Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first drummer who played with The Beatles before Ringo Starr?

Answer: Pete Best

Pete Best was the first Beatle drummer. His tenure was interrupted when the band selected a certain Ringo Starr (also known as Richard Starkey) to play for Best. After this decision, people started picket lines outside shows saying things like "Best is best" and "Best is bingo, not Ringo".

The Beatle's Producer, George Martin, at the same time picked another drummer without the band's permission. This is the reason that session drummer Andy White appears on the LP cut of the hit single "Love Me Do". Stu Sutcliffe was the original bassist of The Beatles, while Richard Starkey is Ringo Starr's real name.
2. Where did the Beatles make their first famous live U.S. television appearance?

Answer: The Ed Sullivan Show

The Beatles made three legendary appearances on the Ed Sullivan show. Their first appearance in the U.K. was in '62 on Granada's 'People and Places', while they were still in the Cavern; in fact it was Ringo's first appearance with the band.
3. John Lennon and Cynthia Powell wed in what year?

Answer: 1962

John Winston Lennon and Cynthia Powell were married on August 23, 1962 at the Mount Pleasant Registry Office in Liverpool. Their marriage was kept a secret for awhile by Brian Epstein, the Beatles' manager in order to keep female Beatles' fans hopes up.
4. The Beatles' song "Helter Skelter" allegedly caused who to commit murder?

Answer: Charles Manson

Charles Manson believed that the Beatles were angels sent from God to show the sign of corruption and evil needs to end. He and his "children" committed murders in the Beatles' name and wrote the words "Helter Skelter" and "Piggies" on the wall of the murder scene. (Which were both songs on the "White Album")
5. What was the earliest song written by George Harrison?

Answer: Don't Bother Me

Harrison wrote his first song, "Don't Bother Me" and said he did it "to see if I could write a song", as he remembered. "Don't Bother Me" appeared on the second Beatles album (With the Beatles) late that year, on "Meet the Beatles!" in the US in early 1964, and also in "A Hard Day's Night". Harrison was either allowed or wrote one song per album until he wrote 3 songs on the Beatles' album "Revolver". Harrison never wrote more than 3 songs per album in his Beatles tenure.
6. What was the first song that gave Ringo sole credit as a writer?

Answer: Don't Pass Me By

"Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden" are credited to Ringo alone, "Yellow Submarine" is a Lennon/McCartney song on which he sings lead, and he shares credit with Lennon/McCartney for "What Goes On".
7. In the song, "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", what was Paul McCartney's mistake?

Answer: He says "Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face" instead of "Molly"

Paul says "Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face" instead of "Molly". He insisted on re-recording because he wanted it to be perfect. In the end, the whole band, including McCartney, decided it was better with the mistake because they wanted to see if fans would notice.
8. The movie, "Let it Be", was originally documented to show how to make a record and to show the Beatles "live" in studio. Instead, what did the movie "Let It Be" accidentally document?

Answer: The Beatles drifting apart

The original plot of the film was to see the Beatles live in studio, and how to produce an album. Unfortunately, the movie showed the band drifting apart, instead of its original purpose.
9. The song, "Golden Slumbers", is based on a poem by what poet?

Answer: Thomas Dekker

It was initially released on Abbey Road. Mainly written by Paul McCartney, it is based upon a poem by Thomas Dekker and written in a lullaby style.McCartney got the idea for the song when he was at his father's house. He was going through old books and found this poem along with music for it. Paul immediately fell in love with the poem, but since he could not read music, wrote his own music and some extra lyrics.
10. In what year did the Beatles publicly announce their break up?

Answer: 1970

John wanted to dissolve the band in 1969, but was persuaded to stay in the band, by Paul McCartney, until the release of their final album, "Let it Be". By the end of 1969, Lennon had effectively left the band. Paul, George and Ringo were re-working George's 'I, Me, Mine' in early 1970 and the three members of the band still existed as a unit. Paul's announcement in the press on April 10th, 1970 started the breakup, and the official dissolution of the partnership was in 1975.
