Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Major League Baseball team finished the 2014 season with the worst record?

Answer: Arizona Diamondbacks

The other teams were all division winners in 2014. The Diamondbacks finished a dismal 64-98 under manager Kirk Gibson, with Alan Trammell taking over for the last three games of the season. They couldn't get a starter to muster 20 home runs, bat over .300, or even have a 12-game winner from the mound.
2. Jon Jay of the St Louis Cardinals led the Majors in 2014 by being hit by a pitch 20 times. Who set a season record with 50 bruises in 1971?

Answer: Ron Hunt

Hunt led the league by being hit by a pitch six times during his short 12-season career. He led his bruises six consecutive seasons from 1968-1974 with the Giants and Expos, setting the record while in Montreal. He retired as a Cardinal in 1974 after being hit 243 times in his career.
3. Who was the first player in history to win back-to-back All-Star game MVP awards?

Answer: Mike Trout

None of the others won the award once. The All-Star MVP Award began its presentation in 1962 with Maury Wills of the Dodgers and Leon Wagner of the Angels sharing the award. Trout of the Angels made his first All-Star appearance in 2012. In his third consecutive appearance in 2014 he won his first award.

In 2015, he led off the game with a home run, opening the door for his second consecutive award.
4. Hall of Fame great Cy Young began his fantastic pitching career in 1890, and played with the same team for nine seasons before changing uniforms. Which team was this that he won 241 of his 511 career victories?

Answer: Cleveland Spiders

Young pitched for the Spiders from 1890-1898 before the team closed their doors in 1899. In that franchise-ending season, they finished it all with the worst record in baseball history by going 20-134. Just before the 1899 season, the Spiders assigned Young to the St. Louis Perfectos (later Cardinals), then joined the new American League's Boston Americans in 1901.

He would make two more moves to the Cleveland Indians then the Boston Rustlers of the National League and retired after the 1911 season.

He retired with a tremendous 511 wins and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937 with only 76% of the ballot voting. He died in 1955 at the age of 88.
5. The great Pete Rose played for 24 seasons in the big leagues. He also managed the Cincinnati Reds in his career. Which other National League team did Rose manage?

Answer: He did not manage any other team

Rose was a Rookie of the Year Award winner with the Reds in 1963 and played with them until he signed with the Phillies as a free agent in December 1978. He signed with the Expos in 1984, then they traded him back to Cincinnati before the season ended.

He was the runner-up NL MVP in 1968, then bagged the award in 1973. Pete retired as a player in 1986. He held the reins of the Reds from 1984-1989.
6. Mike Trout of the Angels hit an All-Star game lead-off home run in July 2015. It had been more than 25 years since someone opened an All-Star game with a lead-off home run. Who was this Kansas City Royal?

Answer: Bo Jackson

Trout of the Angels duplicated Jackson's feat against the National League in 2015. Jackson was in his fourth of eight seasons in 1989, and it was his only All-Star appearance. He hit 32 home runs in the season. Bo was given the All-Star MVP Award for his game effort.
7. For decades, the great New York Giant Mel Ott held the National League record for career home runs. Which National League player broke his career record in 1965 when he hit his 512th home run?

Answer: Willie Mays

The others were all career American League players and never reached the 500 home run milestone. Mays of the Giants hit his National League historic home run on May 4, 1965. He went on to hit 660 in his Hall of Fame career. When he retired in 1973 after 22 seasons, Willie was third on the all-time list for career home runs.
8. For the 2014 season, which National League manager received his first Manager of the Year Award in his rookie managing season?

Answer: Matt Williams

The others were all American League managers in 2014. Williams took the Washington Nationals to an Eastern Division crown with a 96-66 season record in 2014, 17 games ahead of the runner-up Atlanta Braves. The Nationals lost the League Division Series to the Giants, three games to one. Matt played most of his career of 17 seasons from 1987-2003 with the Giants.
9. Which of these Hall of Fame Major League greats never won 20 games in a season as a pitcher in their Major League career?

Answer: Satchel Paige

Glavine was a five time 20-game winner with Atlanta in the 1990s. Ruth won 23 games in 1916, then 24 in 1917 with Boston. Ryan was a two-time 20-game winner with the Angels in the 1970s. After a stellar career and over 2000 undocumented wins in the Negro Leagues, Paige appeared in only six Major League seasons.

His most winning season was in 1952 with the St. Louis Browns by going 12-10. Paige's Major League career record was 28-31. He inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971.
10. When Hall of Fame great Yogi Berra joined the Yankees in 1946, his craving for the uniform number 8 was squashed because it was already on the back of teammate and Hall of Fame catcher Bill Dickey. Which number did Yogi wear in his rookie Yankee season?

Answer: 38

In 1947 Yogi didn't like the 38 so he changed to 35. When Dickey retired after the 1947 season, Berra buttoned up the number 8 and his own Hall of Fame career began. The Yankees retired the number 8 in both Dickey and Berra's honor.
