Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Did you know: On a certain occasion Jesus actually COOKED for his disciples? That's right. This occurred at a time when he had instructed them to fish from the right-hand side of their ship and they had caught a precise number of large fish. How many fish does John 21:1-14 state that they caught, and which of the occasions that Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection was this?

Answer: 153 and the third time Jesus appeared

Read the account given in the King James Version of John 21:1-14 for yourself:

"After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.

"As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.

"Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead."

2. Jesus performed many miracles as recorded in the King James version of the Bible. Instances of Him healing, delivering and resurrecting abound throughout the Book. However, His first recorded miracle, found in the second chapter of John, takes place in Cana. Can you identify it?

Answer: Jesus turned six large containers of water into wine.

Turning the water into wine is the first recorded miracle in the Bible. Several commentaries suggest one of the reasons Jesus did this, other than the fact that the wine was running low, was to provide a sign for His disciples. At this point Jesus' followers had seen no sign from Him and were going on faith. Jesus may have done this to strengthen their faith.

3. Jesus raised three people from the death during his ministry. Can you place them in order beginning with who had been dead the shortest amount of time?

Answer: Ruler's daughter, Widow's son, Lazarus

The story of the Ruler's daughter is found in Matthew 9:18-26, Mark 5:21-43 and Luke 8:40-56. According to both Luke and Mark her father, the Ruler, tells Jesus that his daughter is DYING. (In Matthew's account the Ruler states that she has just died.)
The story of the Widow's son can be found in Luke 7:11-17. Here Jesus and his disciples come across the crowd carrying the young man as the body is being carried out of town, presumably to his funeral.
Lastly the story of Lazarus can be found in John 11:1-44. Here Lazarus has already been dead for four days and is long buried. His sister Martha even states that there will be a foul stench if the stone is rolled away.

4. Scripture tells of Jesus feeding a multitude of people on two different occasions with a pittance of food. The first time, He fed a multitude of people with five loaves and two small fish and the second time, another large number of people with seven loaves and a "few small fish." According to Scripture, what was the total number of men he fed on the two occasions?

Answer: 9,000

The correct answer is 9,000 men. In the first miracle, Christ fed 5,000 men with five loaves and two fish and in the second incident, He fed 4,000 men with seven loaves and a "few small fish". Details of the first miracle can be found in Matthew 14, Mark 6, Luke 9 and John 6 while details of the second miracle can be found in Matthew 15 and Mark 8.

Although Scripture says Jesus fed 5,000 men on the first occasion and 4,000 men on the second, many theologians believe He fed a substantially larger number as the figures do not include women and children. As per the custom of the day, woman and children were not included in census figures. As a result, many theologians believe He fed 15,000 people on the first occasion and 12,000 on the second occasion. In other words, He could've possibly fed as many as 27,000 people with twelve loaves and a tiny number of fish.

5. Not every miracle that Jesus performed was for the Jews. One woman was denied by Jesus because she was not a Jew, but Jesus was so impressed by her faith he answered her request. What was the nationality of the woman who pleaded with Jesus to cast the devil out of her daughter saying "even the dogs get the crumbs from their master's table"?

Answer: Syrophoenician

Mark 7:26 tells us, "The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter."

Matthew 15:23-28 says, "But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshiped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour."

6. This miracle shows the importance of saying "thank you"! Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem when he was met by a group of lepers. They cried for Jesus to have mercy on them and Jesus told them to go show themselves to the priest. While they were on their way they realized that they were cleansed from their disease. How many lepers out of the group came back to tell Jesus thanks?

Answer: 1 out of 10

Jesus was impressed because the only one who thanked him was a Samaritan, from a people against whom full blooded Jews were often extremely prejudiced. Because the Samaritan returned and said thanks, Jesus made him completely whole.

"And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole."
Luke 17:11-19

7. Taxes are nothing new. Even in Jesus' day, people were paying taxes, or "tribute" to those who were in charge of finances. What was the source of the silver coin that Jesus and Peter once used pay their taxes, according to Matthew 17:24? That is, the money came from which of the following sources?

Answer: the mouth of a fish

"And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee."

The amount of this tax was a didrachma, or double drachma, a silver coin worth roughly the equivalent of about 1/3 of a dollar. This did not amount to very much money, but was still a required tribute to the leaders of the area of Capernaum. (The city of Capernaum was where Jesus' ministry had first begun.)

8. In Mark 9, a man brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus so he could drive the demon from him. After the demon had come out, the boy immediately walked up to Jesus and thanked him.

Answer: False

The man brought his son to Jesus and told him that his son had been possessed by a spirit that had robbed him of speech and often threw the boy into fire or water to kill him. He asked Jesus to drive the demon out. Jesus commanded the demon to come out of the boy and it did, throwing the boy to the ground in the process. After this the boy went limp and many people thought he was dead but Jesus went over, grabbed him by the hand, and helped him up.

The boy didn't immediately walk up to Jesus and thank him so the answer is false.

9. One of Jesus' miracles was performed over a great distance for a Roman centurion. He had more faith than most of God's chosen as he believed that by merely speaking, Jesus could perform a miraculous healing. Whom did he ask Jesus to heal?

Answer: his servant

Jesus marveled at the request of the Roman who had faith greater than his own people. In Matthew 8:8,10,13 the Bible recorded; "The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed ... When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, 'Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.' ... And Jesus said unto the centurion, 'Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.'" The faith of non-Christian people in the Bible sometimes exceeded that of the apostles themselves and certainly that of many Christians in this day and age.

10. In John chapter 2, the story of the wedding at Cana, we are told that there are six jars of water. What was this water usually used for? (The NIV was used for this question.)

Answer: For ceremonial washing

Jesus turned the water into wine. We are told that the master of ceremonies did not know where the wine came from, although the servants knew. The wine was better than that which had been served at the beginning of the feast, which surprised him, because he would expect the best wine to be served when the guests were more sober.

This miracle is described as a sign, through which Jesus revealed his glory (verse 11) and we are told that because of it, his disciples believed in him.
