Answer: Elkanah

Elkanah is named in the very first verse of 1 Samuel and also in verses 4, 8, 19, 21 and 23. Then in Chapter 2 verses 11 and 20. Even with being mentioned so much, he is sometimes forgotten amid the drama of Hannah, Eli the priest, and Samuel's birth and dedication to the temple.

Answer: Jacob and Heli

Jesus' genealogy is delineated twice - in Matthew 1:1-16 and in Luke 3:23-38. From the lineage of David to Joseph, these two accounts vary. Some Bible scholars theorize that Matthew's list traces the genealogy through the kingly line while Luke focuses on the priestly line. This accounts for two different men named as the father of Joseph.

Answer: Obed

Boaz was Jesse's grandfather. Boaz and his wife Ruth had a son named Obed who became the father of Jesse, so Obed was David's grandfather. (Ruth 4:13-17) Christians take Isaiah's "Rod of Jesse" to be Jesus Christ.

Answer: Ham

Noah once became intoxicated on wine and lay naked in his tent. His son Ham saw his father's shame and told the other brothers. Shem and Japheth felt obligated to cover Noah with averted eyes. However, Noah was unforgiving to Ham for being such a tattletale and cursed him. This seems to be the only blot on the otherwise upstanding character of Noah. (Genesis 9:20-25)

Answer: Terah

Abram's name was later changed to Abraham which means "father of many nations" (Genesis 17:5). Nahor and Haran were Abram's brothers (Genesis 11:26). Serug was his great-grandfather (Genesis 11:22-25).

Answer: Moses

Amram of the tribe of Levi took Jochebed as his wife. They had three children named in the Bible - Aaron, Miriam and Moses (Exodus 6:20). Moses was actually an Egyptian name given to him by Pharaoh's daughter. His Hebrew name is lost in history.

Answer: James and John

James and John were brothers, sons of Zebedee (Matthew 4:21). The family were all fishermen by trade. When Jesus called them while they were mending their nets, they arose and followed him and never looked back.

Answer: Saul

After the death of King Saul and his son, Jonathan, in battle, David became king of Israel. Despite the enmity between Saul and David, David was very good friends with Jonathan. David wanted to show kindness to Jonathan's family and was told that there was a crippled son of Jonathan's named Mephibosheth who lived in the house of Machir. David sent for him and after this, Mephibosheth lived in the king's palace and ate from David's table.

Answer: Zephaniah

Zephaniah was the son of Cushi (Zephaniah 1:1). Many prophets mentioned their fathers in their writings because genealogy was very important to the Hebrews. Other prophets who named their fathers include Isaiah (Amoz), Jeremiah (Hilkiah), Hosea (Beeri), Ezekiel (Buzi), Joel (Pethuel), Jonah (Amittai) and Zechariah (Berechiah).

Answer: Isaiah

This well-known verse is found in Isaiah 9:6. There is no doubt by Biblical scholars that this refers to the coming of the Messiah.
