Michael Nesmith of The Monkees wrote "Mary, Mary" and in 1966 The Paul Butterfield Blues Band included the song as a track on their "East-West" album. Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield played on the tracks for "Mary, Mary".
In 1968 The Monkees released the song as a single with "What am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?" on the flip-side. Michael Nesmith produced the recording that included session players Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, James Burton, Jim Gordon and Larry Knechtel. "Mary, Mary" was included in five episodes of "The Monkees" television series.

There were two versions recorded for single release. The faster version received more airplay and went to the Top Ten.
Lead singer Frankie Valli scored a solo hit a month earlier with "Can't Take My Eyes Off You".
"C'mon Marianne" was the final US Top Ten for The Four Seasons in the sixties. The group didn't have another US Top Ten hit until "Who Loves You" reached Number Three in 1975.
In 1976 Donnie Osmond recorded a Disco version of "C'mon Marianne" on his "Disco Train" LP.

"Maria Elena" was performed by two brothers who played guitar and came from Brazil, who recorded under the name of Los Indios Tabajaras. They began performing in ceremonial costumes as Natalicio and Antenor Lima and became popular throughout South America.

They eventually were signed to RCA Records' South American division and originally recorded "Maria Elena" in 1958. The song had been written in tribute to the wife of a Mexican president.
