Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Actor who played Mr. Blonde in "Reservoir Dogs" (1992) and brother to Oscar nominee Virginia.

Answer: Michael Madsen

Madsen is one of a number of actors who regularly appear in Quentin Tarantino directed movies. Aside from "Reservoir Dogs" he has also appeared in "Kill Bill: Vol. 1" (2003) and "Kill Bill: Vol. 2" (2004) as well as "The Hateful Eight" (2015). He was also Tarantino's first choice to play the part of Vincent Vega in "Pulp Fiction" (1994), a role that went to John Travolta after Madsen turned it down.

His sister Virginia was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her part in "Sideways" (2004).
2. British politician. Minister of State for the Environment between 1997 and 2003.

Answer: Michael Meacher

Meacher first stood as a political candidate for the Labour party in 1966 and was first elected in 1970. He quickly rose through the ranks and served as a member of the shadow cabinet between 1983 and 1997, while Labour were in opposition. When the party won the 1997 General Election under Tony Blair, he was appointed as Minister of State for the Environment, a position he held until he was replaced by Elliot Morley in 2003.
3. Actor and mime that played Professor Ping in "Barbarella" (1968).

Answer: Marcel Marceau

Marceau was known throughout the world for his character of Bip the Clown, as well as his intuitive understanding of mime as an art form. He began performing as Bip in 1947 and the 1968 movie "Barbarella" starring Jane Fonda was the first time his voice had been heard on screen.

In the 1976 Mel Brooks movie, "Silent Movie", he had the ironic honour of the speaking the only word uttered in the film.
4. Ice hockey great, Six time Stanley Cup winner with Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers.

Answer: Mark Messier

After winning five Stanley Cups with the Oilers between 1979 and 1991, Messier moved to the Rangers, where in 1994 he made history by becoming the first ever player to captain two teams to Stanley Cup championships. Following the Rangers, he played for the Vancouver Canucks between 1997 and 2000, before rejoining the Rangers for three seasons until he announced his retirement, having played in the NHL for 25 seasons, over a four decade period (1979-2004).
5. Played Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the TV show, "Hannibal" (2013-2015).

Answer: Mads Mikkelsen

Danish born Mikkelsen made a splash in his movie debut in his homeland, when he attracted rave reviews for his role as Tonny in "Pusher" (1996), and first attracted international attention when he was cast as Le Chiffre in the James Bond movie, "Casino Royale" (2006).

He can also be seen towards the end of Rihanna's music video for "Better Have My Money" (2015), playing the part of the accountant, tied to a chair.
6. United States Navy SEAL, who in 2007 became the first member of the U.S. Navy to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War.

Answer: Michael Murphy

Murphy and his reconnaissance team were on a mission in the mountains of Kunar province, Afghanistan in 2005, when they were attacked by Taliban forces. A helicopter loaded with reinforcements was dispatched to rescue them, but this was shot down, killing all 16 people on board.

In order to obtain a clear signal to contact headquarters to advise of their situation, Murphy broke cover and headed to a clearing for better reception. Doing so exposed him to continual gunfire but he was able to request support for his team before succumbing to his wounds.

He was buried with full military honors at Calverton National Cemetery in 2005 and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush.
7. Documentary maker and 2002 Oscar winner for "Bowling For Columbine" (2002).

Answer: Michael Moore

Moore has never been known to shy away from the tough questions and has made documentaries about health care in USA, the presidencies of George W. Bush and Donald Trump as well as his award winning film about the 1999 Columbine High School massacre. He has also staged a one-man Broadway show entitled "The Terms Of My Surrender", an anti-Trump monologue for which the president tweeted his dislike, saying it "was a TOTAL BOMB and was forced to close", even though it grossed over $4 million dollars and played its scheduled 12 weeks in full.
8. Professional Canadian Snowboarder, who in 2011 was the first person ever to land a Backside Triple Cork 1440.

Answer: Mark McMorris

No, I had no idea what a Backside Triple Cork 1440 was either, but I recommend watching the video as it is mighty impressive. McMorris is a highly talented boarder, who seems to have no concept of the phrase "enough is enough". In 2017, he hit a tree, resulting in near-fatal injuries including a fractured jaw, a fractured left arm, a ruptured spleen, a pelvic fracture, rib fractures and a collapsed left lung. Undeterred, he fought back to recovery and less than a year later, competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, winning a bronze medal in the slopestyle event.
9. Author of the children's novel, later made into a movie by Steven Spielberg, "War Horse" (1982).

Answer: Michael Morpurgo

Morpurgo was appointed Children's Laureate between 2003 and 2005 and has written several award winning children's books including "The Wreck Of The Zanzibar" (1995), "Kensuke's Kingdom" (1999) and "Private Peaceful" (2003) but his best known work, thanks to the Spielberg movie in 2011, is "War Horse", which never won an award, although it was runner-up for the Whitbread Book Award in 1982. Morpurgo himself won a huge honour in 2018, when he was knighted in the New Year Honours list.
10. Prime Minister of Italy between 2011 and 2013.

Answer: Mario Monti

Following Silvio Berlusconi's resignation in 2011, Monti was asked by President Giorgio Napolitano to form a new government, despite him never having been an elected politician, instead having a career in economics. As well as prime minister, he also appointed himself as Minister of Economy and Finances and announced strict austerity measures, which included reforming pensions and real estate taxes as well as giving up his own salary.
