Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1933, who became the first National League player to hit an All-Star game home run?

Answer: Frankie Frisch

The first All-Star game was played in Chicago's Comiskey Park. Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees made history by blasting the first home run in All-Star game history. In the sixth inning, Frankie Frisch of the St. Louis Cardinals hit a homer off General Crowder to bring the National League to within one run, 3-2, but the American League ended up with the victory, 4-2. Klein, Hartnett, and Terry also participated in the 1933 All-Star game for the NL.
2. In 1941, which shortstop became the first player to belt two home runs in the same All-Star game?

Answer: Arky Vaughan

Ted Williams was the star of the 1941 All-Star game in Detroit, belting a walkoff three-run homer in the ninth inning to give the AL a 7-5 victory. However, Arky Vaughan of the Pittsburgh Pirates also had an outstanding game. He hit a pair of 2-run home runs, the first off Sid Hudson in the seventh inning and the other off Edgar Smith in the eighth frame. Eddie Miller, Joe Cronin and Lou Boudreau were shortstops who also participated in the 1941 All-Star game.
3. In 1950, infielder Red Schoendienst became a hero when he hit an extra-inning home run to win the All-Star game. Which National League team did he represent?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

Red Schoendienst's greatest moment as a ballplayer occurred during the 1950 All-Star game when he belted a dramatic 14th inning HR off Ted Gray of the Tigers. His home run helped the National league to win the game, 4-3. Schoendienst played infield for the Cardinals from 1945 to 1956, and again from 1961 to 1963.

He was a member of the Milwaukee Braves from 1957 to 1960. He played for the New York Giants in 1956 and 1957. Schoendienst never played for the Pirates.
4. Only one All-Star game (1964) was ever played at New York's Shea Stadium. Whose home run won the game in the ninth inning for the National League?

Answer: Johnny Callison

The Phillies' Johnny Callison achieved his moment of fame by belting a walkoff three-run home run off Red Sox pitcher Dick Radatz. The blast gave the National League a 7-4 victory in the only All-Star game played at Shea Stadium. Ken Boyer and Billy Williams had earlier homered for the National League. Callison was named the game's MVP.
5. In 1971, Reggie Jackson of the Oakland As clouted a prodigious home run to help the AL win the All-Star game. Where did Jackson hit the home run?

Answer: Tiger Stadium

Reggie Jackson etched his name into All-Star immortality by slamming one of the longest home runs in baseball history. His third inning 2-run blast off Pittsburgh's Dock Ellis rocketed against a light standard high above Tiger Stadium's right field. Some scientists have estimated that the home run traveled more than 500 feet. Jackson's home run helped the American League to win the game, 6-4, thus ending a nine-game losing streak for the AL.
6. In 1982, the All-Star game was played in Canada (Montreal) for the first time. Which infielder hit the game's only home run?

Answer: Dave Concepcion

The 1982 All-Star game was played in Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Dave Concepcion of the Reds connected for a 2-run homer off AL starting pitcher Dennis Eckersley in the second inning, to propel the National League to a 4-1 victory. Robin Yount, Ozzie Smith, and Frank White also participated in the 1982 All-Star game.
7. In 1983, Fred Lynn of the AL hit the first grand slam home run in All-Star game history. Which San Francisco Giants' pitcher surrendered the blast?

Answer: Atlee Hammaker

The 1983 All-Star game was played in Comiskey Park. Manny Trillo, Rod Carew, and Robin Yount were on base when Lynn connected for his historic round tripper. The AL won the game, 13-3. It was a nightmare performance for Hammaker. He allowed seven earned runs in two-thirds of an inning for an ERA of 94.03. Gary Lavelle was also on the 1983 NL roster, but he didn't appear in the game. Scott Garrelts was selected to the 1985 All-Star team, and Mike Krukow was chosen to represent the Giants in the 1986 All-Star contest.
8. Alfonso Soriano became only the second player in All-Star game history to hit home runs for both the American and National Leagues. Who was the first player to accomplish this feat?

Answer: Frank Robinson

Frank Robinson participated in 11 All-Star games during his career. In 1959, he belted a home run for the NL squad (Reds), and in 1971 he hit a homer for the AL team by representing the Orioles. Alfonso Soriano repeated Robinson's feat, hitting homers for the AL in 2002 and 2004 (Yankees, Rangers), and then for the National League (Cubs) in 2007. Bobby Bonds, Reggie Smith, and George Hendrick played in All-Star games for both the AL and the NL, but they did not hit HRs for both leagues.
9. Which one of these Hall of Fame players had a 2-HR All-Star game and a 2-HR World Series game during his career?

Answer: Gary Carter

Gary "Kid" Carter had a remarkable career. He hit a pair of home runs in the 1981 All-Star game as a member of the Montreal Expos In the 1986 World Series, Carter had a 2-HR game as a New York Met. Willie McCovey belted two home runs in the 1969 All-Star game for the Giants. Johnny Bench had a 2-HR game in the 1976 World Series for the Reds. Steve Garvey did not have a 2-HR game in either the All-Star game or the World Series.
10. Which one of these Hall of Fame players did not have an All-Star game home run?

Answer: Orlando Cepeda

Orlando Cepeda hit 379 home runs in his Major League career, but he had a horrendous All-Star game batting record. He went just 1-27 for a paltry .037 batting average with no home runs. Ernie Banks had an All-Star homer in 1960, Roberto Clemente homered in 1971, and George Brett homered in the 1984 All-Star game.
