Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which city played host to the 1920 Summer Olympics?

Answer: Antwerp

The first Olympics to take place after World War One, the 1920 games were awarded to Antwerp, in Belgium. Budapest was the originally designated host city, but the Austro-Hungarian Empire was banned from entering a team, so a new venue was needed. Amsterdam hosted the games in 1928, Atlanta in 1996, and Athens in both 1896 and 2004.
2. What is the nickname of sports teams from San Diego State University?

Answer: Aztecs

Sports teams from SDSU have been known as Aztecs since 1925. The school is a member of the Mountain West Conference, and during the 20th century won national championships in men's volleyball and rugby.
3. Which golfer won his only major of the 20th century at the 1993 US PGA Championship?

Answer: Paul Azinger

Azinger turned professional in 1981, and, after a near-miss at the British Open in 1987, broke his majors duck in 1993. At the Inverness Club in Toledo, he defeated Greg Norman in a sudden-death play-off to lift the US PGA title.
4. What is the nickname of the Canadian Football League team in Montreal?

Answer: Alouettes

The Alouettes were originally founded in 1946, and won four Grey Cups between 1949 and 1977. A change of nickname to Concordes in 1982 proved unsuccessful, and they briefly relocated to Baltimore, where they won the 1995 Grey Cup under the moniker Stallions. That game proved to be the franchise's last under that name, as they moved back to Montreal for the 1996 season, with the Alouettes nickname being reborn.

In the first decade of the 21st century, they won two further Grey Cups, in 2002 and 2009.
5. Which British soccer team defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in the 1983 European Cup Winners Cup final?

Answer: Aberdeen

Under the management of Alex Ferguson, Aberdeen shocked the Spanish giants in the rain in Gothenburg. Eric Black gave them an early lead, before a Juanito penalty levelled matters. In extra time, John Hewitt headed in the winner.
6. Which tennis player, both of whose initials begin with A, shocked Jimmy Connors in the 1975 Wimbledon final?

Answer: Ashe

Ashe had won the 1968 US Open and 1970 Australian Open, but was given little chance of beating defending-champion Connors at Wimbledon '75. Connors hadn't dropped a single set on his way to the final, whilst Ashe, seeded sixth, had survived a number of long matches, including a five-set epic with Tony Roche in the semis.

In the final, however, Ashe won the first two sets 6-1 6-1, and although Connors won the third 7-5, Ashe closed out the match 6-4 in the fourth. His victory made him the first African-American to win the men's singles title at Wimbledon.
7. Which baseball legend is nicknamed Hammerin' Hank?

Answer: Henry Aaron

Henry "Hank" Aaron hit 755 home runs in a professional career which stretched from 1954 to 1976. He began with the Milwaukee Braves, and remained with that franchise when they moved to Atlanta in 1966. In 1975, he moved back to Milwaukee to see out his career with the Brewers.

He overtook Babe Ruth's all-time home run record on April 8th, 1974, in a game vs the Dodgers, and would hold the record until it was overtaken by Barry Bonds in 2007.
8. A number of sports leagues have been known by the abbreviation AFL over the years. Which one of these is not the name of a real league that was called the AFL in the 20th century?

Answer: Austrian Football League

The Arena Football League (gridiron) was an indoor version of the game founded in 1987. The Australian Football League (Australian Rules Football) was founded as the Victorian Football League in 1987, adopting the "Australian" name in 1990.
