4. Rip Sewell appeared in the 1946 All-Star game. He was famous for his 'ephus' pitch which was a change-up that had a high trajectory like a slow-pitch softball. He generally only threw it once or twice a game and embarrassed a number of hitters with it. In the 1946 All-Star game, who hit this pitch for a home run?

Answer: Ted Williams

The main difficulty in hitting the ephus pitch was that the batter pretty much had to supply all the power since there was little behind the pitch, therefore, even when hit, it normally did not travel far.
5. In the first All-Star game in 1933, who had the first RBI?

Answer: Lefty Gomez

Gomez singled home Jimmie Dykes in the bottom of the second inning. Lefty Gomez was also credited as the winning pitcher. During his career he won 189 games. His batting average was typical for a pitcher, but in 1932 he had 15 RBIs.

7. In the 1937 All-Star game, Dizzy Dean left the game after being hit on the foot by a line drive from which hitter?

Answer: Earl Averill

The toe injury was more serious than Dean thought and he tried to continue pitching, but the new motion wore out his arm. He went from 24-13 in 1936 to 13-16 in 1937. Plagued by arm trouble, he was traded from the Cardinals to the Cubs. From 1938-1941 he made only 38 starts with a record of 16-8.

He came out of retirement for one game in 1947 with the St. Louis Browns when he pitched four shutout innings allowing three hits but it was a gimmick appearance.
8. The 1967 All-Star game went 15 innings. Who won the game in the top of the 15th inning with a home run?

Answer: Tony Perez

Perez hit the homer off Catfish Hunter. Don Drysdale got the win and Tom Seaver the save. Seven National League pitchers put together 14 scoreless innings with 17 strikeouts. The American League pitchers had 13 scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts. The other two runs were home runs by Brooks Robinson and Dick Allen.
9. This catcher hit a home run in his first at-bat in the Major Leagues in 1986. He also hit a home run in his first at-bat in the 1988 All-Star game. Who was this outstanding catcher for the Oakland A's and Minnesota Twins?

Answer: Terry Steinbach

Terry Steinbach was named the MVP of the 1988 All-Star game. He was selected three times as an All-Star. He had a lifetime batting average of .271 and hit 146 home runs with Oakland and Minnesota.
10. The 1957 All-Star game was a controversy. What was the basis?

Answer: Ballot stuffing by Cincinnati fans

Aided by pre-printed ballots, Cincinnati fans stuffed the ballot box, and seven of the eight position players were from the Reds. Ford Frick, Commissioner of the National League, bumped Wally Post and Gus Bell off the starting lineup and took player selection away from the fans for several years.
