Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which fight occurred on 8 March 1971?

Answer: Joe Frazier vs. Muhammad Ali I

At Madison Square Garden in New York City, Joe Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali by unanimous decision after 15 rounds, thus settling the dispute as to who was heavyweight champion. Ali visited the canvas in round 15 courtesy of Frazier's vaunted left hook.
2. Which fight occurred on 25 September 1962?

Answer: Floyd Patterson vs. Sonny Liston I

At Comiskey Park in Chicago, IL, the feared Charles "Sonny" Liston scored the first of his two one round knockout victories over Floyd Patterson to win the heavyweight championship. The second KO occurred on 22 July 1963.
3. Who fought on 19 June 1936?

Answer: Max Schmeling vs. Joe Louis I

The fight date being moved back one day because of rain, Max Schmeling, a 10-1 underdog shocked the world by knocking out the highly regarded Louis in the 12th round, temporarily halting the mediocre rise of the "Brown Bomber".
4. Which fight occurred on 17 December 1952?

Answer: Archie Moore vs. Joey Maxim I

After 16 long years, an exasparated Archie Moore made good on his first title opportunity, scoring a decision victory in 15 rounds over the badly faded Maxim. Maxim would lose nine of his next (and last) 12 bouts, including the final six.
5. Which of these fights took place on 25 March 1974?

Answer: George Foreman vs. Ken Norton

In perhaps his greatest performance, world heavyweight champion George Foreman sucessfully defended his championship, with a brutal second round knockout over the formidable Ken Norton. This event took place in Caracas, Venezuela.
6. Which bout took place on 15 June 1976?

Answer: George Foreman vs. Joe Frazier II

Foreman sent the "shot" Joe Frazier into retirement with his second KO victory over "Smokin Joe", this one occurred in five rounds at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island New York. Frazier would make an ill advised comeback five years later, but that's another story.
7. Which bout took place 20 June 1980?

Answer: Roberto Duran vs. Ray Leonard I

In his finest hour, Roberto Duran won a hard fought action packed 15 round decision over defending (WBC) welterweight champion Ray Leonard.
8. Which bout took place on 30 November 1979?

Answer: Vito Antuofermo vs. Marvin Hagler I

The real Rocky emerged in Las Vegas on the undercard of Leonard-Benitez. World middleweight champion Vito Antuofermo, who fell behind early to the heavily favorite Hagler and despite five cuts around both eyes, continued to press forward without regard to his face or body, finished up like a champion winning several of the late rounds.

While it appeared Hagler won because of his early lead, the judges felt that Antuofermo's strong finished pulled him even after 15 savagely fought rounds.
9. Which fight took place 22 November 1965?

Answer: Muhammad Ali vs. Floyd Patterson I

Ali, who at the time had much contempt for Patterson and appeared to carry him to hand out additional punishment, pretty much had his way scoring a 12th round KO over his brave opponent.
10. Which fight took place on 16 September 1981?

Answer: Ray Leonard vs Thomas "Hitman" Hearns I

In a fight that lived up to its hype, Leonard, after round 12 was told by Angelo Dundee, "you're blowing it son", shifted into high gear and with time running out finally caught up to the legendary "Hitman" scoring a 14th round TKO win. It would be nine years before these two would meet again, and that too, is another story.
