Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The great Sandy Koufax retired with what team in 1966?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

Born in Brooklyn, this Brooklyn Dodger converted Los Angeles Dodger, played 12 seasons in the Majors. He struck out 200 or more batters 6 times in his career, with a season high of 382. An arthritic elbow forced him to retire, after winning 3 MVPs, 3 Cy Young Awards, and the Triple Crown 3 times.
2. Who was the first pitcher to give up 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Bert Blyleven

Blyleven is the only pitcher listed. This is a record that Bert would rather do without, as he allowed 50 big ones in 1986 as a Minnesota Twin. His ERA was 4.01, but ironically, he still managed to strike out 215 batters. Other than 1986, and allowing 46 home runs in 1987, Blyleven never allowed 25 home runs in a season, in his 22 year career.
3. Slugger Joe Jackson appeared in which of the following World Series?

Answer: 1919

Jackson played in the 1919 World Series, which tainted baseball for life with the 'Black Sox' scandal. This was the White Sox versus the Cincinnati Reds. Although Jackson did have a home run in the Series, the Reds won 5 games to 3. For his 1919 efforts, in 1920, after the investigation was over, he played his final season of baseball. Jackson took secrets to his grave in 1951.
4. Connie Mack, the first manager to win 3700 games as a manager, managed for over 50 seasons. How many Manager of the Year Awards did Mack win?

Answer: 0

Mack retired with 3731 wins and retired in 1950, after over 50 seasons, 50 of them with the Philadelphia Athletics. The manager of the year award did not exist until 1983. Mack also leads in career losses with 3948, a statistic that will never be broken.
5. Who was the first player, to have 200 hits in a season in the 20th century?

Answer: Nap Lajoie

Lajoie had a stellar year in 1901 for the Philadelphia Athletics. Along with his 232 hits, he batted a tremendous .426, setting an almost unreachable batting title mark. Jesse Burkett also reached the 200-hit mark in 1901, but it was Lajoie who hit the milestone first. Sisler set a record for number of hits (257) in a season in 1920.
6. Who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1960?

Answer: Nobody

All players listed were playing in 1960, and Mazeroski was the Pirate who won the 1960 World Series, in the bottom of the ninth inning of game 7 against the Yankees. 1960 was the last year in the century, that no person had been inducted into the Hall.
7. What player won the Cy Young Award first?

Answer: Don Newcombe

All Cy Young Award winners, and all Dodgers, Newcombe was the first recipient in history of the Award in 1956. Newcombe was 27-7 in 1956. The following season, Warren Spahn was the 2nd recipient of the award, while playing for the Milwaukee Braves.
8. The Milwaukee Brewers, who became the St. Louis Browns, became what team in 1954?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

From their only season in existence in 1901, the Brewers moved to St.Louis and became the Browns until 1953. The Orioles in their first season had a record of 54-100. After 12 seasons, the Orioles would see their first World Series Crown, skunking the Los Angeles Dodgers 4 games to 0.
9. Which of the following awards, did Jackie Robinson NOT win?

Answer: Cy Young

Jackie, who broke the color barrier and began the civil rights movement in 1947, was the Rookie of the Year. In 1949, he became the National League most valuable player, again with the Dodgers. Robinson never pitched in his career, leaving out any chance for the 'Cy'.
10. How many 2002 Detroit Tigers hit more than 20 home runs in that season?

Answer: 0

The Tigers tied for the worst season record in 2002, finishing 55-106. Their Designated Hitter, Randy Simon, hit 19 for the team's lead.
