Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth of the Yankees connected in the bottom of the third inning in the first-ever game played. He hit it off Cardinal pitcher Bill Hallahan. Teammate Frank Frisch would come to Hallahan's aid by becoming the first National Leaguer to hit one. Frisch got his in the top of the sixth inning. The American League won it 4-2.

2. Fans saw the first All-Star Game shutout in 1940. Which National League pitcher threw it?

Answer: Paul Derringer

Derringer was a Cincinnati Red with a name not as well known as the big guns, but he was a 20-game winner four times. In 1940, Paul went 20-12 in the season, and helped the Reds all the way to the World Series crown.

Answer: Lefty Gomez

The Yankee Gomez started five of the first six All-Star games played. Lefty Grove of the Red Sox was in-between Grove's streak and started the 1936 game. Gomez won four of the five games he started.

The Red Sox had five starters in the game with Dom DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky, Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, and Rudy York. Williams, nicknamed "Teddy Ballgame", hit two home runs, two singles, and had a combined 10 total bases with his five RBIs. The National League's only three hits came via Johnny Hopp, Peanuts Lowrey, and Walker Cooper.

Answer: Stan Musial

The Cardinal Stan Musial set an All-Star game record for this 1951 game. Not known for his speed as he stole only 78 bases while getting caught 31 times in 22 seasons, NL manager Eddie Sawyer sent him twice anyway. The National League still won the game, 8-3.

6. The 1967 All-Star game set a record by being the longest extra-inning game, going 15 innings at Anaheim Stadium. Which Cincinnati Red hit the game-winning home run for the National League?

Answer: Tony Perez

The others were not Reds in 1967. Perez hit a solo shot in the top of the 15th inning off AL pitcher Catfish Hunter. The NL won it 2-1. It would be the National League's fifth consecutive win of a run of eight games.

7. Who hit the first grand slam in All-Star Game history?

Answer: Fred Lynn

Fred's shot came for the American League in 1983, representing the California Angels. The American League won it 13-3 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The National League pitcher, Atlee Hammaker, also set an All-Star game record by allowing seven runs in that game's third inning with the help of Lynn. Lynn was also the first player in history to win the Rookie of the Year and the MVP Award in the same season in 1975.

Answer: Tom Glavine

On a stage where a pitcher should shine, the Braves' Glavine fell apart in this 1992 game beginning with the first pitch. He lasted only 1.2 innings before Braves' manager Bobby Cox yanked him for Cubs pitcher (and future Brave) Greg Maddux. Glavine gave up seven hits in the first inning, giving up four runs to the American League, which won it 13-6.

Barlick umpired in 28 seasons from 1940-1971. Al umpired in the 1942, 1949, 1952, 1955, 1959, 1966, and 1970. He also umpired seven World Series in his career. Inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1989, Barlick died in 1995 at the age of 80.

Answer: Walter Alston

Alston managed the Dodgers for 23 seasons from 1954-1976. Alston managed nine All-Star teams in his career while winning seven times. Casey Stengel set a managing record by having the helm of an All-Star team 10 times. Stengel walked away with four wins.
