over me"

Such was the blissful reverie of a young man about the object of his affection. "My Special Angel" (1957) was a "Billboard Hot 100" hit for a country singer/ guitarist who also recorded the perennial yuletide tune, "Jingle Bell Rock" the same year. Can you recall who sang this special song?
Hint

Question 2 of 15
2. Being a teenager isn't always what it's cracked up to be, what with peer pressure, the quest for someone to go steady with, and trying for good report cards, (not to mention acne!). In 1975, a 24 year old young woman, who sang from her memories of adolescence, gave us the mournful, "At Seventeen". The song hit several charts, topping a couple, and won the artist a Grammy. Seventeen seems like a hundred years ago to me, but can you remember the songstress who both sang and wrote, "At Seventeen"?

Here's a taste to help jog your memory:
"I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear-skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired

And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desp'rately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say "Come dance with me"
And murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems, at seventeen"
Hint

Question 3 of 15
3. "Happy Together" may be the most optimistic song I've ever heard. The tune was brought to us in 1967, when it was a "Billboard Hot 100" chart topper. The group of guys who released it on The White Whale label, were originally formed in Los Angeles, as The Crossfires.
By what name did we know them when they released their signature song?

Sing along to these lyrics, and the answer may slowly come to you:
"Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it's only right
To think about the girl you love
And hold her tight, so happy together

I can't see me loving nobody
But you, for all my life
When you're with me, baby
The skies will be blue for all my life"
Hint

Question 4 of 15
4. Hey folks, talk about a long term commitment, how would you feel if somebody had this to say to you?

"Baby, I'm Yours
Baby, I'm yours (baby, I'm yours)
And I'll be yours (yours) until the stars fall from the sky,
Yours (yours) until the rivers all run dry
In other words, until I die".

Those very sentiments were heard in a beautiful song called "Baby, I'm Yours" (1965), a million-plus selling number released by a Michigander who had a previous hit with "Hello Stranger" (1963).
Who was this singer-songwriter?
Hint

Question 5 of 15
5. Some guys just can't get enough of a good thing. Back in 1960, we heard "Stay" (just a little bit longer), and we heard it often as it reached Number One on the "Billboard Hot 100" chart in late November. It was recorded by a septet that went through name changes like Liz Taylor went thru husbands. The lead singer also wrote the tune, can you name the singer and his back-up group?

See if this helps:
"(Stay)
A-a-ah, just a little bit longer
(Please)
Please, please, please, please
Tell me you're going to

Now, how your daddy don't mind
And your mommy don't mind
If we have another dance
Yeah, just one more
One more time"
Hint

Question 6 of 15
6. "One, two, three, hey, look at Mr. Lee
Three, four, five, hey, look at him jive

Mr. Lee, Mr. Lee, oh, Mr. Lee
Mr. Lee, Mr. Lee, oh, Mr. Lee
Mr. Lee, Mr. Lee, oh, Mr. Lee, Mr. Lee"

You never know what is going to serve as the inspiration for a song. In one, somewhat bizarre instance, the tune "Mr. Lee" (1957), came about as the result of five students who had a teacher (whom they didn't care for), with that moniker. When it was time to record "Mr. Lee", the lyrics told quite a different tale. The quintet, originally called The Harlem Queens, was one of the earliest all-girl groups. Oh, say can you see who sang "Mr. Lee"?
Hint

Question 7 of 15
7. "Surf City" was the first of the surfing style songs, most popularly associated with The Beach Boys, to become a number one hit. The artists who cashed in on this early 60s music craze with "Surf City", had their beginnings in La-La Land, Los Angeles, CA.
The unique sounds of that genre propelled them to 15 tunes which cracked the top 40 between 1958-1966, with "Surf City" hitting Number One on both the "Billboard Hot 100" and "Cashbox" charts.

These lyrics will likely bring back some pleasant memories, but will they help you ID the group who recorded them in 1963?
"Two girls for every boy.
I got a '34 wagon
And we call it a Woody
Surf City here we come

You know it's not very cherry
It's an oldie but a goodie
Surf City here we come

Well, there's two swingin'
Honeys for every guy
And all you gotta do
Is just wink your eye"
Hint

Question 8 of 15
8. "I love how your eyes close, whenever you kiss me
And when I'm away from you, I love how you miss me
I love the way you always treat me tenderly,
But, darling, most of all, I love how you love me"

These sweet sentiments were sung by a special set of siblings from San Francisco. Musical talent ran in the family as their momma was an opera singer and she was the inspiration for her daughters becoming sibling singers.
"I Love How You Love Me" was the group's most successful number, reaching the number five spot on the "Billboard Hot 100" chart in 1961. From oldest to youngest, their first names were Albeth, Sherrell, and Priscilla, who was the trio's lead singer. What was the name they sang under?
Hint

Question 9 of 15
9. Back in the days of "The British Invasion", a male group began a multi-year tour of America in 1969. They were already immensely popular, and one of the most influential rock bands in the U.K. In 1964, they released, "You Really Got Me". The song became an international smash hit, reaching number one on the U.K. chart, while also becoming a top 10 tune in Australia, Canada, and peaked at number seven on the "Billboard Hot 100".

Sample a taste of "You Really Got Me":
"Girl, you really got me goin'
You got me so I don't know what I'm doin'
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night"

OK, now can you can name this British Band?
Hint

Question 10 of 15
10. Sometimes those three little words every enamored person wants to hear aren't all that easy to say. An artist mused about this, when she released, "I've Told Every Little Star" (1961), and took it to number three on the "Billboard Hot 100" chart. Can you name this somewhat shy singer?

See if these lyrics give you some inspiration:
"I've told every little star
Just how sweet I think you are
Why haven't I told you

I've told ripples in a brook
Made my heart an open book
Why haven't I told you"?
Hint

Question 11 of 15
11. "Take Good Care of My Baby" was a 1961 "Billboard Hot I00 chart topper. Here's how it started:

"My tears are fallin'
'Cause you've taken her away
And though it really hurts me so
There's somethin' that I've got to say

Take good care of my baby
Please don't ever make her blue
Just tell her that you love her
Make sure you're thinkin' of her
In everything you say and do"

The gracious in defeat singer hailed from Fargo, ND. Between 1959-1975 he/she released over 45 singles and a couple of dozen albums, almost all on the Liberty Records label. A year earlier, this artist had a big hit with "Rubber Ball", which reached number six on "Billboard". Can you name this performer?
Hint

Question 12 of 15
12. "Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cause you don't love me any more

Why do the birds go on singing
Why do the stars glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when I lost your love"

If this song doesn't bring a tear to your eye, nothing will. In 1963, a singer-songwriter born in Kentucky named Mary Penick took, "It's the End of the World" to number two on the "Billboard Hot 100". By the time that she recorded her signature song, she had a new sobriquet...do you know what it was?
Hint

Question 13 of 15
13. There are probably several more methods to use, but in 1976 a singer told us about "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover". I'm not quite sure of the motivation of the music lovers who bought it, but they drove the song to the number one spot on the "Billboard Hot 100" chart. The singer-songwriter-musician who recorded it was born in The Garden State of New Jersey, and is a two time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. This one should be "simple"... can you name the artist?

Perhaps this will help:
"The problem is all inside your head
She said to me
The answer is easy if you
Take it logically
I'd like to help you in your struggle
To be free
There must be fifty ways
To leave your lover"
Hint

Question 14 of 15
14. Thinking of pleasant fantasies is a great way to escape from the hum-drum existence of everyday life. In 1976 a song told of a somewhat controversial but very successful piece of hopeful reverie. Apparently millions of people could relate to "Afternoon Delight", as it became the most popular tune in America.

Here are some of what at the time, were considered to be somewhat controversial lyrics:
"Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
Gonna grab some afternoon delight
My motto's always been, when it's right it's right
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night

When everything's a little clearer in the light of day
Then we know the night is always gonna be here anyway"

Who sang this steamy song?
Hint

Question 15 of 15
15. "It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way.
You always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strain.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain".

OK, some of the previous 14 questions might have been a bit tough, so without further ado, can you just name the divine artist who sang the hauntingly heartfelt, beautiful number, "The Wind Beneath My Wings"?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Feel free to sing along: "You are my special Angel sent from up above The Lord smiled down on me and sent an Angel to love You are my special Angel through eternity I'll have my special Angel here to watch over me" Such was the blissful reverie of a young man about the object of his affection. "My Special Angel" (1957) was a "Billboard Hot 100" hit for a country singer/ guitarist who also recorded the perennial yuletide tune, "Jingle Bell Rock" the same year. Can you recall who sang this special song?

Answer: Bobby Helms

Born in Indiana on August 15, 1933, Bobby Helms enjoyed great success in 1957. His first single, "Fraulein", released on the Decca label, reached number one on the "Billboard County Singles" list, and cracked the Top 40 on the "Billboard Hot 100" chart, peaking at number 36. He followed that up with "My Special Angel", penned by Texas songwriter James Ollie "Jimmy" Duncan.
His signature song also topped the "Billboard Country Singles" chart, and climbed to number six on the "Billboard Hot 100" list.
When first released, "Jingle Bell Rock" (1957) rose to number six on "Billboard's Hot 100", and number six on their Country chart, and continues to be an annual holiday favorite.
Between 1955-1996, Helms released more than 50 singles, but all three of his Top 40 hits were recorded in 1957.
Bobby Helms is an inductee of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN.

Here's the close of "My Special Angel":
"A smile from your lips brings the summer sunshine
The tears from your eyes bring the rain
I feel your touch, your warm embrace and I'm in Heaven again

You are my special Angel through eternity
I'll have my special Angel here to watch over me"
Here's a taste to help jog your memory: "I learned the truth at seventeen That love was meant for beauty queens And high school girls with clear-skinned smiles Who married young and then retired And those of us with ravaged faces Lacking in the social graces Desp'rately remained at home Inventing lovers on the phone Who called to say "Come dance with me" And murmured vague obscenities It isn't all it seems, at seventeen"

Answer: Janis Ian

Janis Ian was born as Janis Fink on April 7, 1951. She spent her early years growing up on a farm in New Jersey. Later, she studied at the New York High School of Music and Art. "At Seventeen", which has sold over two million copies in the U.S.A., reached the top of the "Cashbox", and "Billboard Adult Contemporary" charts, and peaked at number three on the "Billboard Hot 100".
Ms. Ian's recording on the Columbia Record label earned her the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "At Seventeen" was track two on her million plus selling album, "Between the Lines", which reached number one on the "Billboard 200" album list.
A talented songwriter, she has written for Bette Midler, Sheena Easton, Amy Grant, and even Mel Torme. Ms Ian also penned "Jesse", a 1973 hit for Roberta Flack.

Interesting note: On October 11, 1975, a new TV show called "Saturday Night Live" made its debut. One of the highlights of the broadcast was Janis Ian singing, "At Seventeen".

More of Ms. Ian's musings:
"To those of us who knew the pain
Of valentines that never came
And those whose names were never called
When choosing sides for basketball

It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
And dreams were all they gave for free
To ugly ducking girls like me

We all play the game and when we dare
To cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
That call and say, "Come dance with me"
And murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me, at seventeen"
Sing along to these lyrics, and the answer may slowly come to you: "Imagine me and you, I do I think about you day and night, it's only right To think about the girl you love And hold her tight, so happy together I can't see me loving nobody But you, for all my life When you're with me, baby The skies will be blue for all my life"

Answer: The Turtles

Between The Crossfires and The Turtles, they were briefly known as The Tyrtles.
"Happy Together" spent three weeks at number one on the "Billboard Hot 100" list, beginning on March 25, 1967. The song was track six, side one on the album of the same name, just the third album they released. The Turtles were especially popular from 1965-1970, when they recorded 25 singles and released half a dozen albums. One of their other hit tunes "It Ain't Me Babe" (1965), was written by Robert Zimmerman, better known as Bob Dylan.

Here's another taste from "Happy Together":
"Me and you and you and me
No matter how they tossed the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together
So happy together

How is the weather
So happy together
We're happy together
So happy together"

Wouldn't it be nice if everybody could be so happy?
4. Hey folks, talk about a long term commitment, how would you feel if somebody had this to say to you? "Baby, I'm Yours Baby, I'm yours (baby, I'm yours) And I'll be yours (yours) until the stars fall from the sky, Yours (yours) until the rivers all run dry In other words, until I die". Those very sentiments were heard in a beautiful song called "Baby, I'm Yours" (1965), a million-plus selling number released by a Michigander who had a previous hit with "Hello Stranger" (1963). Who was this singer-songwriter?

Answer: Barbara Lewis

Barbara Lewis' best selling song, "Baby I'm Yours", peaked at number 11 on the "Billboard Hot 100" list, August 21, 1965. Her signature song was written by the prolific songwriter Van McCoy, who would later write "The Hustle" (1975). Ms. Lewis had a few other songs reach the charts, before she began devoting more time to writing songs for various artists. A couple of her other "Billboard Top 40" hits were the aforementioned "Hello Stranger" (1963), which she also wrote, "Make Me Your Baby" (1965), and "Make Me Belong To You" (1966), which reached number 28.
A number of artists have covered "Baby I'm Yours", including Jody Miller (1971), Cass Elliot (1972), KC and The Sunshine Band (1981) and Cher (1990).

Here's more of her heartfelt pledge:
"Baby, I'm yours (baby, I'm yours)
And I'll be yours (yours) until the sun no longer shines,
Yours (yours) until the poets run out of rhyme
In other words, until the end of time

Baby, I'm yours (baby, I'm yours)
And I'll be yours (yours) until two and two is three,
Yours (yours) until the mountains crumble to the sea
In other words, until eternity"

To quote Nat "King" Cole's, "The Twelfth of Never": "that's a long, long time".
See if this helps: "(Stay) A-a-ah, just a little bit longer (Please) Please, please, please, please Tell me you're going to Now, how your daddy don't mind And your mommy don't mind If we have another dance Yeah, just one more One more time"

Answer: Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs

Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs recorded "Stay" in a sweltering South Carolina
quonset hut, in 1959. The group would certainly fit the "one hit wonder" category, as "Stay", was a mega-hit, selling over eight million copies, but was their only tune to chart in the Top 40. The do-woppers started as The Royal Charms, then became The Gladiolas, before finally settling on the sobriquet of The Zodiacs.
Maurice Williams was welcomed into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, in 2010.
Memorable covers of "Stay" have been recorded by The Four Seasons (1964), Jackson Browne (1978), and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame U.K. band, The Hollies, released "Stay" in 1963.

A few more bars:
"Oh, won't you stay
Just a little bit longer
Please let me hear
You say that you will
Say you will

Won't you press your sweet lips
To mine
Won't you say you love me
All of the time"

Interesting fact: When "Stay" took over the top spot on the "Billboard Hot 100", in 1960, it was the shortest song in duration (1:50) to reach that lofty perch. Through the end of the 20th century, "Stay" still held that distinction.
6. "One, two, three, hey, look at Mr. Lee Three, four, five, hey, look at him jive Mr. Lee, Mr. Lee, oh, Mr. Lee Mr. Lee, Mr. Lee, oh, Mr. Lee Mr. Lee, Mr. Lee, oh, Mr. Lee, Mr. Lee" You never know what is going to serve as the inspiration for a song. Lee"?

Answer: The Bobbettes

The Bobbettes were originally formed in 1955 as The Harlem Queens, by five young ladies who attended school in New York City. "Mr. Lee", recorded on the Atlantic Record label, was the very first song they released, and by far the most successful. "Mr. Lee" got to number six on the "Billboard Hot 100" list, and it topped the R&B charts for a month in 1957. As it turned out, "Mr. Lee" would be The Bobbettes' only song to crack the Top 40. Despite just having the one memorable signature song, the group received a nomination for the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
Multi-Grammy Award winner, Diana Ross, included "Mr. Lee" as track six, side A, on her 1987 album, "Red Hot Rhythm & Blues.

Let's hear a bit more about "Mr. Lee":
I met my sweetie, his name is Mr. Lee
I met my sweetie, his name is Mr. Lee
Oh, he's the handsomest sweetie that you ever did see

Come on Mr. Lee and do your stuff
Come on Mr. Lee and do your stuff
'Cause you're gonna be mine till the end of time"
I got a '34 wagon And we call it a Woody Surf City here we come You know it's not very cherry It's an oldie but a goodie Surf City here we come Well, there's two swingin' Honeys for every guy And all you gotta do Is just wink your eye"

Answer: Jan and Dean

Jan Berry and Dean Tuppence, born in L.A. a year apart, met as football teammates at Emerson Jr. High School. Initially, they sang together as part of The Barons and then sang three tunes as Jan and Arnie for some unknown reason. They took up their original names in 1959, and four years later they had the number one song in the country during June, 1963. "Surf City" was track one on Jan and Dean's album, "Surf City and Other Swingin' Cities", recorded on the Atlantic Record label. Among their other songs were the popular, "Drag City" (1963), "Dead Man's Curve" (1964), and "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena" (1964). In 2008, "Dead Man's Curve" had the honor of being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Interesting fact: "Surf City" was co-written by Jan Berry, along with Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys.

Maestro, some more surf music please:
"Well, I'm going to Surf City
'Cause it's two to one
You know I'm gonna Surf City
Gonna have some fun now
Two girls for every boy

And when I get to Surf City
I'll be shootin' the curl
And checkin' out the parties
For a surfer girl

Well, I'm going to Surf City
'Cause it's two to one
You know I'm gonna Surf City
Gonna have some fun now
Two girls for every
Two girls for every boy"

Whaddya' sittin' there for? Let's go!
8. "I love how your eyes close, whenever you kiss me And when I'm away from you, I love how you miss me I love the way you always treat me tenderly, But, darling, most of all, I love how you love me" These sweet sentiments were sung by a special set of siblings from San Francisco.

Answer: The Paris Sisters

The Paris Sisters enjoyed sales of over a million copies of "I Love How You Love Me", their signature song. Only one of their other tunes managed to crack the Top 40 on "Billboard". It was titled, "He Knows I Love Him Too Much" (1962), and it was produced by the famed Phil Spector. A few of The Paris Sisters songs to chart included, "Be My Boy", number 56, "Let Me Be the One", got to 87th and "Dream Lover" squeaked in at number 91. The girls went their separate ways, disbanding in the early '70s.
Ironically, Priscilla Paris who had moved to Europe, died March 5, 2004...in Paris.

Feel free to sing along as you read some more of, "I Love How You Love Me".
"I love how your heart beats whenever I hold you
I love how you think of me without being told to
I love the way your touch is always heavenly
But, darling, most of all I love how you love me"

Interesting fact: Mrs. Paris took the young siblings to see the famous Andrews Sisters for every show they performed during a couple of week's run in the city by the bay. Before you knew it, the sisters were invited on-stage, and belted out "Rum and Coca-Cola" with Pattie, Maxene and LaVerne.
Sample a taste of "You Really Got Me": "Girl, you really got me goin' You got me so I don't know what I'm doin' Yeah, you really got me now You got me so I can't sleep at night" OK, now can you can name this British Band?

Answer: The Kinks

The Kinks were formed in 1964 and stayed together until 1996. During that time, the Kinks released over two dozen albums and more than 75 singles. "Tired of Waiting for You" (1965) was a U.K. list topper and reached number six in the states. The Kinks had one more song make it to the top spot back home, "Sunny Afternoon" (1966), and it peaked at number 14 in the U.S.A. Before becoming The Kinks, many of the members of the group sang together as The Pete Quaife Band, The Bo-Weevils, The Ramrods, and The Ravens.
The Kinks were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (1990), and the U.K. Hall of Fame (2005).

Let's wrap it up:
"Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don't know what I'm doin? now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night

You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me"
Oh no..."

Interesting fact: While in grade school, brothers Ray and Dave Davies, who were original members of The Kinks, put together a little group cleverly called The Ray Davies Quartet. One of the lead singers was some guy named Rod Stewart.
10. Sometimes those three little words every enamored person wants to hear aren't all that easy to say. An artist mused about this, when she released, "I've Told Every Little Star" (1961), and took it to number three on the "Billboard Hot 100" chart. Can you name this somewhat shy singer? See if these lyrics give you some inspiration: "I've told every little star Just how sweet I think you are Why haven't I told you I've told ripples in a brook Made my heart an open book Why haven't I told you"?

Answer: Linda Scott

Linda Scott's recording of "I've Told Every Little Star", which also reached number seven in the U.K., was written by Oscar Hammerstein II, and Jerome Kern.

Born in N.Y. on June 1, 1945 as Linda Joy Sampson, she was a frequent guest performer on Arthur Godfrey's radio show before she was a teenager. Between 1959-1971, Linda Scott released two dozen singles with her signature song peaking at number three on "Billboard", in June, 1961 (she was still in high school at the time). Two of her other releases cracked the Top 40; "Don't Bet Money, Honey" (number nine), and "I Don't Know Why" (number 12), both in 1961. Ms. Scott also co-hosted a daily musical TV show, "Where the Action Is" (1965-1967). Linda Scott also appeared in a Hollywood movie musical, "Don't Knock the Twist" (1962), with the original twister himself, Mr.Chubby Checker.

Here's the rest of Linda Scott's short, sweet, sentimental signature song:
"Friends ask me am I in love
I always answer yes
Might as well confess
If the answer's yes

Maybe you may love me too
Oh my darling if you do
Why haven't you told me"?

Lizbeth Scott was a popular American movie star of the 1940s-1950s.
Liza with a "Z", is the singer/actress daughter of the legendary Judy Garland.
Minnie Pearl was one of the greatest stars of The Grand Ole Opry for 50 years.
11. "Take Good Care of My Baby" was a 1961 "Billboard Hot I00 chart topper. Here's how it started: "My tears are fallin' 'Cause you've taken her away And though it really hurts me so There's somethin' that I've got to say Take good care of my baby Please don't ever make her blue Just tell her that you love her Make sure you're thinkin' of her In everything you say and do" The gracious in defeat singer hailed from Fargo, ND. Between 1959-1975 he/she released over 45 singles and a couple of dozen albums, almost all on the Liberty Records label. A year earlier, this artist had a big hit with "Rubber Ball", which reached number six on "Billboard". Can you name this performer?

Answer: Bobby Vee

Bobby Vee was actually born Robert Velline in 1943. He took "Take Good Care of My Baby" to number one in the Fall of 1961. During Bobby Vee's career, more than 35 of his singles made their way onto the "Billboard Hot 100" chart. Four of them were Top Ten numbers; "Devil or Angel" (1960), "Run to Him" (1961), "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" (1962), and "Come Back When You Grow Up" (1967).

Here's how "Take Good Care of My Baby" concludes:
"Well, take good care of my baby
Be just as kind as you can be
And if you should discover
That you don't really love her
Just send my baby back home to me"

"Take Good Care of My Baby", has been covered by a slew of singers including Mickey Dolenz, Frankie Valli, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, plus some guys from the U.K. called The Beatles.
The Rockabilly Hall of Fame welcomed Bobby Vee in 2011.

Interesting fact: As a result of the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, the promoters of the show they were on the way to, in Fargo, ND, found themselves in desperate need of a group to take the place of Buddy Holly and the Crickets. The local group they chose was called The Shadows and included 15 year old Bobby Vee. That performance was deemed a success, and the career of Bobby Vee had begun.
12. "Why does the sun go on shining Why does the sea rush to shore Don't they know it's the end of the world 'Cause you don't love me any more Why do the birds go on singing Why do the stars glow above Don't they know it's the end of the world It ended when I lost your love" If this song doesn't bring a tear to your eye, nothing will. In 1963, a singer-songwriter born in Kentucky named Mary Penick took, "It's the End of the World" to number two on the "Billboard Hot 100". By the time that she recorded her signature song, she had a new sobriquet...do you know what it was?

Answer: Skeeter Davis

Skeeter Davis', "It's the End of the World", also was number two on "Billboard's "Country Chart", number four on the "Billboard R&B" chart and claimed the number one spot on the "Billboard Adult Contemporary" list. While she was in high school, Skeeter Davis sang with Betty Jack Davis, as The Davis Sisters, despite the fact that not only weren't they sisters, they weren't even related. They had a Top 20 "Billboard hit with "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know" in 1958. The song was recorded a mere week before a tragic car accident, in which Betty Jack was killed and Skeeter was seriously injured.
Skeeter Davis recording of "It's the End of the World" in 1963, sold over a million copies.
Between 1959-2006, Skeeter Davis released 55 albums and more than 50 singles.
"It's the End of the World", has been covered by dozens of artists, including The Carpenters, Debbie Boone, Herman's Hermits, Johnny Mathis, and Anne Murray.

Some more of this melancholy medley:
"I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand, no, I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye"

Interesting fact: Skeeter Davis' 1996 hit, "Flame to the Fire", which reached number 11 on the "Billboard Hot Country Songs" list, was written by Dolly Parton.
Perhaps this will help: "The problem is all inside your head She said to me The answer is easy if you Take it logically I'd like to help you in your struggle To be free There must be fifty ways To leave your lover"

Answer: Paul Simon

From 1957-1970 (and later for a few short lived reunions), Paul Simon was a member of one of the greatest duos in American music history: Simon and (Art) Garfunkel. Simon has collected multiple Grammys, one of which was a Lifetime Achievement Award. "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover", which he recorded after going solo, was track four, side one on his Grammy winning Album of the Year, "Still Crazy after All These Years" (1976). For his rendition of "50 Ways", Simon won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Performance. That song and album were his only solo tunes to make it to number one on the "Billboard Hot 100 chart and "Billboard 200" album chart. Paul Simon also had several songs crack the Top Five; "Mother and Child Reunion" (1972-number four), "Kodachrome" and "Loves Me Like a Rock" (both number two in 1973), and "Slip Slidin' Away" (1977-number five). An accomplished songwriter, Paul Simon has penned over 120 songs, three of which became number one hits; "The Sound of Silence" (1966), "Mrs. Robinson" (1968), and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (1970), which has sold more than six million copies.
Paul Simon was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 along with Art Garfunkel, and again as a solo performer in 2001.

In the long run, this may be the best choice of the "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover":
"You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free"
Here are some of what at the time, were considered to be somewhat controversial lyrics: "Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight Gonna grab some afternoon delight My motto's always been, when it's right it's right Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night When everything's a little clearer in the light of day Then we know the night is always gonna be here anyway" Who sang this steamy song?

Answer: Starland Vocal Band

"Afternoon Delight" was written by Bill Danoff*, who along with his wife Kathy ("Taffy"), were originally a duo called Fat City. After Jon Carroll and Margot Chapman joined them, they took on the moniker of the Starland Vocal Band. The playfully provocative, "Afternoon Delight", reached Number One on the "Billboard Hot 100" chart, on July 10, 1976. It was also a chart topper in Canada, and back in the U.S.A., it reached number five on the "Billboard Adult Contemporary" list. The Starland Vocal Band's performance of "Afternoon Delight" won them the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, as well as the Grammy for Best Arrangement of Voices, both in 1977. The Starland Vocal Band only recorded five albums and eight singles before disbanding in 1980.
* Bill Danoff also wrote John Denver's megahit, "Take Me Home Country Roads".

Let's do a little more fantasizing:
"Be waiting for me, baby, when I come around
We can make a lot of lovin' 'fore the sun goes down

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight

Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ignite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rocket's in flight... afternoon delight"!

Interesting fact: On "Billboard's List of the Sexiest Songs of All Time", "Afternoon Delight" was number 20. (I'd like to hear the other 19 :-).
15. "It must have been cold there in my shadow, to never have sunlight on your face. You were content to let me shine, that's your way. You always walked a step behind. So I was the one with all the glory, while you were the one with all the strain.

Answer: Bette Midler

Bette Midler, "The Divine Miss M", first sang "The Wind beneath My Wings" while playing C.C. Bloom, in the movie "Beaches" (1988). The song was track two, side A, on the film's soundtrack album of the same name. The single quickly streaked up the charts until it peaked at Number One on the "Billboard Hot 100" on June 3, 1989.
"The Wind Beneath My Wings", which was written in 1982 by the duo of Larry Henly and Jeff Silbar, won two Grammys. It took the Grammy Award for Song of the Year, and Record of the Year (1990). It was also an international hit, selling well over a million copies, and was a chart topper in Australia, and a top five song in New Zealand and the U.K.
Bette Midler has appeared in over 30 movies, won multiple Grammys, Golden Globes, Emmys, and even a Tony Award. Oh, and by the way her albums have sold more than 40 million copies around the world.
Another song which she is closely associated with is "The Rose", a "Billboard Hot 100 number three hit in 1980.
On June 14, 2012, Stevie Nicks presented Ms. Midler the Sammy Kahn Songwriters Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award.

Interesting fact: Many of you may already know this, but I was surprised to learn that Bette Midler was born in Honolulu, Hawaii (December 1, 1945).

Let's finish this up with more of the wondrous, "Wind Beneath My Wings":
"It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.

Did I ever tell you you're my hero?
You're everything, everything I wish I could be.
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings".
