Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'PHI', which one recruited Nathanael to become a member of the original Twelve Disciples?

Answer: Philip

Philip recruited Nathanael to become a member of the original Twelve Disciples, as per John 1:45. According to the previous verse, Philip had just become one of the Twelve Disciples.

Similar to Peter and Andrew, Philip was from Bethsaida, a fishing community on the northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee.

I find it fascinating that whenever a list of the names of Twelve Disciples appears in Scripture, Philip's name is always fifth. (See Matthew 10:2-4; Mark 3:16-19, Luke 5:14-16 and Acts 1:13.)
2. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'PHI', which one lived in Colossae, where members of the early church met to worship at his house?

Answer: Philemon

Philemon, the owner of the run-away slave Onesimus, lived in Colossae where members of the early church met to worship at his house. Colossae was a city in Phrygia, part of present-day Turkey, according to the ATS Bible Dictionary.

It is believed Philemon's wife was Apphia and their son was Archippus. This belief is based on Philemon 1:1-2 when Paul states in the salutation in the NKJV, "To Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer, to the beloved Apphia, Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house."

The letter to Philemon was written by Paul when he was imprisoned in Rome. Two major themes of the letter are forgiveness and reconciliation.
3. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'PHI', which one was a corrupt son of Eli, the high priest and judge of Israel?

Answer: Phinehas

Phinehas and his brother Hophni were the sons of Eli, the high priest and judge of Israel. However, they were crooked and had their lives ended in a case of divine retribution.

1 Samuel 2 tells of Phinehas and Hophni serving as priests, but refusing to obey sacred protocol when people came to offer a sacrifice. Things were so bad, the two men were having sexual relations with women "at the door of the tabernacle of meeting."

Scripture goes on to tell of the Philistines capturing the ark of God and Hophni and Phinehas being struck dead in battle. Their deaths were fulfillment of a prophecy by an unnamed man of God, who told Eli his two sons would be killed through divine retribution.
4. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'PHI', which one was condemned by Paul in 2 Timothy 2:17?

Answer: Philetus

Philetus and Hymenaeus were condemned by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, in 2 Timothy 2:17. The verse warns Timothy of the false teachings of the Philetus and Hymenaeus and warns, "their message will spread like cancer." According to Verse 18, the two men preached there would not be any bodily resurrection.

Philetus' name appears in only 2 Timothy 2:17 in the Bible. However, the name Hymenaeus also appears in 1 Timothy 1:20. In the verse, Paul writes he delivered Hymenaeus and Alexander to Satan so "they may learn not to blaspheme."
5. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'PHI', which one was a member of the early church at Rome, as per Romans 16:15?

Answer: Philologus

Philologus was a worker in the early church at Rome. In Romans 16:15, Paul extends greetings to Philologus as well as "Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them."

With Philologus' name coupled with Julia, it is believe she was either his wife or sister.

According to Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary, Philologus means "a lover of letters, or of the word."

His name appears nowhere else in Scripture.
6. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'PHI', which one was an evangelist who converted the Ethiopian eunuch?

Answer: Philip

Philip the evangelist is the correct answer, as per Acts 8:26-40. He is not to be confused with Philip, one of the original Twelve Disciples. To differentiate between the two men called Philip, the one who converted the Ethiopian eunuch is often called Philip the evangelist.

Philip the evangelist was one of seven Grecian Jews selected to serve widows in their community, as per Acts 6:1-7. In addition to Philip, Scripture tells of Stephen, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas being selected to serve the widows.
7. Fill in the missing word from Colossians 2:8 in the NKJV: "Beware lest anyone cheat you through ___________ and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ." (Remember, all answers start with the letters PHI.)

Answer: philosophy

The missing word from Colossians 2:8 in the NKJV is 'philosophy'. (The word philosophy is also used in the NIV and the KJV.) Colossians was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, to members of the early church who lived in Colossae, a city in present day Turkey.

It is believed Philemon, owner of the run-away slave Onesimus, lived in Colossae with members of the early church meeting in his house to worship.
8. What was the name of one of the seven churches the book of Revelations is addressed to? (Remember, all answers start with the letters PHI.)

Answer: Philadelphia

Philadelphia is mentioned in Revelation 1:11 and 3:7. John, the writer of Revelation, describes Philadelphia as the faithful church.

The six other churches mentioned in Revealation include Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis and Laodicea. All the churches, including Philadelphia, were in Asia Minor, part of present day Turkey.
9. What was the name of the community where Paul and Silas were jailed and seized the opportunity to convert the jailer? (Remember, all answers start with the letters PHI.)

Answer: Philippi

Philippi is the name of the Greek community Paul and Silas ended up being jailed. Although they were severely beaten, Acts 16:25-34 tells of the two men praying and singing hymns at midnight when an earthquake happened. Although all the other prisoners used the occasion to escape, Paul and Silas stayed out and seized the occasion to convert the unnamed Philippian jailer.

It was also in Philippi that Paul converted Lydia, a woman who sold purple cloth.
10. What was the nationality of the people who were arch-enemies of the Israelites, especially in the time of David? (Remember, all answers start with the letters PHI.)

Answer: Philistines

The Philistines were arch-enemies of the Israelites, as Scripture tells of the two nations battling each other on a number of occasions. One of the many battles featured David slaying the Philistine behemoth Goliath with a sling shot, as per 1 Samuel 17. Another well known Philistine character in the Bible is Delilah, the woman who betrayed Samson.
