Answer: 1889

Just three years after their formation, Sheffield United entered the Football League, and made a promising start to their Football League career.
2. Who was the club's first manager in their history?

Answer: J B Wolstinholm

Wolstinholm was the manager between 1889-99, with Nicholson taking over for over 30 years straight afterward between 1899-32. Davison had a 20-year stint at the club, while Freeman was manager between 1952-55. Other Sheffield United managers over the years include Joe Mercer, Dave Bassett, Ian Porterfield, and Neil Warnock.
3. Keith Gillespie was signed by Sheffield United from which club in 2005?

Answer: Leicester City

Gillespie started out his career at Old Trafford with Manchester United in 1993. After just nine League games in two seasons he moved to Newcastle, where he played 113 times in the League between 1995-98. Gillespie was then sold to Blackburn and between 1998-2003, he played 115 League games.

He had a free transfer to Leicester where he would play 42 League games, until signing for Sheffield United in August, 2005.

United had first won the Cup in 1899, beating Derby County 4-1. In 1902, they won the Cup for the second time by beating Southampton 2-1 in a replay, following a 1-1 draw. The team that day was: Harold Gough, Billy Cook, John English, Albert Sturgess, William Brelsford, George Utley, James Simmons, Stanley Fazackerley, Joseph Kitchen, Wallace Masterman, and Robert Evans. Simmons, Kitchen, and Fazackerley scored the goals in the game.
6. Which Sheffield United player scored the first ever goal in the Premiership?

Answer: Brian Deane

Sheffield United lined up against Manchester United on 15th August, 1992, and won the game 2-1. Deane's first goal in the game came as early as the fifth minute, and he doubled the lead in the 50th with a penalty. Mark Hughes pulled one back for the eventual League champions.

Shaw played for the club between 1948-66, and amassed 629 League appearances. Peschisolido played in 84 League games for the Blades between 2001-04. Tracey kept goal in 332 League games for the club between 1988-2003, and Whitehouse played 231 League games between 1989-2000.

In United's first ever League season, they recorded the 10-0 victory over Burslem Port Vale on 10th December, 1892. The Blades were also promoted that season, along with Small Heath and Darwen.

Answer: Vinny Jones

Vinny Jones was a tough-tackling midfielder, who rarely passed up a chance to clatter into someone that had the ball or otherwise! Since his retirement from the game, Jones has appeared in numerous movies.
