Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award with 30+ wins in the season?

Answer: Denny McLain

The Cy Young Award began presentations in 1956 in honor of pitching great Cy Young who died in 1955. McLain was on fire with the Tigers in 1968 and threw a 31-6 record. He was also a co-winner of the Cy Young Award the following season in 1969 with his 24-9 record. He shared that award with Baltimore pitcher Mike Cuellar.
2. The Braves franchise is a storied one. They were one of the first National League teams in 1876 named the Boston Red Stockings. After having six different team names the franchise moved to Milwaukee in which year?

Answer: 1953

After moving to Milwaukee in 1953, the franchise took a World Series crown five seasons later in 1957 with the arm of Warren Spahn and the bat of Hank Aaron. The franchise moved to Atlanta in 1966. The previous team names of the franchise were Red Stockings, Beaneaters, Doves, Rustlers, Bees, and Braves.
3. Which year was the first in history that no league champion was declared?

Answer: 1994

Organized professional baseball began in 1871 with the National Association. The August 12 day in 1994 was a dark one in baseball history. Due to the player's strike, baseball was postponed for the season. On that day the standings showed Montreal with 74 wins and Atlanta with 68, in the National League.

The American League had the Yankees on top with 70 wins with the White Sox at 67. The Angels and Padres were probably happy for the strike as they both had only 47 wins.
4. Who was the first shortstop in Major League history to win a home run title?

Answer: Vern Stephens

Stephens played eight seasons with the Browns, five with the Red Sox, and two with the White Sox. As a Brown in 1945 he hit 24 to lead the American League. While the runner-ups hit only 18, Tiger Hank Greenberg cranked out 44 the following season.
5. The Rookie of the Year Award was first presented in 1947 and given to Brooklyn Dodger Jackie Robinson. How many total Rookie of the Year Awards did Robinson win in his 10-season career with the Dodgers?

Answer: 1

A player can only qualify for the Rookie of the Year Award in his rookie season. After winning the award in 1947, Jackie then won the National League MVP Award in 1949, winning the award over Stan Musial and Enos Slaughter of the St. Louis Cardinals.
6. Which Hall of Fame great set a record in the 19th century for the highest batting average in the early National League, a record that carried into the 21st Century?

Answer: Hugh Duffy

The others were all American League players. Duffy was with the Boston Beaneaters in 1894 when he batted an amazing .440 to win the batting title. It was the only time in 17 seasons that he topped the .400 mark. He was a 1945 Hall of Fame inductee.

Although the 1894 Boston team's batting average was .331, the team still finished in third place behind the pennant-winning Baltimore Orioles and runner-up New York Giants.
7. The great Hank Aaron retired in 1976 with a career home run record of 755. What was Hank's highest home run total in a season?

Answer: 47

With Aaron hitting 755 over 23 seasons, this showed a tremendous amount of consistency throughout his career. He somehow never reached the 50-mark. His season high was 47 in 1971. He also hit 45 in a season, and 44 in four seasons. Amazingly also, he won only one MVP Award, in 1957 with the Braves, and was never a runner-up. Hank started his career when the Braves' Bobby Thomson was injured in the late preseason, and Hank replaced him on opening day April 13, 1954, against the Cincinnati Reds.
8. Which team went to the most World Series in the 1980s?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

All the others listed went to two World Series in the decade. The Cardinals were led by manager Whitey Herzog and won the series in 1982 against the Brewers, lost to the Royals in 1985, and lost to the Twins in 1987. The Cardinals franchise saw their 13th, 14th, and 15th World Series in the 1980s. Their all-time series record at the end of the 1980s was 9-6.
9. Which pitcher won the most Gold Gloves in the 1990s?

Answer: Greg Maddux

Not just the most, but Maddux took every single pitcher's Gold Glove in the decade. He began the decade with the Cubs, then finished it out with the Braves. Greg won a total of 18 Gold Glove Awards in addition to his four Cy Young Awards. He retired in 2008 and was an easy inductee into the Hall of Fame in 2014.
10. Outfielder Tony Gwynn began his 20-season career in 1982 with the San Diego Padres. With which team did he retire in 2001?

Answer: Padres

Tony was a 20-season career Padre. He won seven batting titles and came close to hitting the .400 mark in 1994 when he batted .394 in the season. He would have been the first .400 hitter since Ted Williams batted .406 in 1941. Gwynn was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007, then died in 2014 at the age of 54.
