At Comiskey Park in Chicago, IL, the feared Charles "Sonny" Liston scored the first of his two one round knockout victories over Floyd Patterson to win the heavyweight championship. The second KO occurred on 22 July 1963.

The fight date being moved back one day because of rain, Max Schmeling, a 10-1 underdog shocked the world by knocking out the highly regarded Louis in the 12th round, temporarily halting the mediocre rise of the "Brown Bomber".

After 16 long years, an exasparated Archie Moore made good on his first title opportunity, scoring a decision victory in 15 rounds over the badly faded Maxim. Maxim would lose nine of his next (and last) 12 bouts, including the final six.

In perhaps his greatest performance, world heavyweight champion George Foreman sucessfully defended his championship, with a brutal second round knockout over the formidable Ken Norton. This event took place in Caracas, Venezuela.

In his finest hour, Roberto Duran won a hard fought action packed 15 round decision over defending (WBC) welterweight champion Ray Leonard.

The real Rocky emerged in Las Vegas on the undercard of Leonard-Benitez. World middleweight champion Vito Antuofermo, who fell behind early to the heavily favorite Hagler and despite five cuts around both eyes, continued to press forward without regard to his face or body, finished up like a champion winning several of the late rounds.

While it appeared Hagler won because of his early lead, the judges felt that Antuofermo's strong finished pulled him even after 15 savagely fought rounds.

Ali, who at the time had much contempt for Patterson and appeared to carry him to hand out additional punishment, pretty much had his way scoring a 12th round KO over his brave opponent.
