The property on which the Augusta National Golf Club now stands was once the site of a plant nursery known as Fruitland Nurseries. It was started by the Berckmans family who had owned the land since 1857, but the nursery ceased operations when Prosper Berckmans died in 1910. The land was purchased in 1931 by the founders of the Augusta National Golf Club for $70,000 and the holes were named after shrubs and trees in recognition of the nursery. Examples include the Magnolia hole at Number 5, the White Dogwood hole at number 11 and the Azalea hole at number 13.

The opening ceremony was described as spectacular and spellbinding and began at exactly 8 seconds and 8 minutes past 8 pm (local time), stressing the significance of the number eight as a lucky number in Chinese and other Asian cultures. In Mandarin, the number 8 (ba) sounds like "to prosper" (fa). China certainly prospered, leading the gold medal tally at the Games with 48.
