Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many times did the great Ernie Banks win a Rookie of the Year award throughout his career of 19 seasons?

Answer: 0

Mr. Cub never won the ROY. His rookie year was in 1953 in Chicago and was always a Cub for 19 seasons. Jim 'Junior' Gilliam won the award in 1953 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Banks retired with 512 home runs with very consistent numbers. The Rookie of the Year award is only awarded in a players rookie year.
2. Which team was once known as the Orphans?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

No other listed were in existence before 1960. The Cubs were the Orphans from 1898-1902, finishing no better than 4th place. They were managed by Tom Burns and Tom Loftus. In 1903 they became the Chicago Cubs. In that season they were led by the famous Tinkers-Evers-Chance double-play combination, and the arms of Jack Taylor and Jake Weimer.
3. How many home runs did Reggie Jackson hit in his first year of baseball in 1967?

Answer: 1

Jackson was brought up in the A's organization in Kansas City in 1967 before they moved to Oakland the following year. His solo home run was the beginning of great things to come. He hit 29 the following year, and 47 in 1969. Mr. October retired with 563 big ones in 21 seasons.
4. What does it mean when there is a 'full count'?

Answer: There are 3 balls and 2 strikes on the batter

A full count is the one thing that a pitcher does not want. He has to make the next pitch in the strike zone to strike out the batter. The problem is, the batter also knows this.
5. What team won 7 World Series in a row in the 20th Century?

Answer: No team did this

7 is a ridiculous number, but on the other hand so is 5. The Yankees won 5 in a row from 1949-1953. No team came close to this, except the Yankees also winning 4 in a row from 1936 to 1939. In their streak of 5, they beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 3 times.
6. 500 home run club member Eddie Murray, hit his last home run with which team?

Answer: Angels

The only team listed that he played with was the Angels. He hit his final 3 with them in 1997. He retired with 504 home runs after 21 seasons, mostly with the Orioles.
7. Hall of Famer Yogi Berra started his career with what team?

Answer: Yankees

In 1946, no other team listed existed. Yogi played 19 seasons consisting of 2120 games. He played only 4 games as a non-Yankee with the Mets in 1965 before he retired. In his inaugural year with the Yankees, he was 8-for-22 with two home runs.
8. Who was Nestor Chylak?

Answer: An umpire

Chylak was a Major League umpire for many years. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999 which is a rarity for umpires. There were only 8 umpires inducted into the Hall of Fame in all the 20th Century. They were Chylak, Bill McGowan, Al Barlick, Cal Hubbard, Jocko Conlan, Billy Evans, Tom Connolly, and Bill Klem. Nestor died in 1982.
9. Which of the following pitchers appeared in over 1100 games in his career?

Answer: Jesse Orosco

No other pitcher listed besides Orosco appeared in more than 900 games. With the 2001 Los Angeles Dodgers, Orosco had appeared in 1131 games after 21 seasons, and continued into the 2002 season. He led all 20th Century pitchers in most game appearances.
10. 2002 World Series Giants' catcher Benito Santiago won the Rookie of the Year award in what year?

Answer: 1987

Santiago won the award in 1987 with the San Diego Padres. He was traded to the Marlins in 1993, and to the Reds in 1995. In 1996 he was moved to Philadelphia where he wasn't appreciated, and was traded to the Blue Jays for two seasons. 1999 saw him as a Cub, and 2000 as a Cincinnati Red again. The Giants purchased his contract in 2001.
