Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Played writer Hank Moody in TV show "Californication"

Answer: David Duchovny

Duchovny hit the big time as Fox Mulder in TV show "The X-Files", which ran from 1993 to 2001, before returning in 2016 after a 15 year hiatus. Duchovny's portrayal of a womanising, alcoholic, drug taking author with writer's block in "Californication" won him a Best Actor Golden Globe in 2008.
2. Author of the novel "Captain Singleton" in 1720

Answer: Daniel Defoe

Defoe is of course much better known for his novel from 1719, "Robinson Crusoe", which is cited by many as the first English novel. "Captain Singleton" is believed to be based on the adventures of Henry Every, an English pirate who was notorious in the Atlantic and Indian oceans in the 1690s.
3. Known as "The King of the Surf Guitar"

Answer: Dick Dale

Dale was very popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s before the "British Invasion" with bands such as the Beatles caused him to fade from public view. He made a triumphant return in 1994 though, when Quentin Tarantino used the track "Misirlou" over the opening credits to the film, "Pulp Fiction".
4. Canadian star of "Lady On A Train" (1945)

Answer: Deanna Durbin

Aged 17, in 1938, Winnipeg native Durbin was awarded the "Juvenile Oscar", an honorary Oscar, which used to be given to exceptionally talented performers under the age of 18. Durbin's role in "Three Smart Girls" (1936) is often said to have saved the studio Universal Pictures from bankruptcy following financial problems caused by the Depression and their big budget remake of "Show Boat" (1936).
5. English footballer, won the Premier League with Manchester United and Scottish Premier League with Celtic

Answer: Dion Dublin

Dion Dublin started his career as a defender at Norwich City, but when Cambridge United bought him in 1988, they transformed him into a centre forward and quite a prolific one too. He is best remembered for his long spells at Coventry City (1994-98) and Aston Villa (1998-2004) and since retirement has invented a percussion instrument called The Dube, which is gaining in popularity, especially at acoustic gigs.
6. Jamaican singer and front man for the Aces

Answer: Desmond Dekker

Desmond Dekker is one of the most influential reggae and ska musicians with records such as "Get Up Edina" (1965), "007 (Shanty Town)" (1967) and "It Mek" (1968) under his belt. Add to those the much loved hits such as "Israelites" (1968), "You Can Get It If You Really Want" (1970) and "Sing A Little Song" (1975) and you have an artist loved by fans and much respected by peers.
7. Real name of former Marillion vocalist, Fish

Answer: Derek Dick

Ex lumberjack and very talented lyricist, Dick acquired his nickname and later his stage name by way of an old landlady with whom he lodged. In addition to charging for a room and meals, she would charge extra for having a bath, leading to Dick's habit of taking a bath, stocked up with beer, snacks, cigarettes and reading material in order to get his money's worth.

It didn't take long for friends to decide he spent more time in the water than a fish.
8. Footballer played 399 games for Everton and died at the club's ground

Answer: Dixie Dean

William "Dixie" Dean was a true footballing legend. In his 399 games for Everton, he scored an incredible 349 goals, including 60 in one season (1927-28), the first player to ever do so and in addition to this, he played for England 16 times and scored 18 goals.

In 1980, aged 73, Dean was at Everton's Goodison Park to watch them take on city rivals Liverpool, when he suffered a heart attack and died. There is now a statue of Dean outside Goodison and an annual award, known as the Dixie Dean award is given each year, to the best player on Merseyside.
9. First African-American to be nominated for the Best Actress Oscar

Answer: Dorothy Dandridge

Dandridge won her nomination for her role as the title character in "Carmen Jones" (1954), playing opposite Harry Belafonte. "Carmen Jones" was based on Bizet's opera, "Carmen" and unfortunately Dandridge lost out in the Best Actress category to Grace Kelly for her part in "The Country Girl" (1954).

The first African-American to win the Best Actress Oscar was Halle Berry in 2001 for "Monster's Ball".
10. Recorded "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer" in 1961

Answer: Dion DiMucci

Dion as he is better known, was far more popular in the USA than the UK, where the two tracks in the question were his only major hits. In his native USA however, he managed 11 top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between "A Teenager In Love" in 1959 and "Abraham, Martin And John" in 1968.
