Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many 20 game winners, did the 2003 World Series Champion Florida Marlins have in the season?

Answer: 0

The Marlins had no pitcher win even 15 games. The starting rotation was Dontrelle Willis, Mark Redman, and Brad Penny, who all won 14. Carl Pavano finished with 12, and World Series MVP Josh Beckett won nine.
2. Who was the first slugger after Babe Ruth, to hit 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Hack Wilson

The others were all pitchers. Wilson of the Cubs in 1930, smacked 56 home runs to join the immortal club with the Babe, who had already done this four times. He followed up his 56 feat in 1931 by hitting only 13. Hack retired in 1934.
3. Which Yankee pitcher in 2001, lost a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning?

Answer: Mike Mussina

The others were not pitchers, never played for the Yankees, and retired in the 1960s. Mike would have been the third Yankee in four seasons to hit perfection. In a game against the Red Sox, Mussina gave up a two-out two-strike single to Carl Everett.
4. I've done it all. After playing 10 seasons with the Reds, I went to the Orioles and won the Triple Crown in my first American League season. I've won the season MVP in both leagues. I've won an All-Star MVP, World Series MVP, a Rookie of the Year, and a Gold Glove. I popped over 500 home runs in my career. Who am I?

Answer: Frank Robinson

The others listed were all one-team players. Robinson began his career in 1956 with the Reds and won the Rookie of the Year. In 1966 in a Baltimore uniform, he won the Triple Crown, and hit 586 career home runs. Retiring in 1976 after 21 seasons, Frank became a manager in the big leagues.
5. Which St. Louis great was the first catcher in history to lead the league in triples?

Answer: Tim McCarver

The others never played for the Cardinals and never played catcher. McCarver hit 13 triples in 1966. He showed the bat and speed, but only stole 9 bases in the season. After 21 years he hung up his mask and later became a TV analyst.
6. Which team in 2003, saw their 10th consecutive season without winning 80 games?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

1993 saw the Tigers under the helm of Sparky Anderson, have a record of 85-77. Since that period, the Tigers have struggled, and saw a record of 43-119 in 2003. In the off-season, Detroit picked up Pudge Rodriguez to help alleviate this steak.
7. Which Major League team was the first to have two sluggers hit over 50 home runs in the same season?

Answer: Yankees - 1961

In 1961, it was the race between Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. Maris rounded the season out with 61 against Mantle's 54. In 1927, arguably the greatest team in history, Babe Ruth smacked 60 against Lou Gehrig's 47. Neither the 1997 Cardinals or 1965 Cubs saw any player hit over 35 big ones.
8. Which player had the nickname of 'Red'?

Answer: Albert Schoendienst

Whitey Ford, Pops Stargell, and Yogi Berra, never had the nickname of Red. Red Shoendienst played 19 seasons, mostly for the St. Louis Cardinals. After putting up his glove, he managed for 12 seasons in the Majors, winning a World Series in 1967 with the Cardinals, and a NL Crown the following season.
9. After the great Babe Ruth, who was the second player in history to reach 500 career home runs?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

The others never reached the 500 plateau. Foxx hit the milestone in 1940 with the Red Sox. He spent most of his career with the Athletics of Philadelphia and with Boston. Foxx, nicknamed 'Double XX', retired with 534 home runs in 1945.
10. In the 2003 season, who was the first pitcher in over 20 years to lose 20 games in a season?

Answer: Mike Maroth

The others all won over 20 games in 2003. Maroth led the Detroit Tigers with wins. He won 9 games but also lost 21.
