Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who did not participate in the designing of the artwork on the album?

Answer: Geoff Emerick

Peter Blake designed the front cover, Robert Fraser took the picture, and The Fool designed the inside. The front cover was inspired by a picture of the band that Paul's father conducted. Geoff Emerick was an engineer.
2. How many of the Sgt. Peppers band members were mentioned by name in "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"? (Not counting Sgt. Pepper himself).

Answer: 1

Only Billy Shears (played by Ringo Starr) was mentioned by name in the album's first song.
3. Which line was not originally part of "With a Little Help From My Friends?"

Answer: Would you stand up and walk out on me

This song was originally written beginning with "What would you think if I sang out of tune, would you stand up and throw tomatoes at me?" In the early sixties, George said he liked jelly babies and was pelted with jelly beans on stage a little while later. Ringo was afraid he would have tomatoes hurled at him, so he asked John and Paul to change it.

There wouldn't have been much of a problem, since the Beatles ended their last tour seven months before this song was recorded.
4. Which statement about the flowers in "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is incorrect?

Answer: They are eaten by rockinghorse people

The rockinghorse people eat marshmallow pies. A drawing Julian Lennon made of a schoolmate named Lucy, which he showed to John, inspired this song. People misinterpreted the title as a reference to, of course, LSD (Lucy, Sky, Diamonds).
5. Which company used "Getting Better" in one of its commercials?

Answer: Phillips

Phillips, the television manufacturer, used a few lines of "Getting Better" at the end of a commercial.
6. Which of these activities does Paul not do in his house in "Fixing a Hole"?

Answer: Mend a fuse

"Mending a fuse" is from Paul's "When I'm Sixty-Four." P.S.: I hope you didn't choose "Fix a hole."
7. Which two Beatles did not participate in the recording of "She's Leaving Home"?

Answer: George and Ringo

John and Paul sang and Mike Leander and session musicians performed the string arrangements.
8. John found a circus poster at a flea market, which he used almost word-for-word to write the words to "Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" In what year did the event take place?

Answer: 1843

The circus took place in 1843. On the top it reads, "Pablo Fanques Fair presents the Hendersons For the Benefit of Mr. Kite."
9. Which of these instruments was not featured on "Within You Without You"?

Answer: Trombone

Violins, cellos, and the tabla in "Within You Without You" were played by session musicians. George, who wrote the song, is credited to vocal, sitar, guitar and tambura.
10. Which of the following statements about "When I'm Sixty-Four" is correct?

Answer: Paul's vocals were sped up

Paul's vocals were sped up a little for the final version of the song. John and George were in the background, session musicians played clarinets, and "When I'm Sixty-Four," which was the only "Sgt. Pepper" song recorded in 1966, was the first song recorded for the album.
11. Which of these statements about the first time Paul caught a glimpse of Rita in "Lovely Rita Meter Maid" is false?

Answer: She was emptying the parking meter

"Filling in a ticket in her little white book, in a cap she looked much older, and the bag across her shoulder made her look like a military man." -Paul. She was standing by the meter, not emptying it.
12. What was "Good Morning Good Morning" before John wrote the song?

Answer: A cereal jingle

"Good Morning Good Morning" was the name of a jingle for a Corn Flakes commercial. It was this commercial that inspired John to write the song.
13. Which Beatle did not sing on "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)"?

Answer: Ringo

Ringo's only vocal appearance on the entire album was on "With a Little Help From My Friends": Ringo is credited to back-up vicals on both these songs.
14. Which of these people did not strike a note on a piano for the 45-second final chord of "A Day in the Life"?

Answer: George Martin

John, Paul, Ringo, and Malcolm Evans played on only three pianos for the final chord. It is a little known fact that Martin compounded the sound of the chord further by playing a note on a harmonium
15. In what month was the album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" released in the US?

Answer: June 1967

The UK release date was May 26, a little earlier than originally planned. It was June 2nd in the US. Thanks for playing!
