Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1995, which cyclist became the first rider to win the Tour de France in five consecutive years?

Answer: Miguel Indurain

Indurain, from Spain, won the Tour de France each year from 1991-95 as part of Team Banesto. He also won the Giro d'Italia twice, but, and somewhat ironically, he never won his native Vuelta a Espana. He retired from road racing in 1996.
2. Bob Knight coached which college to NCAA national basketball titles in 1976, 1981, and 1987?

Answer: Indiana

Knight was appointed head coach of Indiana's basketball program in 1971. He led them to 11 Big Ten regular season titles, and to the final four of the NCAA championships on five occasions. He was fired in controversial circumstances in 2000. He took over as head coach of Texas Tech in 2001.
3. In 1990, who became the oldest man to win golf's US Open title?

Answer: Hale Irwin

Irwin, from Missouri, had already won two US Open crowns in 1974 and 1979. In 1990 aged 45, he defeated Mike Donald in a playoff at Medinah. He joined the Champions Tour in 1995.
4. Which club managed by Bobby Robson won soccer's UEFA Cup in 1981?

Answer: Ipswich Town

Robson joined Ipswich as manager in 1969, leading them to the English FA Cup in 1978. In 1981, they defeated Dutch club AZ '67 Alkmaar over two legs in the UEFA Cup Final. Robson succeeded Ron Greenwood as manager of the England national squad in 1982.
5. Which one of these baseball stars was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973 by the Negro League Committee?

Answer: Monte Irvin

Irvin was a Negro league star with the Newark Eagles before signing with the New York Giants in 1949. An outfielder, he was a member of the Giants team which defeated the Cleveland Indians in the 1954 World Series.
6. Which NFL wide receiver was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007 after a career which saw him winning three Super Bowl rings in the 1990s?

Answer: Michael Irvin

Irvin was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys out of the University of Miami in 1988. He had career statistics of 65 touchdowns and nearly 12,000 receiving yards. He was forced to retire from the game in 1999 after a spinal injury suffered in a game in Philadelphia.
7. Which one of these NBA stars was the overall number one pick in the 1996 draft?

Answer: Allen Iverson

Iverson played collegiate basketball at Georgetown before being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers. He was voted NBA Rookie of the Year for the 1996-97 season. He was traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2006, then, after brief spells with Detroit and Memphis, returned to the 76ers in 2009.
8. Which one of these US colleges has sports teams nicknamed Sycamores?

Answer: Indiana State

The Indiana State Sycamores are based in Terre Haute. A member of the Missouri Valley Conference, their greatest achievements of the 20th Century were provided by the school's basketball team, which was runner-up in the NCAA Tournament in both 1968 and 1979. Star of the 1979 team was Larry Bird, who would go on to have a Hall of Fame career with the NBAs Boston Celtics.
9. Which tennis player became the first wild card entrant to win Wimbledon, when they triumphed in the singles final in 2001?

Answer: Goran Ivanisevic

Ivanisevic, a Croation, had finished runner-up at Wimbledon on three occasions prior to his 2001 triumph. A shoulder injury had seen his world ranking plummet between 1999-2001, but his previous record at Wimbledon led to organisers giving him a wild card to the 2001 event.

He succeeded all expectations, defeating Andy Roddick, Marat Safin and Tim Henman on his way to the final. The final itself, against Pat Rafter, was a five-set thriller, with Ivanisevic winning 9-7 in the final set.
10. Which country withdrew from soccer's World Cup finals in 1950, because organisers refused to allow them to play bare-footed?

Answer: India

India qualified automatically after the other three teams in their qualifying group. Burma, Indonesia, and Philippines, all withdrew. They were drawn in a group with Italy, Paraguay, and Sweden for the finals in Brazil, but refused to take part after FIFA introduced a rule banning bare-footed play.
