Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Round 1, Australia: What helped Giancarlo Fisichella achieve pole position?

Answer: Started raining after his lap so no other competitive time could be set

Giancarlo Fisichella set a good time, but as he came around the final corner on his flying lap, the heavens opened and he was the last driver to complete a lap in decent conditions. This weather caught out the next two drivers badly, Felipe Massa and Michael Schumacher.
2. Round 2, Malaysia: Which driver got his team's first ever podium?

Answer: Jarno Trulli

Jarno Trulli managed to hold on to his 2nd place grid position for most of the race, with only pit stops meaning a change in position. He got Toyota's first podium in their most competitive season to date.
3. Round 3, Bahrain: Which driver replaced Juan Pablo Montoya after his "tennis accident"?

Answer: Pedro De La Rosa

All of these drivers had links to Mclaren, but it was De La Rosa who was given the chance to prove himself in the heat of Bahrain. It turned out to be a good choice, with a 5th place and fastest lap. However, Alex Wurz would take over in Imola, and perform even better with a podium after the B.A.R.'s were disqualified.
4. Round 4, San Marino: What was the time (in seconds) gap between Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher at the end?

Answer: 0.215

For many laps, Michael Schumacher had been catching Alonso at a phoenomenal rate per lap, but he couldn't find a way pass at the end and stayed behind Alonso. Strangely, it was the opposite way around in 2006, with Schumacher the winner and Alonso unable to get past!
5. Round 5, Spain: For how many consecutive laps did Kimi Raikkonen lead the race for?

Answer: 66

A convincing lights to flag victory for Raikkonen from his pole position. A disappointing race from Ferrari's point of view, with Schumacher withdrawing because of tire problems, and Barrichello just missing out on points with a 9th place.
6. Round 6, Monaco: Where did the B.A.R. Hondas finish the race?

Answer: Did not take part

Still banned after the fuel tank incident at Imola, Jenson Button decided to help with the commentary for ITV1 in Britain. Raikkonen won again, and championship leader Alonso could manage no better than 4th. Mark Webber also claimed his first F1 podium visit, along with teammate Nick Heidfeld.
7. Round 7, Europe: Which driver made the first pit stop of the race?

Answer: Takuma Sato

Takuma and Ralf both pitted on lap 1, but Sato arrived first. More interestingly, the race is remembered for the last lap incident in which Raikkonen's wheel flew off while he was leading, handing Fernando Alonso a very lucky victory.
8. Round 8, Canada: Why was Montoya in trouble with the stewards, and subsequently disqualified?

Answer: Not respecting the red light at the pit exit

Montoya came out of the pits as the safety car came past, which was the reason for the red light. He slotted in the pack which he was not allowed to do. Raikkonen won the race with Michael Schumacher not very far behind. This and the next race would earn the German 18 points in total, his best results of the season for him.
9. Round 9, America: Fascinating race wasn't it! Despite all of the excitement, who became a Portuguese icon?

Answer: Tiago Monteiro

One of the most boring races in history, with all 14 Michelin runners pulling out because of safety reasons at the last corner. Ferrari's best result in a very disappointing season, and Tiago Monteiro scoring 6 points to become an overnight sensation to his country.
10. Round 10, France: Which of the following drivers finished the French Grand Prix?

Answer: Jacques Villeneuve

Villeneuve scored 1 point for his finish in 8th, while Klien retired with a fuel pressure problem on lap 2, Massa for a loss of hydraulic pressure on lap 31, and Montoya also suffering from his hydraulics on lap 47.
11. Round 11, Britain: Which English county is Silverstone located in?

Answer: Northamptonshire

Montoya won his first race of the season after a great start. Raikkonen stormed through the field from the back after an engine change, to 3rd place and a spot on the podium.
12. Round 12, Germany: What is the first corner of the Hockenheim track called?

Answer: Nordkurve

Einfahrt parabolika is the 2nd corner, the Hochgesh corner is the 3rd, and the Spitzkehre is the horrible little hairpin at the top of the circuit.
13. Round 13, Hungary: Jenson Button wanted to change teams again! Who had he signed with for 2006?

Answer: Williams

In 2004, Jenson wanted to leave B.A.R. to join Williams. He couldn't, but he was due to move in 2006. However, he has changed his mind, and decided that staying at B.A.R. was best. It cost him a lot of money to have Williams release him from his contract and enable him to stay with B.A.R., later called Honda.
14. Round 14, Turkey: How many spectators were there for the first-ever Turkish Grand Prix?

Answer: 70, 000

Istanbul Park proved to be a challenging track where the 70,000 strong crowd watched the action. Raikkonen was the winner, Alonso 2nd, and Montoya 3rd. Michael Schumacher ended his succession of decent results after colliding with Mark Webber.
15. Round 15, Italy: What happened in this race that had only happened once before in F1 history?

Answer: Everyone finished the race

All 20 drivers made it home, something that had only happened once before. Montoya won again, with the two Renaults behind him. Raikkonens 4th meant that he needed a miracle to snatch the championship of Fernando Alonso
16. Round 16, Belgium: The longest track on the calendar, but how many kilometres/miles was it?

Answer: 6.976 (4.33 miles)

44 laps of this fantastic circuit, which has sadly been taken off the calendar for 2006. Raikkonen kept his championship hopes alive with a win, although Alonso made it a small advantage with his second place. Button finished off the podium with a third.
17. Round 17, Brazil: Alonso claims the title, but only manages to finish in which position for the race?

Answer: 3rd

Third place was all Alonso needed to take his first World Championship. Montoya won, but nobody really cared as the Spaniard became F1s youngest ever world champion, and ended Michael Schumacher's winning streak of 5 titles in a row.
18. Round 18, Japan: Which part of the track did Raikkonen get past Fisichella on the last lap to win this race?

Answer: Main Straight

Fisichella couldn't hold off Raikkonen any longer, and the Finn used all of the track and more in his effort to overtake. Also, Alonsos move on Michael Schumacher around the outside at 130R, was absolutely amazing.
19. Round 19, China: In the last race of the season, which teams left the sport (or were renamed because of different owners) after the Chinese Grand Prix?

Answer: B.A.R., Minardi, Jordan, and Sauber

All four teams were renamed for the 2006 season. B.A.R would become Honda, Minardi to become Scuderia Toro Rosso, Jordan to become Midland, and Sauber to become BMW Sauber. Alonso won the last race of the season, and Michael Schumacher managed to hold off Montoya to stay 3rd in the championship.
20. How many drivers scored points in 2005?

Answer: 24

27 drivers took part, 24 scored at least one point.
