Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jackie Stewart from Scotland was one of the world's greatest participants in which kind of racing?

Answer: Formula One auto racing

Sir John Young Stewart, known to his fans as "The Flying Scot", was arguably one of the world's greatest Formula One drivers between 1963-1975. Formula One is the highest class of single-seated auto racing sanctioned by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile.

This is the fastest type of auto racing with speeds sometimes reaching 220 mph (360km/h).

2. The 1994 movie "8 Seconds" deals with which dangerous sport?

Answer: Bull riding

"8 Seconds" (1994) deals with the life and death of bull rider Lane Frost. The name of the movie is a reference to the length of time a bull rider must stay on a bull for a successful ride. One of the most popular sports in rodeo, bull riding is nevertheless incredibly dangerous.

3. Appropriately, what city hosted the first modern Olympic games in 1896?

Answer: Athens, Greece

As the country Greece was home to the ancient games, it seemed appropriate to play the first games of the modern era there. The games have progressed over the years with new sports added often.

4. In sports, the term "pitch" in baseball means a ball is being thrown to a batter. In golf, the term "pitch" means what?

Answer: A short golf shot to the green

A "pitch shot", most often with a club known as a "pitching wedge", is one of the more difficult shots in the game to learn and use properly. It will generally determine how long your putt to the cup will be after the ball lands on the green. You'll always hear "sales pitches" from golfers selling new or used clubs. And, if you play golf with someone who kicks their ball, you may want to join some other foursome.

5. Which of the following professional boxers first popularized the "rope-a-dope" tactic?

Answer: Muhammad Ali

Ali, Pacquiao, Ward and Mayweather all used the "rope-a-dope" tactic in their professional boxing careers. Ali was the first to name it and make it widely recognized. Particularly in the "Rumble in the Jungle" against George Foreman (1974), Ali would back into the ropes, cover up and endure a great many blows from his opponent, thereby tiring the opponent out. Because the ropes absorbed much of the force of those blows, Ali called the tactic the "rope-a-dope."

6. This one-legged runner became famous for the Marathon of Hope. An international run held annually in his name is one of the largest one-day fundraisers for cancer research in the world. Who is this Canadian icon?

Answer: Terry Fox

Terry Fox lost his right leg to osteosarcoma. In 1980 at the age of 21, he decided to run coast to coast across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Sadly, his cancer metastasized and he was unable to complete his run. A nationwide telethon was organized to finish raising funds, and Terry's goal of getting one dollar from every single person in Canada was reached.

In 2009, the run was held in over 50 countries.

7. The "Packers sweep" was a famous play in what team sport?

Answer: American gridiron football

In American-rules gridiron football, there is a basic offensive play called a sweep. It is essentially a play in which a halfback or running back receives the ball from the quarterback by a handoff or a pitch and runs parallel to the line of scrimmage before turning upfield to follow a blocker through a hole in the defensive line. Coach Vince Lombardi perfected the sweep while he was head coach of the professional Green Bay Packers football team in the 1960s.

The so-called Packers sweep or Lombardi sweep was nuanced in that it could be run out of a variety of formations, could be run to the left or the right of the center, and could be run inside or outside of the tight end.

The Packers sweep was so hard to defend against that it led the team to five NFL championships and two Super Bowl victories.

8. NAME THE SPORT: Which sport has been played by teams called the Dallas Dingoes and the Toronto Dingos?

Answer: Australian Rules Football

Though the spelling differs, it seems that teams in Texas and Ontario have both chosen to name their Aussie rules teams after Australian wild dogs. Founded in 1997, the Dallas team has undergone name changes from Outlaws to Magpies to Dingoes (in 2019), playing in the US Australian Rules Football League.

The Toronto team, sometimes called the Downtown Dingos, also formed in the mid-1990s, playing in an Ontario Australian rules league.

10. FOOTBALL (SOCCER): Which of the following countries did NOT host the FIFA World Cup in the 20th century?

Answer: South Africa

Uruguay hosted and won the very first World Cup in 1930; Brazil hosted the fourth world cup in 1950 and lost to Uruguay in the finals. France hosted the third world cup in 1938 and the last World Cup of the century in 1998, when it defeated Brazil 3-0 in the final. South Africa became the first African nation to host the World Cup in 2010; however, the team was eliminated in the group stages despite defeating a favored French team in the last group game.
