Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Well, when I woke up the rain was pourin' down There were people standing all around Something warm a-running in my eyes but I found my baby somehow that night I raised her head and when she smiled and said "Hold me darling for a little while"' What's the name of this sad, sad song?

Answer: Last Kiss

'Last Kiss' was originally recorded by Wayne Cochran but the cover version by J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers was the one that earned a gold record and went to number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1964.
2. 'They asked me how I knew my true love was true I of course replied "Something here inside cannot be denied"' Not as sad, but may cause tears in your eyes, what's the name?

Answer: Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' was a show tune from a 1933 musical. Nat King Cole covered the song in 1946 but the Platters version released in 1958 was probably the most popular. It was on top of the charts in the U.K. for five weeks, number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number three on R & B charts.

This song has been covered by nearly 60 artists ranging from Jerry Garcia and Cher to Louis Armstrong and Tommy Dorsey.
3. 'I went back outside and I waited at the gate and I watched the beacon light from the control tower as it whipped through the dark ebony skies, as if it were searching for my ebony eyes. And then came the announcement over the loudspeaker: "Would those having relatives or friends on flight number 1203 please report to the chapel across the street at once."' Wipe your eyes and tell me the name of this tear jerker.

Answer: Ebony Eyes

The Everly Brothers sang 'Ebony Eyes' in 1961 and charted at number one in the U.K. even after it was banned by the BBC. Apparently they initially felt a song about an airplane tragedy was too upsetting. In the U.S., it reached number eight on the charts.
4. 'Well, I wasn't about to slam on the brakes cause I didn't have none to start with, So I swerved to the left and what do I see Some mush head on a motorcycle heading right at us and I knew At last me and my baby were about to meet the leader of the pack' What does the singer want?

Answer: I Want My Baby Back

Jimmy Cross recorded this version of 'I Want My Baby Back' in 1965. That same year The Downliner Sect covered the song and it was banned in the U.K. I get the impression they're very strict "across the pond". Imagine being put off by a guy missing his girl so much that he digs up her coffin.
This is not the Chili's (restaurant) Baby Back ad song, or the one covered by N Sync or the cartoon gang from The Cleveland Show. This also is not the same song recorded by David Bowie or Stevie Wonder.
5. 'If you ever think about me; if I ever cross your mind Girl, girl, if you ever think about me; pretty baby, if I ever cross your mind Whoa, yeah, well, you know, you know I'm yours, I know I know you're mine' So, make up your mind, what's the name of this song?

Answer: There is Something on Your Mind

Bobby Marchan recorded and released the novelty song 'There is Something On Your Mind (Part 2)' in 1960. It charted at number forty-two on the U.S. pop chart and number two on the R&B chart. It's been covered by the likes of Freddy Fender and B.B. King.
6. 'I'll be good to him, I'll bring love to him Everyone says there'll come a day when I'll walk alongside of him (Refrain) Why can't he see, how blind can he be Someday he'll see that he was meant for me' Do you know what the song is?

Answer: To Know Him Is To Love Him

Phil Spector wrote 'To Know Him Is To Love Him'. His group, the Teddy Bears, recorded the song and it went to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1958. The Beatles recorded a version called 'To Know Her Is to Love Her'. Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Linda Ronstadt made an album, 'Trio', and included this song. It went to number one on the country charts.
7. 'Ran in the water, heart full of fear; there in the breakers I saw her near Reached for my darlin', held her to me; stole her away from the angry sea I looked at the sea and it seemed to say "You took your baby from me away." My heart cried out "she's mine to keep; I saved my baby from an ____________"' Just what was my baby saved from?

Answer: Endless Sleep

'Endless Sleep' was Jody Reynolds first (and really only) big hit. It went to number five on the U.S. charts. He wrote the song and released it in 1958. The song has been covered by Hank Williams Jr., the Judds and Billy Idol.
8. 'An old cowboy went riding out one dark and windy day Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw A-plowing through the ragged sky and up the cloudy draw' What did the old cowboy see or say?

Answer: Ghost Riders In The Sky

Burl Ives was the first to record 'Ghost Riders In The Sky' in February of 1949, then Vaughn Monroe recorded it in March of 1949. It went to number one on the U.S. charts. It's been covered by more than fifty musicians over the years.
9. 'Each time we have a quarrel it almost breaks my heart 'Cause I'm so afraid that we will have to part Each night I ask the stars up above Why must I be _____________' What title goes in the space?

Answer: A Teenager In Love

'A Teenager In Love' was recorded by Dion And The Belmonts in 1959. It reached number five in the U.S. and three versions were on the British Top 20 charts. The song has been covered by a wide variety of artists like The Fleetwoods, Connie Stevens, Red Hot Chili Peppers and even Bob Marley.
10. 'But my love for Feleena is strong and I rise where I've fallen, though I am weary I can't stop to rest. I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle. I feel the bullet go deep in my chest. From out of nowhere Feleena has found me, kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side. Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for, one little kiss and Feleena, good-bye.' What west Texas town was Feleena in?

Answer: El Paso

Marty Robbins sang the ballad 'El Paso' in 1959. It made it to number one on both the U.S. Billboard 100 and Hot C&W charts. Robbins tells the story of a dancer named Feleena who works in Rosa's Cantina. If you go to El Paso, you'll find Rosa's Cantina.

The song was popular with Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, who covered it in live concerts. Steve Martin covered the song in a music video with a miniature pony, chimpanzees, an orangutan, and an elephant. I think you just have to see that one.
