Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the maximum number of clubs that a player may carry in their bag during a round of golf?

Answer: 14

Rule 4.4 of the Royal and Ancient Rules of Golf state "The player must not start a stipulated round with more than fourteen clubs. He is limited to the clubs thus selected for that round, except that if he started with fewer than fourteen clubs, he may add any number, provided his total number does not exceed fourteen." At the 2001 Open Championships, Ian Woosnam had just moved into a share of the lead when he realised he had 15 clubs in his bag, thereby incurring a two stroke penalty.

At the end of the competition, those two strokes had cost Woosnam second place.
2. In July 1993, Javier Sotomayor became the first man to jump over eight feet (2.44 metres) in the high jump. What nationality is Sotomayor?

Answer: Cuban

Sotomayor won gold at the 1992 Olympics and would surely have added to that had Cuba not boycotted the Games in 1984 and 1988 and Sotomayor been injured before the 1996 event. His 1993 jump of eight feet and half an inch (2.45 metres) broke his own record of eight feet dead (2.44 metres) set in 1989.
3. Glasgow Rocks are a professional Scottish sports team, but which sport do they play?

Answer: Basketball

The Rocks were formed as the Edinburgh Rocks in 1998 and joined the British Basketball League the same year. In 2002, they moved to a newly built arena in Glasgow and were renamed the Scottish Rocks and in 2008, the team was rebranded the Glasgow Rocks. Texan, Sterling Davis, was head coach of the Rocks from 2007 to 2017 and under him they finished third in the league three times as well as losing twice in the BBL cup final, both times to fierce rivals, the Newcastle Eagles.
4. The last international match at the old Wembley stadium saw Germany defeat England 1-0. Which Liverpool player scored the winning goal, and in doing so became the last player to score at Wembley before its demolition?

Answer: Dieter Hamann

Dieter "Didi" Hamann was a Liverpool player from 1999 to 2006, and as a defensive midfield player wasn't prolific in front of goal, but will always be in the record books for this Wembley strike. Demolition on Wembley started in 2002 and in 2007, the New Wembley stadium opened on the original site.
5. In billiards, how many points are scored for a cannon?

Answer: 2

A cannon is simply striking your cue ball so that it strikes the opponenent's cue ball and the red ball, in any order. Sinking the red with your cue ball is worth three points and sinking the opponent's cue ball with your cue ball is worth two points.
6. Which English football club play in the Scottish football league?

Answer: Berwick Rangers

Berwick is the most northern town in England, situated just 2.5 miles (4 km) south of the Scottish border. The team have played in the Scottish leagues since 1918 and although they have never had glory days, their defeat of the mighty Rangers in the Scottish Cup in 1967 is still fondly remembered.
7. In 1985, tennis sensation, Boris Becker, became the youngest ever male Grand Slam singles champion when he won Wimbledon. Who broke that record four years later, in 1989?

Answer: Michael Chang

Becker from Germany was aged just 17 years, 227 days on his Wimbledon triumph when he beat Kevin Curren in the final. American, Chang won the French Open when he was aged 17 years 110 days, beating Stefan Edberg by three sets to two.
8. New Zealander, Susan Devoy was world champion four times between 1985 and 1992 in which non-Olympic sport?

Answer: Squash

Devoy won the World Open in 1985, 1987, 1990 and 1992 as well as being runner up in 1989. When she retired from competitive squash in 1992, she was reigning champion in eight championships. Squash has never been accepted as an Olympic sport as the committee feels that the TV viewing public wouldn't be able to follow the action.
9. For which Italian club did Argentinian football legend, Diego Maradona, play?

Answer: Napoli

Maradona was at Napoli from 1984 to 1991, having moved there after two seasons at Spanish giants Barcelona. During his time at Napoli the club won Serie A twice as well as the Coppa Italia, the Supercoppa Italia and the UEFA Cup. Maradona retired from playing in 1997, after spells with Sevilla, Boca Juniors and Newell's Old Boys.
10. What is the nickname of darts player Phil Taylor?

Answer: The Power

Taylor has won countless world championships and events, far too many to list here and is regarded by many as the greatest darts player ever, which isn't bad when you consider he didn't take the sport up until 1986, when he was 26 years old. His talent was so evident that Eric Bristow started to sponsor him and he turned professional all in the same year.
