Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Barry and Bobby Bonds set a record that will likely never be broken. Between the two of them, they have over 1,000 home runs. How many homers did Bobby Bonds contribute to the total?

Answer: 332

Bobby Bonds' greatest home run season came in 1973, when he smacked 39 dingers for the San Francisco Giants. Bobby was known for his scrappy play and his great skill on the base paths. He was in the top 10 in stolen bases 11 times during his 14 year career.
2. The Boone family has seen three generations of Major Leaguers. Ray was a solid hitting infielder. Ray's son, Bob, was one of the smartest catchers ever to play the game. Bob had two sons to play in the big leagues in Bret and Aaron. All four of these players have been proven winners, each playing in at least one World Series. Which team saw the two younger Boone's on the field at the same time?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

Bret played for the Reds from 1994-1997, and Aaron played for the Reds from 1997-2003. The two brothers played in the same game together on June 22, 1997, when they both pinch-hit, Aaron hitting for Terry Pendleton and Bret hitting for Scott Sullivan.

They both started on the same field together a couple days later on June 24, 1997, against the Montreal Expos. Aaron got the better of his brother that day going 1-for-3. Bret was held hitless in two at-bats. On a side note, it is believed that Bob and Aaron were the first father/son duo to be ejected from the same game. Bob was managing and Aaron was playing third base. Bob was tossed arguing what he believed should have been a balk on the opposing pitcher, and Aaron was tossed in the next inning for tossing his bat after a called third strike. You might think he was tossed for arguing the call, but he was actually tossed due to an equipment violation.
3. Tito Francona and his son Terry, logged 25 years between them of Major League service. Tito was best known as the 1961 All-Star for the Cleveland Indians, and Terry was best known for his managing career. Which National League team did Terry manage from 1997-2000?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

Terry managed the Phillies to a record of 285-363 during his tenure as manager. His best season managing was 1999 when his team won 77 games. As a player, Terry was a light-hitting utility player who played for the Expos, Cubs, Reds, Indians, and Brewers, in a 10 year career.
4. Dale and Yogi Berra hit 407 home runs between them in a combined 30 years of Major League service. Yogi, a Hall of Fame player, hit 358 homers over his 19 year career, while Dale amassed only 49 dingers in his 11 years. Living in the shadow of one of the most beloved figures in the game must have taken its toll on the younger Berra. Which team took a chance on Dale in 1975, drafting him in the first round of the amateur draft?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates drafted Dale with the 20th pick of the 1975 draft where he played eight years. In 1984, he was traded to the New York Yankees along with Jay Buhner and Alfonso Pulido, where he got a chance to play on the same hallowed field that his dad had played many years before. He eventually ended his career with the Houston Astros.

Answer: Pedro and Pedro Jr. Borbon

Jim Bagby pitched for the 1920 Cleveland Indians, and his son, Jim Jr., made it to the World Series with the 1946 Boston Red Sox. Mel Stottlemyre was a World Series pitcher with the 1964 New York Yankees, and his son Todd made it to the World Series on two occasions, with the 1992 and 1993 Toronto Blue Jays. Pedro Borbon Sr. played with the Cincinnati Reds, riding the Big Red Machine to the World Series in 1972, 1975, and 1976.

His son, Pedro Jr., pitched with the Atlanta Braves during 1995, when the Baves beat the Cleveland Indians.

Gary Ward hit for the cycle on September 18, 1980, while playing for the Minnesota Twins. Unfortunately for the Twins, the Brewers had better hitting that day and prevailed 9-8, in the first game of a double header. The Twins ended up losing the second game of the double header also. On May 26, 2004, Pittsburgh's Daryle Ward matched his father's performance, hitting for the cycle against the St. Louis Cardinals.

In the first inning, he had a two-run double. In the fourth, he smacked an RBI triple.

In the fifth, he belted a three-run home run. Finally, in the ninth inning, he completed the cycle with a routine single off reliever Steve Kline. The last Pirate to hit for the cycle before Daryle was Jason Kendall. Interestingly enough, his cycle also came against the Cardinals.
