Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ELI', which one was so depressed he called upon God to end his life?

Answer: Elijah

According to 1 Kings 19:4, Elijah was so depressed he prayed to God his life would be ended. The verse in the NKJV states: "It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!"

Amazingly, Elijah made the request after his miraculous victory over four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal in a showdown on Mount Carmel. According to Scripture, Jezebel, the wicked wife of King Ahab, was livid following Elijah's victory and wanted the prophet of God dead. As a result, Elijah went into hiding and then, in a fit of despair, calling on God to end his life.

Scripture goes on to tell of Elijah surviving his ordeal and Ahab and Jezebel both being killed.
2. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ELI', which one was definitely bald?

Answer: Elisha

According to Scripture, Elisha was bald. In fact, he's the only person in the entire Christian Bible identified as being bald. 2 Kings 2:23-24 tells of a group of youths ridiculing Elisha because of his baldness. The insults of the youths would have a deadly ramification. Scripture states Elisha put a curse on the youths and two female bears mauled no less than forty-two of them.
3. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ELI', which one was the father-in-law of Ruth and Orpah?

Answer: Elimelech

Elimelech was the husband of Naomi, and their two sons Mahlon and Chilion were married to two women from Moab. The women's names were Ruth and Orpah. However, Elimelech and his two sons died and their three wives became widows.

The book of Ruth goes on to tell of the romance between Ruth, a Gentile, and Boaz, a Jew. Their romance blossomed into marriage and they became the parents of Obed, the grandfather of David.

In the NIV, Elimelech is known as Elimelek.
4. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ELI', which one was the son of Moses and Zipporah?

Answer: Eliezer

Eliezer was the son of Moses and Zipporah, as per Exodus 18:4. According to notes in the NKJV STudy Bible, Eliezer means 'My God is Help'. He was the second son of Moses and Zipporah. Their first son was Gershom.

According to Scripture, Zipporah was the daughter of Jethro, also known as Reuel.
5. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ELI', which one was the oldest brother of David?

Answer: Eliab

According to 1 Samuel 17:13, Eliab was the oldest son of Jesse, making him David's oldest brother. Although Eliab and David were brothers, there was friction between the two.

For example, 1 Samuel 17:28 tells of Eliab being extremely condescending to David just prior to his famous battle with Goliath. The verse in the NKJV quotes Eliab as telling David: "Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle."

In response, David said, "What have I done now? Is there not a cause?"

The chapter goes on to tell of David using a slingshot to slay the Philistine giant Goliath.
6. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ELI', which one was a key official for King Hezekiah?

Answer: Eliakim

Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, was an official in Hezekiah's government and was responsible for overseeing the king's household, as per 2 Kings 18:37. Scripture indicates he often worked closely with Shebna and Joah. Shebna was the scribe and Joah the recorder for Hezekiah.
7. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ELI', which one was a high priest in the days of Nehemiah and involved in re-building the wall around Jerusalem?

Answer: Eliashib

Eliashib was the high priest when the wall around Jerusalem was re-built by the Jews who had been exiled to Babylon, as per Nehemiah 3:1. According to the verse, Eliashib and the other priests built the Sheep Gate and after consecrating it, hung its doors.

He is also mentioned in Nehemiah 3:20-21, 13:28 and Nehemiah 12:10 and 22.
8. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ELI', which one was a son of David?

Answer: Eliphelet

According to 1 Chronicles 3:8, Eliphelet was a son of David and one of thirteen sons born to David during his reign in Jerusalem. Meanwhile, 1 Chronicles 1-3 tells of six sons born to David when he reigned as king in Hebron.

However, little is known about Eliphelet as he is mentioned in passing reference.
9. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ELI', which one was a leader from the tribe of Reuben?

Answer: Elizur

Elizur is the correct answer. Numbers 10:18 states Elizur was the son of Shedeur and the leader of the army of the Reubenites. According to Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary, Elizur means "God is my strength; my rock; rock of God".

Although Elizur's name appears five different times in the NKJV, little is known about him because in each mention it simply states he was the son of Shedeur and a leader of the tribe of Reuben.
10. What was the name of the New Testament woman who gave birth to John the Baptist? (Remember all answers start with the letters 'ELI".)

Answer: Elizabeth

Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist. According to Scripture she had been unable to conceive and was elderly when she miraculously gave birth to her son.

John the Baptist's imminent birth was announced by the angel Gabriel to Zecharias, the elderly husband of Elizabeth. For more details, see Luke 1.

(In the NKJV and the NIV her name appears as Elizabeth. However, in the KJV as well as some other Bible versions, her name appears as Elisabeth.)
