Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ABI', which one was a wife of David?

Answer: Abigail

Abigail is the correct answer. According to Scripture, she was "intelligent and beautiful" and was originally married to Nabal, described as "surly and mean". After Nabal was struck dead in a case of divine retribution, Abigail became David's wife.

For further details, see 1 Samuel 25:2-42.
2. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ABI', which one was the grandson of Solomon and king of Judah?

Answer: Abijah

Abijah is the correct answer. He was the son of Rehoboam and grandson of Solomon, serving as king of Judah. He became king upon the death of his father and reigned for three years.

There are other people in the Old Testament named Abijah. They include a son of Jeroboam; the second son of Samuel; a descendant of Eleazar, the son of Aaron as well as the daughter of Hezekiah.
3. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ABI', which one was a king who was killed when an unnamed woman who was trapped in a tower dropped a millstone on his head?

Answer: Abimelech

Abimelech met his demise when an unnamed woman trapped in a tower with a number of other people dropped a millstone on his head. Judges 9 provides an account of the incident.

Abimelech, the son of Gideon, was as wicked as they come. According to Scripture, he became the ruler over Shechem when he killed no less than sixty-eight half brothers. Gideon had seventy sons and the only one Abimlech didn't manage to kill was Jotham.

Judges 9 goes on to tell of Abimelech being involved in a military strike against Thebez when a number of men and women took refuge in a tower. The evil and vile Abimelech then ordered the tower to be set on fire to kill all the people.

Verse 53 tells of an unnamed woman in the tower dropping a millstone on Abimelech's head.

The passage goes on to tell of Abimelech calling on his armorbearer to kill him so no one could say "a woman killed him." After the armorbearer killed Abimelech by thrusting his sword through him, Scripture states the people of Israel departed to their homes.

(In the NIV, Abimelech's name appears as Abimelek.)
4. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ABI', which one was the winner of a beauty contest and ended up caring for an elderly king?

Answer: Abishag

Abishag was selected after what was basically a beauty contest to find a young woman to care for David when he was elderly and frail. According to 1 Kings 1:3, Abishag was "young and beautiful", and she was found after an extensive search was conducted by David's officials. Part of Abishag's duties involved sleeping with David to keep him warm.

However, 1 King 1:4 states the king did not have sexual relations with her.
5. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ABI', which one accompanied David on a late-night foray into the camp of King Saul?

Answer: Abishai

Abishai, a nephew of David, is the correct answer. Scripture tells of David and Abishai entering the camp of King Saul late at night while Saul and his soldiers were sleeping.

The entry into the camp took place during a time when Saul was spending all his energy trying to kill David. Although he could've easily struck Saul dead, David opted not to take any action. This even though Abishai urged him to end Saul's life.

Abishai was the oldest son of Zeruiah, a sister of David.

For details about Abishai and David sneaking into Saul's camp late at night, see 1 Samuel 26:5-12.
6. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ABI', which one was the father of Barak, the leader of Israel's army in the days of Deborah?

Answer: Abinoam

Abinoam was the father of Barak, the leader of Israel's army in the days of Deborah. However, not much is known about Abinoam as his name is mentioned in passing reference. Using the NKJV, his name appears four different times in the book of Judges and on each occasion it makes mention Barak was his son.

For the record, Abinoam's name appears in Judges 4:6, 4:12, 5:1 and 5:12 in the NKJV. According to Wikipedia, the name means "the (divine) father is pleasantness."
7. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ABI', which one was a high priest who was removed from office by Solomon?

Answer: Abiathar

1 Kings 2:27 tells of Solomon removing Abiathar as high priest of Israel. According to Scripture, Abiather took part in a failed attempt to make Adonijah king of Israel in stead of Solomon. After being deposed as high priest, Abiathar returned to Anathoth, his hometown.

1 Kings 2 also tells of Solomon ordering the execution of Adonijah and Joab, another supporter of Adonijah as king.

The Abiathar incident is the only historical instance of the removal of a high priest in Biblical times in Israel, according to the website Christiananswers.net.
8. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ABI', which one was a son of Aaron who was struck dead in a case of divine retribution?

Answer: Abihu

Abihu and his brother Nadab were both struck dead in a case of divine retribution. The brothers were the sons of Aaron and nephews of Moses, and both served as priests while the Israelites were on a forty-year-long journey from Egypt to Canaan, known as the Promised Land.

According to Scripture, Abihu and Nadab were "devoured" by fire from the LORD for offering "profane fire" in the tabernacle of meeting. Meanwhile, the NIV states the two brothers were struck dead because they offered "unauthorized fire".

Two younger brothers of the men, Eleazar and Ithamar, replaced them as priests.

For details, see Leviticus 10:1-7.
9. Fill in the missing word from John 15:5 in the NKJV in which Jesus is instructing His Twelve Disciples at the Last Supper: "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who ________ in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." (Remember all answers start with the letters 'ABI'.)

Answer: abides

The missing word from John 16:5 in the NKJV is 'abides'. The verse is one of my favorites in the Bible.

Jesus described Himself as the Vine to the Twelve Disciples at the Last Supper, just before His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane followed by His crucifixion.

Taking the verse at its literal meaning, a follower of Christ cannot accomplish anything of permanent value unless they 'abide' in Him. That's something for believers to think about.

The KJV uses the word 'abideth' in John 15:5 while the NIV states, "if you remain in" Christ you will bear much fruit.
10. Fill in the missing word from 1 Peter 4:11 in the NKJV: "If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the _________ which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever." (Remember all answers start with the letters 'ABI'.)

Answer: ability

The missing word from 1 Peter 4:11 in the NKJV is 'ability'. The epistle of 1 Peter, along with 2 Peter, was written by Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples. Both are relatively small books, with 1 Peter consisting of five chapters and 2 Peter consisting of three chapters.

While the KJV also uses the word 'ability' for 1 Peter 4:11, the NIV uses different wording. The NIV states while serving God, believers "should do so with the strength God provides."
