Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Known for their blistering guitar solos, this band's only certified Billboard Hot 100 top-40 hit contained none and came as a surprise (and was sequenced deep into the album) and was on their "Signals" album. Some lyrics went as follows: "He's a radio receiver tuned to factories and farms. He's a writer and a ranger and a young boy bearing arms." What band had this hit?

Answer: Rush

The song "New World Man" was originally meant as a "filler" to not have a few minutes of blank tape on the second side of the cassette version of the album. Originally titled "Project 3:57" for the length of time needed for the filler, the song peaked at number 21 on the Billboard singles chart for the U.S. It took Rush one day to write and record their only certified hit.
2. Pat Benatar's "Get Nervous" album spawned three hits. The opener, "Shadows of the Night" reached the Billboard Hot 100 at number 13. Another was "Looking for a Stranger," just scraping the charts, peaking at number 39. The other opened the second side of the album and goes like, "And now you come back, runnin' for protection. You've been bitten by love and stung by rejection. You can't connect. What did you expect? I'm still gettin' over you." What was that song?

Answer: Little Too Late

"Little Too Late" peaked at number 20. With the chorus, "It's a little too little, it's a little too late. I'm a little too hurt and there's nothing more that I got to say." Period.
3. Fleetwood Mac had an album in 1982 called "Mirage" which contained several hits. One of them opened the album and peaked at Billboard Hot 100 number 22 and was co-written by, and featured, Christine McVie on vocals with these lyrics, "Never take your love away. Beggin' you baby." Name the song.

Answer: Love in Store

Widely since forgotten in the mix of other hits the band had, this song received substantial airplay in late 1982 to early 1983.
4. With lyrics like, "This burning heart of mine, it still hurts after all this time. This burning heart in me won't let me be," this metal band's power ballad hit (peaked at Billboard Hot 100 number 39) was featured on their eponymously-named debut album. Name the band.

Answer: Vandenberg

The band was never able to replicate the success it had with its first album and AllMusic later said it was, "easily one of the most underrated debut metal albums of the '80s."
5. A Flock of Seagulls are mostly remembered for their hit song "(I Ran) So Far Away" from their eponymously-named first album. But they had another hit on this album as well. It contained these lyrics: "I saw your eyes and you touched my mind. Although it took a while, I was falling in love."

Answer: Space Age Love Song

The band wrote and recorded the song without ever coming up with a title for it. Finally, with the song sounding like one, they went with "Space Age Love Song."
6. "So forget all that you see. It's not reality (it's just a fantasy)," were lyrics of a song from this artist's first eponymously-named album. "Fantasy" peaked out at Billboard Hot 100 number 23 and was this artist's flash-in-the-pan hit. Name the artist.

Answer: Aldo Nova

Aldo Nova released "Aldo Nova" in 1982. Never able to replicate the success of this first and only hit, he saw album sales of each consecutive album decline throughout the remainder of his career.
7. Saga released an album "World's Apart" in late 1981. It contained their only hit, a song which peaked later in 1982 at Billboard Hot 100 number 26. "I see the problem start. I watch the tension grow. I see you keeping it to yourself. And then instead of reaching conclusions, I see you reaching for something else," were lyrics to what song?

Answer: On the Loose

"No one can stop you now. Tonight you're on the loose." "On the Loose" went on to be Saga's best and only hit on an album that had more than one cover depending on where you bought it.
8. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were on the charts in 1982 with two hits from their "Long After Dark" album. The lesser hit peaked at Billboard Hot 100 number 21 with lyrics like, "You never needed me. You only wanted me around. It gets me down." And that hit was?

Answer: Change of Heart

"Change of Heart" has largely been forgotten, even by the band that wrote it and though it only tracked one spot short of its sister hit, "You Got Lucky," they failed to find room for it on their "Greatest Hits" album.
9. The Fixx was another band to debut in late 1982. They had two hits off their "Shuttered Room" album, one being "Stand or Fall" and the other dealt with the prospect of nuclear annihilation. What was that song?

Answer: Red Skies

This song had ominous lyrics like, "Should have taken warning, it's just people mourning. Running, hiding, lost....You can't find, find a place to go, so it's Red Skies at night."
10. In 1982, Don Henley released his first solo album that spawned a big hit, "Dirty Laundry." However, the album's title song, a love ballad, was a minor hit, reaching Billboard Hot 100 number 48. Name this song. (Hint: It's also the name of the album "Dirty Laundry" was on).

Answer: I Can't Stand Still

"I Can't Stand Still" was sequenced as the first song on the album, a spot usually reserved for what's considered the strongest track of an album. It didn't do as well on the charts, however, as "Dirty Laundry" and "Johnny Can't Read."
