Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'HAM', which one had a diabolical plan to commit mass genocide against all the Jews in Persia?

Answer: Haman

If Haman had his way, all the Jews in the vast Persian empire ruled by King Ahasuerus would have been exterminated. However, Scripture tells of Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai joining forces to thwart Haman from carrying out his diabolical scheme.

The story of Esther and Mordecai saving the lives of the Jews in Persia is recounted in the book of Esther. According to Esther 1:1, the Persian empire at the time consisted of one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, stretching from India in the east to Ethiopia in the west.
2. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'HAM', which one was a son of Noah?

Answer: Ham

Ham was the second oldest of three sons of Noah and his unnamed wife. Noah's two other sons, according to Genesis 6:10, were Shem and Japheth. Genesis 10:6 states Ham and his unnamed wife had four sons -- Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.

Genesis 9:18-28 tells of Noah announcing a curse on Ham's son Canaan. The curse was proclaimed after Ham saw his father Noah drunk and naked in his tent.
3. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'HAM', which one was the father of Shechem, the man who defiled Dinah, as per Genesis 34:2?

Answer: Hamor

Hamor is the correct answer. Although Hamor's name appears thirteen times in the NKJV, not much is known about him as he is largely mentioned in passing reference. However, Genesis 33:18-20 tells of Jacob buying a parcel of land in Canaan from Hamor for "one hundred pieces of money." (In the NIV, it states Jacob paid "one hundred pieces of silver" for the land.)

After pitching his tent on the newly-acquired land, Jacob called it "El Elohe Israel." Notes in the NKJV Study Bible states the name Jacob gave the land translates as "The God of Israel."

Shortly after the land was purchased, Scripture states Hamor's son Shechem defiled Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah.
4. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'HAM', which one, according to Genesis 46:12, was of the tribe of Judah and one of seventy people who migrated with Jacob to Egypt?

Answer: Hamul

Hamul was one of seventy people who migrated with Jacob to Egypt during a time of severe famine, according to Scripture. Genesis 46:12 states Hamul was the son of Perez and the grandson of Judah. The verse also states Hamul had a brother -- Hezron.

I find it fascinating the seventy people who migrated to Egypt grew over the centuries to become an extremely large number. Exodus 12:37 tells of "about six hundred thousand men on foot" leaving Egypt, not counting women and children.
5. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'HAM', which one, according to Esther 3:1, was the father of Haman?

Answer: Hammedatha

Hammedatha was the father of Haman, the man who had a diabolical plan to kill all the Jews in the Persian empire ruled by King Ahasuerus. Hammedatha's name is mentioned five different times in the NKJV, but each time it simply states he was the father of Haman.

In each instance he is described as an Agagite. In other words, he was a descendant of Agag, king of the Amalekites, as per 1 Samuel 15:32.
6. Fill in the missing word from Judges 4:21 in the NKJV: "Then Jael, Heber's wife, took a tent peg and took a ________ in her hand, and went softly to him [Sisera] and drove the peg into his temple, and it went down into the ground; for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died." (Remember all answers start with the letters 'HAM'.)

Answer: hammer

The missing word from Judges 4:21 in the NKJV is 'hammer'. The verse is part of a passage telling of the gruesome death of Sisera, commander of the Canaanite army. The passage tells of the Israelite army, led by Barak and Deborah, soundly trouncing the Canaanite army in battle with Sisera fleeing for this life.

Sisera made a fatal mistake when he asked Jael, the wife of Heber, if he could rest in her tent. While Sisera was in a deep sleep, Scripture states Jael took a hammer and drove a tent peg through his head and into the ground.
7. Fill in the missing word from Joshua 11:9 in the NKJV: "So Joshua did to them as the LORD had told him: he __________ their horses and burned their chariots with fire." (Remember all answers start with the letters 'HAM'.)

Answer: hamstrung

The missing word from Joshua 11:9 in the NKJV is 'hamstrung'. The verse is part of a passage telling of the Israelites scoring major military victories over the people of northern Canaan. The passage makes it clear the victories were the result of divine intervention. For example, in Joshua 11:6, God is quoted as telling Joshua prior to the battle: "Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow about this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."

While the NIV also uses the word 'hamstrung'in Joshua 11:9, the KJV states Joshua "houghed their horses."
8. Fill in the missing word from 1 Kings 10:16 in the NKJV: "And King Solomon made two hundred large shields of ___________ gold; six hundred shekels of gold went into each shield." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'HAM'.)

Answer: hammered

The missing word in 1 Kings 10:16 in the NKJV is 'hammered' The verse is part of a passage telling of the stupendous wealth of Solomon. The time of Solomon`s reign is often referred to as the golden era in Israel's history. 1 Kings 10:27 sums up things this way: "The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedar trees as abundant as the sycamores which are in the lowland."

While the NIV also uses 'hammered gold' in 1 Kings 10:16, the KJV uses the term 'beaten gold'.
9. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'HAM', which one was the mother of Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, per as per 2 Kings 23:21?

Answer: Hamutal

Hamutal was the mother of Zedekiah, the last king of Judah. She was the wife of King Josiah. According to 2 Kings 24:18, Hamutal was the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. Her father is not to be confused with Jeremiah the prophet.

Zedekiah`s reign was brutally ended when the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem and took the inhabitants into captivity.
10. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'HAM', which one was a nation bordering Israel, as per Zechariah 9:2 in the NKJV?

Answer: Hamath

Hamath is the correct answer. Using the NKJV, Hamath appears no less than thirty-six times in the Old Testament, but is not mentioned in the New Testament.

In the NIV, as well as a number of other Bible versions, Hamath is referred to as Lebo Hamath.

Numbers 34:7-9, Hamath is mentioned in a statement by God about Israel's northern border. The verses in the NKJV state: "And this shall be your northern border: From the Great Sea you shall mark out your border line to Mount Hor; from Mount Hor you shall mark out your border to the entrance of Hamath; then the direction of the border shall be toward Zedad; the border shall proceed to Ziphron, and it shall end at Hazar Enan. This shall be your northern border."
