Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Up, Up, and Away" was a big 1967 hit on the Billboard charts. All of these recording artists cut a version of the song. Which charted best?

Answer: The Fifth Dimension

All four of the acts recorded this Jimmy Webb penned tune in 1967, but it was The Fifth Dimension who scored the hit, reaching number seven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts. All of the others recorded the songs as album cuts, but none of those ever made the charts. The Fifth Dimension version won three Grammy Awards in 1968.
2. Gerry Goffin and Carole King penned this 1962 tune that first became a hit for the Drifters. Can you name it?

Answer: Up on the Roof

The only song listed that was recorded by The Drifters was "Up on the Roof" which was a smash hit in the U.S. in 1962. The song was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, who were preeminent songwriters of the era. The song itself reached as high as number five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts. It is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 113.
3. "Come Back When You Grow Up" was recorded by this solo artist with a one letter sounding last name. His name was Bobby___

Answer: Vee

Bobby Vee was a popular solo recording artist during the early and mid 1960s with songs such as "Rubber Ball", "Take Good Care of My Baby", and the aforementioned "Come Back When You Grow Up", a 1967 hit that reached number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts.

As a real trivia note, Vee and his newly formed band, which were called The Shadows, were one of the volunteer acts that replaced Buddy Holly on the next stop of the tour after the plane crash that took Holly's life.
4. The Beach Boys version of "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)" was a number one hit for the band in 1964.

Answer: False

Nope. The song was released as a single in 1964 and got as high as number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The song did make it to the top of the Canadian charts. It was later featured as part of a 1965 album called "The Beach Boys Today!" Oddly, it appeared on the album almost one year after its release as a single.
5. "Build Me Up Buttercup" was a 1968 hit for this British based band. Can you name them?

Answer: The Foundations

All the groups mentioned were from the U.K. during that period but the group that scored in the U.S. with "Build Me Up Buttercup" was The Foundations, who formed in London England. The song itself was a number three hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts as well as a number two charting single in the group's native country.
6. "Up on Cripple Creek" was a late 1960s hit made popular by this band who also toured with Bob Dylan. What band was this?

Answer: The Band

While all the groups are associated with Dylan in some way, the group that actually toured as his backup band in 1965 and 1966 was The Band. The group became popular with music critics and went out on their own in the late 1960s. Led by Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson they scored their biggest U.S. hit with "Up on Cripple Creek" which got as high as number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
7. "Up the Ladder to the Roof" was the last single released by The Supremes that featured Diana Ross.

Answer: False

Nope. Actually, "Up the Ladder to the Roof" was the first single that did not include Diana Ross as a member of The Supremes. She had left the group a mere two weeks earlier for a solo career and was replaced by Jean Terrell who sang lead on this track.

The 1970 charting song became a Top 10 hit for the group, peaking at number ten in the U.S. as well as number eight in Canada and number six in the U.K.
8. The Rolling Stones make our quiz with a 1981 tune that has been used commercially by such companies as Microsoft and Ford. Nevertheless it's a great party tune. Can you fill in the blank?

Answer: Start Me Up

"Start Me Up" was a 1981 Rolling Stones tune that made it to number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts and number seven on the U.K. charts. The song was originally written back in 1975 and was never used until 1981 when it was reworked and released as part of the "Tattoo You" album.

The song was used by Microsoft in their Windows 95 ads in 1995, and was also used by Ford Motor Company in one of their ad campaigns.
9. "Up Where We Belong" was a 1982 hit single for Joe Cocker and this female counterpart. Can you name her?

Answer: Jennifer Warnes

Jennifer Warnes combined her talents with those of Joe Cocker to record "Up Where We Belong" which was a part of the soundtrack from the 1982 motion picture "An Officer and a Gentleman". The song was a number one tune in the U.S., reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for a three week stay, and also reached number seven in the U.K.

It won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1983. Warnes also had a duet later in the decade called "I've Had the Time of My Life" along with Bill Medley, which was part of the soundtrack of 1987's "Dirty Dancing".
10. The late 1980s song "Straight Up" propelled this dance queen and idol to stardom. Can you name her?

Answer: Paula Abdul

"Straight Up" was a 1988/1989 smash hit for singer Paula Abdul, who was making it big on the Dance charts. This song put her into the mainstream when it soared to the top of the U.S. Hot 100 charts in the winter of 1989, and stayed there for three weeks.

The song also became a Top Five hit in Australia, The U.K., Canada and Germany. Of course, the 'idol' reference is to her long tenure on the U.S. television show "American Idol".
