Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After a brief spell in prison, this singer helped to found Black Sabbath. His outrageous antics both on and off stage led to a split with the band. In recent years he has become a cult TV personality.

Answer: John "Ozzy" Osbourne

From snorting ants to decapitating bats, the stories about "Ozzy" are legion. Amazingly most of them appear to be true!
2. This singer and multi-instrumentalist found success in three different bands: The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith before embarking on a successful solo career.

Answer: Steve Winwood

The highly acclaimed Steve Winwood has played with some of the biggest names in rock including Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.
The other three names listed co-founded Traffic with Stevie.
3. This singer and guitarist was in cult Birmingham band The Idle Race, before joining The Move and then co-founding ELO, with whom he had huge international success.

Answer: Jeff Lynne

Jeff later became a hugely successful record producer, and also joined The Travelling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and others.
If you listen carefully to ELO's "All Over the World", you can hear a mention of Shard End, the area of Birmingham Jeff grew up in!
4. This singer and multi-instrumentalist was in legendary Birmingham band Mike Sheridan and the Nightriders before co-founding both The Move and ELO. He left ELO before they became really successful, but found further success with his glam-rock band, Wizzard.

Answer: Roy Wood

The Wizzard hit, "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day", charmingly gives a credit to "The Stockland Green Bilateral School First Year Choir": Roy has always been proud of his Birmingham roots.
5. This one's a little more difficult. This founder member of The Move left the band shortly after a now famous on-stage altercation with the band's drummer!

Answer: Trevor Burton

Trevor was a blues man through and through and didn't like the "poppy" direction The Move was taking. He hated "Blackberry Way" and one night in Sweden launched an attack on the drummer when he insisted they play that number.
Trevor still plays the blues with a passion in local Birmingham pubs
and clubs, so if you're ever in town with an evening to kill, you could do worse than seeing him.
6. Guitarist and singer with The Moody Blues, this man left the band soon after their early successes. He was part of several largely unsuccessful projects until linking up with Paul McCartney in Wings, who had massive single and album successes worldwide.

Answer: Denny Laine

The Moody Blues tried hard to get sponsorship from local brewery M&Bs, hence the band's initials. Denny sang lead vocals on one of their biggest hits, "Go Now".
7. Guitarist who lost the tips of two fingers in a factory accident. Despite this setback, his driving riffs helped to define his band's sound, and also helped give birth to "Heavy Metal".

Answer: Tony Iommi

Tony had this potentially disastrous accident on the day he was giving up work to tour with Black Sabbath. At first it was feared he would not be able to play, but encouraged by the story of Django Rheinhardt he managed to devise a way of playing, aided by two sewing thimbles!
8. Drummer with several local bands but more famously with both The Move and ELO. He was also briefly the sticksman for Black Sabbath.

Answer: Bev Bevan

Bev was the target of Trevor Burton's on stage assault.
He can now be found playing records on a local radio station.
9. Remarkably the "Brum beat" group The Band of Joy contained two members destined for worldwide stardom: the vocalist and the drummer both were to join a band initially called The New Yardbirds. They soon changed this name and went on to become one of the biggest rock groups of all time. The singer was?

Answer: Robert Plant

Yes, The New Yardbirds became Led Zeppelin.
Robert was born in West Bromwich, just a few miles up the road from Birmingham. He still has roots in the midlands and occasionally plays unannounced gigs in the Kidderminster area.
10. And the drummer with The Band of Joy was?

Answer: John Bonham

John Bonham hailed from Redditch, some twenty miles South of Birmingham.
Of the thirty names given as "wrong" answers all bar one had some part to play in "Brum beat". My thanks to them and to the many others not mentioned for their part in a dynamic piece of local history.
