Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which legendary basketball coach was sacked by Indiana University in 2000 after a series of incidents on and off the court?

Answer: Bob Knight

Knight won over 900 games during a head-coaching career which included spells at Army, Indiana and Texas Tech. He also led the USA men's team to a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics. His spell in charge of Indiana saw them win three national championships, but numerous controversial incidents, which included him apparently choking one of his players, eventually led to his dismissal.
2. Which golfer won his only major at the 1992 US Open?

Answer: Tom Kite

Kite turned pro in 1972, and would go on to win 19 PGA tour events between 1976 and 1993. At Pebble Beach, in 1992, he defeated Jeff Sluman by two strokes to win the US Open, aged 42. Kite played in seven US Ryder Cup teams, as well as serving as team captain in 1997.
3. Which Hall of Fame quarterback led the Buffalo Bills to four consecutive NFL Superbowl appearances in the early 1990s?

Answer: Jim Kelly

Kelly played college football with the Miami Hurricanes, before being drafted by the Bills in 1983. He elected to sign for the Houston Gamblers of the USFL instead, but, when that league folded, eventually joined Buffalo in time for the 1986 season. He quickly helped transform the fortunes of the struggling franchise, leading them to four straight Superbowls following the 1990-93 seasons. Sadly for Kelly and the Bills, they lost all four.
4. Which French skier won three gold medals at the 1968 Winter Olympics?

Answer: Jean-Claude Killy

Killy, from St Cloud near Paris, was the winner of the very first alpine skiing World Cup, in 1967. The following year, he won gold in the downhill, slalom and giant slalom events at the Winter Olympics, which were held at Grenoble. He promptly retired from the sport at the end of that season.
5. Which one of these US colleges has sports teams nicknamed Golden Flashes?

Answer: Kent State

Kent State, based in the town of Kent, Ohio, is a member of the Mid-American Conference. Whilst the Golden Flashes failed to win a national title in any sport during the 20th century, they have produced many famous sportsmen over the years, including New York Yankees catcher Thurman Munson, 2003 British Open golf champion Ben Curtis, and Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Jack Lambert.
6. Which one of the following is a sport similair to basketball, in which teams are made up of four male and four female players?

Answer: Korfball

Korfball was invented in the Netherlands, and was based on a similair Swedish sport called Ringboll. Players are confined to certain zones of the court, and tackling can only take place between opponents of the same gender. The first World Championships took place in 1978, with the Netherlands winning seven of the first eight tournaments held up until 2007. Belgium were the only other 20th century champions, winning on home soil in 1991.
7. What surname is shared by a golfer who won six women's majors between 1987 and 1997, and a female tennis player who won 12 grand slam singles titles between 1966 and 1975?

Answer: King

Betsy King won 34 LPGA tour events between 1984 and 2001. She won her first major at the Nabisco Dinah Shore Championship in 1987.

Billie Jean King won all four tennis Grand Slam events in both singles and mixed doubles, and all but the Australian Open in women's doubles. Her most famous win was perhaps the "battle of the sexes" match vs Bobby Riggs at the Houston Astrodome in 1973.
8. Which baseball Hall of Fame pitcher won three Cy Young Awards and two World Series MVP awards between 1963 and 1966?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax signed for his hometown Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. He remained with the franchise when they moved to Los Angeles in 1958 and won his first World Series title the following year. He made the first of seven All-Star Game appearances in 1961, but his career really hit the heights in 1963, when he won the first of three Triple Crowns, his first Cy Young Award and first World Series MVP award. Arthritis in his throwing arm forced his early retirement from the sport after the 1966 season.
9. Which one of these martial arts involves the use of bamboo swords?

Answer: Kendo

Kendo is a Japanese martial art whose name translates as "way of the sword". The weapons used are called shinai. World championships in the sport have been organised since 1970 and take place every three years.
10. Which Soviet gymnast won three gold medals at the 1972 Olympics?

Answer: Olga Korbut

Korbut was born in what is now Belarus in 1955. At the 1972 Munich Olympics, she won gold in the balance beam, floor and team events, as well as silver in the uneven bars. At Montreal, in 1976, she would add gold in the team event and silver in the balance beam to her medal tally.
