Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jersey-born 19th century socialite, remembered for her dalliances with the Prince of Wales and Prince Louis of Battenberg.

Answer: Lillie Langtry

Almost a Kardashian of her day, Lillie Langtry attracted attention for her looks and attendance at social occasions for several years before turning her hand to acting. Through her three year affair with Albert, Prince of Wales, she met many members of the royal family including his wife, Princess Alexandra of Denmark and his mother, Queen Victoria, both of whom acknowledged Lillie as Albert's mistress.

After their affair was over, the Prince of Wales continued to support her by attending many of her plays as she embarked on her new career as an actress, in which she managed to play prime roles such as Rosalind in "As You Like It" and Lady Macbeth in "Macbeth". Lillie died in 1929 in Monaco and is buried in her home town on Jersey.
2. Moroccan-American novelist. Winner of an American Book Award for "The Moor's Account" (2014).

Answer: Laila Lalami

Lalami attracted attention right from the start with her debut novel, "Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits" in 2005, and praise for her style of writing increased with the publication of her second book, 2009s "Secret Son". "The Moor's Account" (2014) was eagerly awaited and on its release was nominated for several literary prizes including a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Man Booker Prize. Well worth a read, it recounts the tale of a 16th century Moroccan slave who goes on to be the first black explorer of America, and is based on the life of Esteban the Moor, who lived from 1501 to 1539.
3. Actress, nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for "You Can Count On Me" (2001) and "The Savages" (2008).

Answer: Laura Linney

Perhaps not as well known as the likes of Jennifer Aniston or Julia Roberts, but Linney's body of work is very impressive, having had a minor role in "Dave" (1993) opposite Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver before starring in several box office hits. These include, "Congo" (1995), "Primal Fear" (1996) and "The Truman Show" (1998) before earning her first Oscar nomination for "You Can Count On Me" in 2000. Movies such as "Mystic River" (2003) and "Love Actually" (2003) followed, as did a second Oscar nomination for "Kinsey" (2004).

Although she failed, once again to win the Oscar, the good roles continued to come, with parts in movies such as "The Squid and the Whale" (2005), "Mr. Holmes" (2015) and "Sully" (2016) as well as "Savages" (2007) for which she received a third Oscar nomination, this time losing out to Marion Cotillard as she had to Cate Blanchett in 2004 and Julia Roberts in 2000.
4. Former BBC newsreader, murdered in Trinidad in 2001.

Answer: Lynette Lithgow

Lynette Lithgow was born in Trinidad and started her news reading career with Radio Television Brunei before moving to UK and becoming a news anchor on BBC World and on BBC1. She is well remembered for being the first BBC newsreader to announce the resignation of Margaret Thatcher in 1990 and worked for the company until 1996, when she moved to Singapore to work for CNBC Asia.

In 2001, whilst on holiday in Trinidad, she was brutally murdered along with Maggie Lee, her elderly mother and John Cropper, her brother-in-law during a robbery carried out by Mrs Lee's great-grandson.
5. American actress, played O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004).

Answer: Lucy Liu

In the "Kill Bill" movies, O-Ren Ishii, also known as Cottonmouth, is the first member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad on the hit list of The Bride. A classic Tarantino scene involving The Bride, O-Ren Ishii and her private army, known as the Crazy 88 ends with the death of one of the main combatants, her final words being the unforgettable, "That really was a Hattori Hanzo sword." Liu, as well as being a talented actress, has also turned her hand to directing with episodes of TV shows such as "Elementary" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and is an in demand artist, having staged several exhibitions under her Chinese name of Yu Ling.
6. Australian athlete, winner of three gold medals at the 2000 Paralympic Games.

Answer: Lisa Llorens

There is no stopping Lisa "The Cheetah" Llorens as she competes in the athletes with autism class. She took gold in Sydney for the 200 metres, high jump and long jump events as well as collecting a silver medal for the 100 metres. Quite a nice addition to her medal haul from the 1996 Atlanta Games, where she bagged a bronze in the 200 metres and gold in the long jump.
7. Four time Grammy Award winner with her band TLC. Died in a car accident in 2002.

Answer: Lisa Lopes

The music world lost a true talent when Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in 2002. As a member of TLC, with Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, she was responsible for recordings such as "Waterfalls" (1995), "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty" (both 1999), while as a solo artist she appeared on Billboard Hot 100 top ten hits by Lil' Kim and Donell Jones as well as releasing a solo album, "Supernova" the year before her death.
8. Formula One driver from 1974 to 1976 for March, Williams and RAM.

Answer: Lella Lombardi

Prior to Lombardi making her Formula One debut in 1974, there had been only one other female F1 driver, fellow Italian, Maria Teresa de Filippis who raced for Maserati in 1958. Lombardi made history though as the first female to finish a race in the top six, and therefore score World Championship points.

She managed this at the Spanish Grand Prix of 1975, which was run over a shortened distance after the deaths of five spectators. The race was halted on lap 29 after accident debris from Rolf Stommelen's car had flown into the spectator area and half points were awarded, giving Lombardi that all important half point to make history.
9. Appointed as Attorney General of the United States by President Obama in 2015.

Answer: Loretta Lynch

Lawyer Lynch was appointed by President Clinton in 1999 as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and oversaw the prosecution of police officer Justin Volpe for the torture of a suspect, resulting in a 30 year sentence for Vople. She returned to private law work in 2001, before President Obama nominated her for the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York position once again, where she once again oversaw a case involving police brutality, which although no prosecutions were made, resulted in a payout of $5.9 million to the deceased man's family from the City of New York.

In 2014, Obama nominated her for the position of Attorney General of the United States, and she became the first African American woman, and second female to hold this post, a position she held until January 20, 2017, when Donald Trump became President.
10. Original member of Destiny's Child alongside Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland and LaTavia Roberson.

Answer: LeToya Luckett

Luckett was a founding member of Destiny's Child and was a part of the band when they had the Billboard Hot 100 number one single, "Bills, Bills, Bills" in 1999 as well as the Billboard Hot 100 top five hit "No, No, No" (1997). She was also one of the songwriters for the double Grammy award winning sing "Say My Name" (1991) which was also a Billboard Hot 100 number one for the band, although by the time that record was released, both Luckett and Roberson had left the group.

As a solo artist, Luckett continued the run of success with her debut album, "LeToya" (2006) hitting the top spot on the Billboard 200 and the follow up, 2009s "Lady Love" reaching number 12 on that chart.
