Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What better song to start my quiz with than the title of the quiz. Who originally recorded the song "Up, Up and Away"?

Answer: The Fifth Dimension

"Up, Up and Away" was written by Jimmy Webb in 1967 and first recorded by The Fifth Dimension. Various versions of this song have also been done by Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Impressions and let's not forget Mrs Miller's rendition! For those of you that have never heard of Mrs Miller, she was an American lady known for her off-key and awful renditions of various songs. LOL!
2. "And when she knows what She wants from her time And when she wakes up And makes up her mind" Do you remember which song these lyrics are from?

Answer: Uptown Girl

Ahhh who could forget the beat of "Uptown Girl"? The song was written and performed by Billy Joel and was released on his album "An Innocent Man". One of my favourite Billy Joel songs :)
3. Which band had a hit with "Word Up"?

Answer: Cameo

"Word Up" was written by Cameo's founder Larry Blackmon and Thomas Jenkins who was a member of the group and was a funk/hip hop song. The song was also covered by American nu-metal band, Korn.
4. "You Light Up My Life" was originally written for a soundtrack to a movie of the same name by Joe Brooks. Brooks originally wrote it as a ballad but who interpreted it as an inspirational song?

Answer: Debby Boone

Debby Boone, daughter of singer-actor Pat Boone, recorded this. The devout Boone interpreted the song as inspirational, proclaiming that it was God who "lit up her life."

Her rendition went on to be nominated as 'Record of the Year' in 1977.
5. Did the producer of "An Officer and Gentleman" demand that the song "Up Where We Belong" be cut from the movie?

Answer: Yes

Fortunately Don Simpson, the producer, who said (and I quote) ""The song is no good. It isn't a hit", was overruled. The song was sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes who won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1983.
6. "Get Up, Stand Up" written and sung by Bob Marley, is about what?

Answer: Religious Hypocrisy

Bob Marley was a Rastafarian and was trying to convey in this song that any religion should strengthen and enable all people to live in peace together.

Marley also goes on to remind people that God will not "come down from the sky" and take away their problems but they should "Get Up, Stand Up" and do things for themselves.

"Get up stand up stand up for your rights
Get up stand up don't give up the fight...
Most people think great God will come down from the sky
Take away everything and make everybody feel high
If you know what life is worth you will look for yours on earth
Now that you see the light, stand up for your rights"
7. "Start Me Up", by the Rolling Stones, was used by which corporation as a marketing campaign?

Answer: Microsoft

Microsoft was the first corporation which the Rolling Stones allowed their music to be used in advertising.

Before Microsoft, Bet Canada used it to broadcast on the offshore ship Radio Caroline but due to it being broadcast from international waters, the use was outside of copyright enforcement.
8. "There's a place up ahead and I'm going just as fast as my feet can fly Come away, come away if you're going, Leave the sinking ship behind." Do you recognise these lyrics?

Answer: Up Around the Bend

"Come on the rising wind,
We're going up around the bend."

Yeah, great song from Creedence Clearwater Revival, or CCR, as they are popularly known.
9. Can you complete the name of this song-- "Wake Up Little..."?

Answer: Susie

"Wake Up Little Susie" was recorded by The Everley Brothers and was thought to be "suggestive" so much so that it was banned by Boston radio stations. It was merely a song about two teenagers going to a drive-in movie and falling asleep because the move was boring. They were past their curfew and were worried about what their parents were going to say!
10. "When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary; When troubles come and my heart burdened be; Then, I am still and wait here in the silence, Until you come and sit awhile with me." Do you recognize these lyrics?

Answer: You Raise Me Up

"You Raise Me Up" - beautiful lyrics and sung by many artists but made famous by Josh Groban. I have noticed that there is a tendency to play this song at funerals in South Africa. What a tribute!
