Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which UK comedian and classically trained musician starred as Manny Bianco in the TV show, "Black Books"?

Answer: Bill Bailey

Bailey is also well known for his TV appearances on quiz shows such as "QI", "Have I Got News For You" and also music quiz "Never Mind The Buzzcocks", on which he may have had a slight advantage over other guests as he has perfect pitch, an ability he shares with Mozart and one which only approximately one in 10,000 people have. "Black Books" was written by Bailey's co star in the show, Dylan Moran and ran for three seasons between 2000 and 2004.

It was a very funny show about book shop owner Bernard Black (Moran) who would rather drink wine and read than deal with members of the public.
2. Which booming voiced Shakespearean actor has played Caesar Augustus in the TV drama "I, Claudius" (1976), Robin Hood's father in the film "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (1991) and in 2005, aged 69 became the oldest person to reach magnetic North Pole on foot?

Answer: Brian Blessed

Among his many acting roles, which in addition to the ones mentioned, include playing both Old Deuteronomy and Bustopher Jones, in the original 1981 West End production of "Cats" and playing Boss Nass in "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" (1999).

He also delivered one of the most quoted movie lines ever when he exclaimed "Gordon's Alive!" while playing Prince Vultan in 1980s "Flash Gordon" and is fondly remembered for his role as the completely mad Richard IV in "The Black Adder" (1983).

He is also the ultimate adventurer, having attempted to climb Mount Everest three times, successfully scaled Mount Aconcagua in Argentina, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, undergone intensive training at the Space Centre in Moscow and once helped a lady deliver her baby by biting through the umbilical cord with his teeth.
3. Which baseball star left the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1993, to sign for the San Francisco Giants, the team his father had played for from 1968 to 1974?

Answer: Barry Bonds

Bonds' free agent deal with the Giants was worth an amazing $43.75 million over six years, which was a record at the time. He stayed with the Giants until his retirement in 2007, aged 43. On his retirement, he was the only person in the history of the sport to have hit over 500 home runs and stolen over 500 bases, and in 2018, the Giants retired his number 25 jersey.

His father Bobby, so also a B.B. initials member, played for several clubs after leaving the Giants, including the California Angels, Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs.
4. In 1992, who became the first female Speaker of the House of Commons in the UK?

Answer: Betty Boothroyd

She resigned from politics in 2000 to take up her position in the House of Lords as Baroness Boothroyd, of Sandwell in the County of West Midlands and on her retirement, then Prime Minister and Labour leader Tony Blair called her "a national institution", while on the the other side of the political divide, former Prime Minister, the Conservative, John Major called her "an outstanding Speaker".
5. Star of the 1956 film, "And God Created Woman", which French actress was the original "sex kitten"?

Answer: Brigitte Bardot

In the movie, 22 year old Bardot played the part of an 18 year old orphan who seems to spend most of her time either naked or scantily dressed. She manages to play her husband, his brother and a millionaire property developer against each other before realising where her love lies. Bardot retired from acting in 1973 and became an animal rights activist who is often outspoken.

She has hit the headlines in her native France and also in the rest of Europe for criticising French immigration policy and speaking out against Islam in France, as well as being fined several times by French courts for inciting racial hatred with her anti Islamic views.
6. In 1985, who became the first unseeded player ever to win the men's singles event at the Wimbledon tennis tournament?

Answer: Boris Becker

Not only was Becker the first unseeded champion, he was also the first German champion when he beat South Africa's Kevin Curren in four sets and he was only 17 years old making him the youngest ever male Grand Slam singles champion at the time. The following year, he successfully defended his title, beating world number one Ivan Lendl in the final in straight sets. During his career, Becker also won the Australian Open twice, the French Open three times, the US Open and managed another Wimbledon win in 1989.
7. In 1990, who became the first Prime Minister in the world to give birth during her time in office?

After meeting Afghan President Hamid Karzai in 2007, Bhutto was waving to her supporters from her car, when a man opened fire and detonated a suicide bomb containing ball bearings, killing her and 23 others.

Bill Barilko was the man immortalised in the 1992 song "Fifty Mission Cap" by The Tragically Hip. He scored the winning goal in overtime and then disappeared while on a post season fishing trip, with his body not being found until 1962. Answer: Billy Bremner

Hero of my childhood, along with Johnny Giles, Bremner bossed the midfield at Leeds with his clever tactical play, well timed tackles, incredible team spirit and willingness to lay his body on the line for the team every week. His famous motto was "side before self, everytime" and he never let the team down.

He played for Leeds for 16 years, from 1960 to 1976 and also won 54 Scottish caps during this time.
